The only good thing about Transformers was the 1% of the film in the desert at the beginning.
The rest was a CGI wankfest with no direction or anything, characters you couldn't give a toss about (quite important for an action film) and a terrible ending. Horrible film, and in no way 'good' overall. |

Emmerich is worse, even though he made the only film out of both filmographies i kinda like (Stargate - then again, i haven't seen that for years). They are both TERRIBLE though.
Bay has made by far the worst film of either of them. Pearl Harbor is one of the most insulting pieces of shit i have ever seen. |

Michael Bay:
Transformers 9/10 Best thing Bay has directed and the best summer blockbuster of 2007. Found the balance of catering to the fans and still being easy to follow for newbies. Has a really great ending. The Island 6/10 The first part of the movie is ripped straight from THX 1138. The second part is more of a typical Bay film. Bad Boys II 8/10 The most epic action movie ever. I just don't understand, how anyone could hate this film. Pearl Harbor 4/10 Ok, this really bad. Actually the movie would have been decent, if they would have cut the last 30 minutes. I guess they couldn't end the movie with the americans losing. Armageddon 5/10 The main premise is extremely silly but all in all the film isn't that bad. At least it has an amazing cast. The Rock 9/10 Quintessential action film of the 90's. Connery's last good film. Bad Boys 6/10 An okay start, but nothing more. Roland Emmerich 10,000 BC Haven't seen and really don't want to see. The premise is even more stupid than in Armageddon. The Day After Tomorrow 3/10 I really like the idea of making a catastrophe movie about climate change, but not when it has absolutely nothing to do with reality. The Patriot 4/10 Emmerich's most serious film. Really bad, but what can you expect with a movie titled The Patriot directed by a german and starring mostly australians and brits. Godzilla (1998) 4/10 What have they done to Godzilla? I'm so glad the american godzilla (or Zilla) got his ass kicked in Final Wars. Independence Day 7/10 The effects were mindblowing back in the day. The plot is just as stupid as in The Day After Tomorrow, but somehow it doesn't bother me nearly as much. Stargate (1994) 7/10 This movie has Kurt Russell so it automatically is at least average. Universal Soldier 6/10 I haven't seen this in long while. I haven't seen any of Emmerich's german films. => Bay wins! |

In terms of commercial success, I'd have to say Emmerich has the nod here (for worst).
Bay delivers action porn ensuring that the story doesn't matter. SFX and other assorted eye candy notwithstanding, turning your brain off during his films crunches a lot of popcorn, but you can easily tell when he tries to reach beyond what he does best. Case in point: Pearl Harbor. Good googely moogely that was awful. The only impressive part was the actual attack (which you still have to take with a huge grain of salt) and the Doolittle raid (which should have been broken off into its own film, see: Raid Over Tokyo), but most everything else was embarrassing when it came to actually trying to sell Titanic in WW2 (I love you, no wait, I love you...oh shit, you're alive? I love you again! WHA-?!). In addition to "Tora Tora Tora", the film could also have benefited from a little "From Here to Eternity". Emmerich has felt a lot more miss than hit, and after watching 10,000 BC, I'd be surprised if anyone decided to give him another big budget to work with on another film. I did enjoy "The Day After Tomorrow" as it delivered incredible disaster scenes on a global level for that reason alone, though. You can't quite turn your brain off with his films since he seems to make more an effort in trying to tell a coherent narrative with fun twists (Stargate), but it doesn't quite mesh with everything else. At least he hasn't gone down as hard as Verhoeven has, filmwise. Personally, I think that Bay's only solid attempt at telling a good story coupled with his action direction was "The Rock". |

Bay at least make entertaining movies, his worst movies. And how can you hate on Bad Boys? Really. Sure the second one was kinda crappy but it still delivered the funnay.

Bay has these awful slow motion hero shots in all of his movies. It's almost like Uwe Boll with his Matrix-esque spinning shots. Bay also made Bad Boys 2, possibly the worst action movie ever. It felt like it was four and a half hours long.
Emmerich made The Patriot which is a surprisingly good movie. Moon 44 and Stargate are sci-fi classics in my opinion. He raped my childhood icon though so he can go and rot in hell for all I care. |

I have managed to miss most of these moveis, thank god.
Indepence Day was terrible. Overrrated garbage that revived one of the worst genres in cinema history, the disaster movie. Stargate is great. The Rock is better. I haven't seen anything by either for ages, except the fisrt half of Transformers, which was terrible. It's a tie. |

The Patriot sucks ass. It's weird how those foreign directors show much more cardboard patriotism than american ones
that said, i think Emmerich is better, but not by far. His movies suck just like Bay's, but at least he knows that frenzied editing is not a good thing |

I don't understand how you can hate on Bad Boys 2. Awesome gun action, awesome chase sequences, hot babes, funny parts.
I love it. |

However, if we're going to go with worst overall (but still successful) director, my vote goes to Ratner. |
