Apparently, nine days from today. Yes I'm thick and somehow missed that when it was announced.

If those cam-pics weren't shopped then I don't see what the complaining's about, unless you were looking for a new camera to take real photos with.

I think the built-in storage and SD slot have huge potential, I'm hopping Nintendo taps it with downloadable VC games (or at least, DSi-exclusive GB/GBC games).

Who wouldn't? They are the best of the series.

Someone said something interesting in an old DSi thread, that Nintendo's going to launch the DSi in America around the same time as it releases Platinum- a one-two punch like the original NSMB+DS Lite combo. That'd be neat.

Yeah, seeing the latest Famitsu numbers I finally realized why Nintendo brought this out. The camera probably appeals to the Japanese a lot.

One of the hinges on my DS has cracked and the other one has come off completely. Despite the price of the DSi it's looking really appealing at this point.

Did you watch the vid? Although, I dunno if increasing the screen size but keeping the same resolution will have any hazardous effects... hopefully not.

Apparently you can see the scanlines on the new PSPs. The screenshots I've seen look pretty distracting.

Yeah, I'm sure a double 0.3MP camera with Game Boy Camera functionalities is meant to compete with a regular whatever-numberMP camera.

I'm having a friend there pick one up for me~ Can't wait to read impressions from J-GAFers, too.

The only problem I have with the DSi is the battery life. It's still not bad at all, but 1 hour less than the DSLite

Yeah, just like the huge DS price cuts, the many high-profile distant future game announcements, and the massive DS advertising push that all happened when PSP 2000 was doing so well this year.

Oh, wait. :)

Stranger things have happened. I'm willing to bet good money that importing a DSi is cheaper than buying another 360.

Maybe you can somehow combine both camera's for 0.9MP pictures! (0.3ē)

Really? That's still like a bajillion though. :P

Seriously I left my DS Lite on for almost 36 hours in standby once because I didn't want to "save" in Dementium. It probably could've stayed in standby for another 10 or so hours if I had left it alone before turning red.

The bigger screens on the DSi probably have something to do with it. Also, I don't know if the DSi is brighter (impossible?) than the Lite but that could also do it.

They're insane putting it out in such disgusting condition. They want to rival the DSi then make an announcement for a new version and fix it up later. The fact that there is new hardware is more important than the actual release date.

The only real difference it would seem, is the mic. No games are ever going to require it, outside of Skype it's useless.

The DSi is confirmed to have another brightness setting.

I'm importing the UK version of Dementium: the Ward. They fixed the save-system finally!

Remember when we first got the DS Lite, and how it made the old games fresh and new again? Well, i imagine DSi doing the same thing.

For example, I haven't touched Trauma Center in ages, but having a little extra screen space to perform should add something~

Wow, another brightness setting. o_o I already use my Lite as a flashlight sometimes as it is.

Yeah, the Lite made me replay some games. I actually bought NSMB but didn't want to play it until I got my Lite.

YTD the PSP is the that has sold more consoles, I believe the PSP slowed down when the 3000 was announced a while ago, since then they were always next to each other, or the PSP first.

Nintendo had to do something to keep the DS up and kicking longer, because when you see those 25M users you have to wonder who else is going to buy your console.

But with the DSi coming just after the 3000, it will set them on first place over the PSP on a weekly basis until the end of the year, but who knows if it will be enough to get them surpass PSP's YTD.

I'm mostly waiting for impressions on the larger screens, would be pretty much the only reason I'd buy one.

That and the fact that the touchscreen of my DSL is slowly losing responsiveness.

Yeah, I have, and it's true that you nowadays see many more people playing PSP on trains and around town in Japan than DS.

And yet it doesn't seem to have bothered Nintendo at all. At their financial meeting they discussed openly the situation. They don't knee-jerk, they just get on with what they want to do. DSi is clearly a part of 'what they want to do' and they must have plans for the SD usage, download store, and permanently installed apps.

Sure, the timing is close to PSP-3000... but isn't that more to do with them both wanting to hit in the run up to the holidays?

Well I do think the decline on sales is mostly to the huge amount of DS already out in the market, so a cap would be reached sooner or later anyway.

But even if Nintendo doesn't say so, it is obvious that they don't want to give out their position as the number one, best selling portable console there.

If Sony ends up first YTD-wise, next year they can use that as a PR-line, and I'm sure Nintendo would be annoyed for it

The DSi is just to keep momentum until the next-gen portable is released in 2+ years

It's ridiculous that we have to wait so long for it, but then again they're probably gonna struggle enough just trying to supply enough to Japan.

Depends how bright each setting is, brightness level 2 on a DSi is not necessarily the same brightness as level 2 on a DS Lite.

meh.

I can see how this would be definitely something to hold out for, if you don't own a ds or a psp, or just want a handy little mini computer thing to play with your friends, but otherwise, I'm not entirely sold on it. Maybe when they start making games that really take advantage of the system.

I am wondering about this myself. Was planning on just hitting the Yamada Denki near me, but I'm going to be in Tokyo that week instead of the much-easier-to-get-new-hardware-inaka where I live, and I don't know if I want to bother camping.

Is the demand for the DSi going to be as insane as the DS Lite was, I wonder?

I don't agree at all. The development of a DS download service suggests Nintendo has been planning this for a long time, perhaps since the beginning. The first two DS models may even have been precursors and this could be the "real" DS.

I think many people still underestimate just how ambitious Nintendo is. I don't imagine them moving on from the DS until a (new) competitor enters or until everyone has a DS.

I wouldn't be so fast importing the DSi if the downloadable software is region-locked as they said.

There's a Japanese-language Iwata Asks on the touch-ds site, if anyone wants to translate: http://touch-ds.jp/dsi/interview/1_1.html

Just looking at Google Translate, it seems they talk about the camera, why they picked an "obsolete" resolution, the decision to drop the GBA slot, the changing from glossy surface to matte, and some other stuff. Like how now you can remove and insert a DS cartridge without switching off the power, and it'll just show the game on the menu like the Wii channels.

Saw the interview, the resolution is good for viewing on the DSi but I still think the camera is too low-res. They integrated SD card into the DSi so as to able to view those photos in the Wii photo channel, but at 640 X480, I doubt its gonna be any good:(

@tenbatsu: VGA is enough for displaying on Wii and DS. Sure it is not enough to use as real photos. I think snapshots is the better word here. ;)

The reason that the camera is low res is because its easier to use in applications. The point of the camera isn't to be a photographer, but to use and have fun with.
