I have no faith in the game, but regardless I am soooooooooooo looking forward to it for the all new Yamaoka soundtrack

But who knows, even with their flaws I've enjoyed every SH game to date, so maybe I'll find this to be a good experience as well.

I'm going to get the soundtrack, not the game however.

I still have to start SH3, so I should do that first.

I'm looking forward to this, just because it's a new Silent Hill, but I don't think Homecoming will be all that good. Hopefully, I will be surprised.

Day 1, and good job on the thread (last half is better than the first amirite?)

Seriously, it's bizarre how I went from despising the notion of this title, to having it on the absolute top of my must-have list for this month. I think a lot of it just has to do with how well the guys at Double Helix have done in dealing with the fans, some of the hate, and giving us enough media to see that this game really is following in the footsteps of some of the better SH games. Will it be the best of them all? I highly doubt it. It's been so long since I played 1-3, and the image of those games have been burnt into my mind to a point where it may well be impossible, mentally, to consider Homecoming - a game with a lot of controversy surrounding it thanks to the SH hardcore - trumping them.

But I've gotten over it, really. I'm ready to see what Double Helix has done here, and the latest stuff I've seen indicates to me that this isn't just some outsourced hack-job to a loved property; they're trying to do right by this series, and I applaud them for having the guts to try. Knowing that SH is now out of the hands of Team Silent (god rest their tormented souls), I think we need to hope for the best here and be optimistic. If it comes out, and it has problems, realize that many - perhaps all - of the original games had their fair share, and give constructive feedback to the team, in the form of e-mails or what-have-you. They probably deserve that much.

Again, day 1. I'm excited to see how it all turns out -- especially that last half!!

Scarlet looks absolutely fucked up. Don't know why some peeps are down on the design; probably one of the best I've seen from the game thus far, in terms of new enemies.

Even if this does review well, I won't be able to buy it. I can't afford it at this time of year. A shame really, I feel there will be more people like me who just won't give it the time of day because of its release date. They should have left it until next year.

Despite some of the negativity directed at SH5 and its development team, I'm actually more excited about SH5 than Dead Space. I'm crossing my fingers that they've come up with a engaging story.

I remember reading somewhere that the PC version will also be available on 9/30 but only via Steam.

I had a dream last night about this game. I dreamed the game had beautiful art, a great story and a very elaborate atmosphere. I'm hoping it will become true and the entire game will surprise me.

As a SH fan, I just have to get this. But I'm still waiting for the reviews to surface. I might also avoid watching the Gametrailers review, due to them often revealing spoilers in their videos.

I´m very interested in this title, but...

1. I´ve never played an SH game before, so don´t really know what to expect.
2. Got badly burned by Alone in the Dark.

So GAF convince me - why should I buy this? And will there be a demo?

Alone in the Dark is a very, very horrible game. In the last few years of buying games it is the first I've regretted adding to my library. And I'm a horror game fanboy (I liked Jericho).

Silent Hill games aren't known for their gameplay. But as far as story, atmosphere, art and music, they are second to none. The only question here is that SH5 isn't being made by the original developers. But I still have faith.

I say you should go out of your way to play the first games first.

The reasons why is that:
a) They're timeless classics (especially 1&2, I would also say 3).
b) It's better not to get used to a HD version before you play the old ones.

If the OXM review of slightly clunky controls, hard enemy damage, and slow-burn plot that reveals itself into chaos is any indication, I'll love this game. Hell, there hasn't been a "perfect" SH game yet, so I'm FOR. Edit: Though SH2 is a personal 10 in my book

And for all the people that loathe it based on Team Silent's dissolution, they wanted to stop making Silent Hills. You must admit that atleast we're getting a new game.

Hell yes. Screw the haters, this looks great.

This will be the first SH game I play without totally spoiling myself before I start it, so I'm really looking forward to the experience.

I'm worried that we haven't heard anything at all about the PC version--no specs, controller support, even screenshots. Just that it's Steam only, but it's not even on Steam's Coming Soon page.

the SH series has always kind of floated around the 7 to 8.5 mark in review scores... i'm not really expecting this one to be that different in that regard. either reviewers don't value scares and atmosphere as highly as me or they don't get it.

i didn't get into the series until a couple of years ago, so when 0rigins came out and got 8/10s i was pretty upset that it was getting lowballed, and then i realised that the series has always been lowballed.

reviews aren't going to cut it for this game or this series i don't think. people definately feel a lot stronger about them than the reviews would seem to justify.

it's going to be interesting watching what people say in the reviews here, and contrasting that with what people on gaf think of it. i'm going to be there day one all the same. i can't wait to play this pretty much unspoiled about it as i am right now.

and that, combined with the quality (or lack thereof) of previous SH ports to PC is why i'm skipping the PC version.

my PC in theory should smoke my consoles, but i just don't trust konami enough with PC ports, espescially one they aren't putting in stores, to go through with it. i went with the 360 version cause that seems to be the one Konami are showing the most.

This also, really, begs the question why anyone who's followed the SH series to this point is ready to let reviews make the call on this. Don't get me wrong, I'm pro-reviews/cautious buying, etc, but SH has never excelled critically. Ironically, critics tend to reference the series as the absolute zenith of survival horror games, but such claims were rarely reflected when a magnifying glass is placed over their reviews (not to mention the numbers at the bottom!)

So, yeah, anyone who's sitting around waiting for a 9/10 review; it's probably not going to happen here. But I remember seeing numbers as low as 6 and 7 back when SH2 was released, and I don't think I need to go beyond suggesting that some people just didn't 'get it' back then -- and some won't 'get it' even now.

So, if you're going to rely on anything with a SH game...the safer bet is word of mouth, here on GAF, or your gut. If we all let the scores surrounding some of the older SH games dictate our purchases, we'd really have missed out on some of the best games of all time (imo).

Well it's a matter of prespective really. Any 6+ game is a potential purchase in my book, as long as it's features sound original/interesting.

As a diehard Silent HIll fan I'm dissapointed in myself for not following this more closely. Last I heard it was a crap game with crap graphics. I see they somewhat fixed the graphics issue, though it looks like instead of adding a grain filter to the whole screen they added it to eqach texture seperately

Still plan on buying it, the awesome OP has helped sway my opinion

Even though I'm a big SH fan, I still haven't made up my mind on whether I should buy Homecoming or not. It looks pretty mediocre from what I've seen so far. To make matters worse, this fall is already packed with far more interesting game titles.

Either way, I'm looking forward to the reviews.

I'm sure you could enjoy this without playing the other games, but you're missing out on a great series by skipping them. The visuals still look great even today.

I didn't know the PSX was available in 1988, though.

SH1 came out in 1998.

Btw. I played the shit out of SH1, scarriest game ever. I started to have regular nightmares about year after playing.

Never played other sh game apart of sh4 demo.

The game just scarred me to the point I didn't want even to get close to the series.

Now I'm ready.

If you guys are waiting for positive enough reviews to buy this game, forget it. I can already assure each and every one of you that it won't get great, or even very good scores. Maybe the occasional 8, or the extremely rare 9 in some cases-- but I doubt it. I expect the majority to be in the 5-7 range.

Whatever the case, I will say that this will be a game that you'll need to try out on your own.

Silent Hill games have been reviewed positively in the past, so why are you gearing up for negative reviews now? Just because Gamespot has given low scores doesn't mean that every reviewer did.

If the game gets mostly 5-7s it's probably because the game isn't good, not because reviewers don't know how to review Silent Hill games.
