I wouldn't say Forza 2 had the worst graphics. Very underwelming compared to both how high up it's predecessor was and how good PGR3 looked, but not really bad.

Nethack.

I thought that screenshot earlier was Nethack, but it turns out it was Rogue...since I've seen the Rogue level of Nethack and it looks the same.

I played it recently, so that's why. It's a great game, but it hasn't aged well. I guess you could say I haven't played many games that would be considered "fucking ugly".

I guess, but I don't think that works in context with the thread. If we were to say that you could go ahead and list just about any game from past generations.

Mercs 2 is a great game. I played it on PC, maybe it is different on console.

Take mercs 2 gameplay and variety and give it Far Cry 2 graphics and it probably would be my game of the year for 2008.

Mars Matrix.
Yeah even for a 2D shooter it looked like ass(Dreamcast version? Good night. Damn thing looks like goatse on a gd-rom). Godawful pre-rendered bits of garbage all over the place; amazing game though.

Shinobido looks and runs like a PSX game but it's a better stealth-ninja game than I dunno whatever.

EDF2 cause it rules even though the framerate is ass.

I remember hearing about this game back in the day and being very intrigued. Never had the money to bite though, sadly. Are there any other games with similar gameplay ideas to this one?

I prefer how FFVII looks to both VIII and IX (which is a hard thing for me to say, as IX's my favorite game ever <3). No joke. The gorgeous backgrounds are incredible, and I love the blocky characters as they still retain an identity, but one I still have to necessarily imbue them with. If a remake were to look like Advent Children, I have no problem saying I think it'd be a downgrade.

Of course, Tactics blows it out of the fucking park.

Super Smash Bros (N64)

Whilst the Gamecube and Wii titles in the series are still amongst the prettiest games on each machine, the original Super Smash Bros was butt fugly - especially considering the game was released when we'd already seen the beauty of games like Ocarina of Time and Banjo-Kazooie. The game featured horrendously low poly character models (even for the time. I swear the Mario model was actually worse than that used in Super Mario 64).

Frankly, it didn't look good when it came out compared to what we were getting used to on N64. Still, it's all about the Gameplay, right? Oh, and having said that, I *loved* the cute 2D art on the box and in the manual. That stuff was great.

Hearts of Iron 2 is one of my favourite games of all-time, but there isn't much beauty there.

My absolute favourite game of all-time, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, but even when it came out back in 1999, it was heavily criticized for it's poor graphics.

I dunno I still think Alpha Centauri looks fantastic.
I guess that's more due to the swell UI and fantastic presentation.

I dunno, I thought the game looked pretty good because the characters animated very, very well for the time.

Well they presentation outside of the map graphics is brilliant, but I don't think one can deny the map graphics being pretty bad.

I don't know the terminology all that well, but the dithering (I think) and other graphical flaws are in full force in Forza 2.

Some of these pics are just games that look bad NOW. Just because the graphics are dated doesn't mean they're bad. They looked nice at one point.

However, Nippon Ichi's SRPGs on the PS2 had a fantastic art style, but the graphics were looked like they were from the PS1 era. The sprites were blurry and washed out, and the areas looked like they were from the alpha build of other RPGs.

*click on pics for full sized images. (last pic is rather large, btw)

everything in the game is either randomly generated or user created, even the last pic.

edit: ugh...TinyPic shrinks large images? Anyway...here is the full sized last screen

No More Heroes - some awesome character models (typical of Suda) but the game was really jagged and the overworld was a mess of jaggies and horrendous slow down.

What a fucking brilliant game to play however.
