Oh well, I'm not starting over again.
That's cause he's in 1-2, trapped in a tunnel. Right after warping to Phalanx go to the next hall with all the slimes, hook a left and go down to a big gate, you'll see him on the other side. To rescue him go to the first tower, down stairs and go left, kill all the archers.

Holy hell. I'm 7 hours in, and I just finished 1-2.

Nevertheless, it's been awhile since I've been so satisfied accomplishing something in a video game like that. Felt like I'd just finish the last boss of a game.

All right, I haven't been to 1-2 very much yet... I'll go look for him. He better be alive.

2-2 sucks. Lost my souls. Went to retrieve them. Now I'm lost. Been running around like an idiot completely confused as to how the hell I get out. If anyone can help me I'm around that guy Patches who tries to get you to go after that treasure. That big worm thing is just above on another walkway. Also just ran in to two red guys. Scary stuff but I kicked some ass.

There are two paths in the beginning of 2-2.

The left one is long and confusing but has some nice treasures and a vendor.
The right one is short but tricky because you need to jump down on the right platforms. It is less tricky if you place messages so you know where to jump down next time. Also, adjust the brightness.

You will probably walk the right path a few times because the boss ... well he's gonna tear you a second asshole. And then a third.

I'm having fun in 4-1. I literally just spent the past hour learning how to fight the skeletons, to the point where I can kill them without taking many hits now. But how do I kill Vanguard?? :(

I have a bow but arrows don't do much damage. And I have no magic.

Ok, here's a cheap method of killing Vanguard;

Instead of going straight through the main gate to attack Vanguard head on, turn left just inside the gate tower and follow the tunnel around until you get to a blocked up door that's shimmering - swipe at it and the illusion will fade and you can progress onwards through the tunnel (watch out for the two skeletons who suprise attack you at the t-junction). Keep following the path through until you come back out into the open - now you should be behind Vanguard and from this vantage point you can swipe at his ankles before retreating back into the tunnels.

I can't believe how awesome this game is... it's like, where did this amazing masterpiece come from, under the radar and everything??? It's like no other game experience known to man!

Where else do you find yourself standing before a demon like Vanguard, thinking, "Do I take my 6k souls back to the Nexus and level up, or do I try to run past him and grab the uchigatana, and risk dying and having to fight my way all the way back here..."

I ran for it, dove past him, nearly got killed by the flying things, grabbed the uchigatana, ran back past Vanguard and headed back to the Nexus to spend my souls... I'll get Vanguard's soul another day.

He can probably kill you in two swipes.
He telegraphs his attacks very clearly though so you can easily avoid his jump attacks.
If you are a magic user with light armor the fight should be significantly easier.

If you have access to the flame spells they usually go down very quickly. Otherwise turpentine and fire bombs will help you out a bit.

You should fear his leap attack.
You can bypass him if you lure him in the hall.

Btw. this thread has gotten me back into Demon's Souls again.
I already beat the game and started a NG+ but yesterday I decided to make a new character (female knight) and I quickly rolled through most of 1-1. I was almost downstairs to get to Phalanx only to fall down a couple flights of stairs and die.
I guess I will continue again today.

I'm going to try and focus my character build on strength and endurance (heavy armor and weapons). It willprobably to turn the game in even more of a bitch considering magic is damn useful in this game.

Roll to dodge from his leaping attack, proceed to stab him in the back. Keep hitting from behind. Then either continue to use this attack or keep turning around him in circles evading his attacks.

Alternate strategy is to have a lot of endurance and a large shield, block his attacks and retaliate when he recoils from his blocked attack.

Also, does Atlus have any plans on selling the strategy guide on its own?

protip: the skeleton's weakness is fire, bout 3-4 fire blasts should kill one, even the black ones. You might wanna to spend some points on mp though

same thing works for vanguard, make sure to bring some spices, just shoot at him, he's stupid

You don't most of the time lol. When you die enemies respawn but he still patrols I think, so you need to rush to him quickly. Either way he has only one significant thing: Mausoleum Key, so you can kill him in 1-1 and take the key. The items from 1-2 and 1-3 (Pure Cloudstone and Rage of God) can be obtained by other means.

That's dangerous, even with high endurance, he will eat most of your stamina.

He was ridiculously easy with a spear. Just stay at a distance so that he does his leap attack at you, where he swipes with both swords. He's in like a 3-4 second recovery there, so the spear's strong attack gets you a strong hit in quickly. Rinse and repeat.

Noob report, I got a couple more questions. What do the unknown hero souls do? Can you use them?
I also finally beat 1-1. I didn't have any firebombs but turpetine saved my ass. Which reminds me...
I killed red eyes by making him fall into the hole near the beginning but didn't get to loot his body, the fuck?
Also, I rescued Ostrava but I couldn't find the thief ring. Where is it?
Also, I beat 1-1...should I farm the level before proceeding to 1-2? I already spent 5000 souls on upgrading my stats...

1)Yes,unknown hero souls just give you more souls. But just don't use boss souls.
2)Not all the time enemies will drop loot.
3)Thief ring is on the platform where you first rescue him.
4)Go ahead dude, but 4-2/4-3 is the best place to farm...provided you can reach that far...

1. Yes. Don't use the Demon Souls but all the unknown can be used in the Nexus when you need them.
2. Do it again and loot his body.
3. Totally up to you. If anything, it will help you with combat training. And the ring will help you kill red eyes if you use projectiles... ;)

Use the unknown hero/soldier souls from your inventory to gain extra souls. The thief ring can be found in 1-1 in the second section where ostrava first appears when you jump down.

Got some co-op going with my friend on 3-1, and while he already made some progress, I didn't realize the EVIL ENEMY OF BEAMZ would kill me so fast. I'm pretty much right before the boss of 3-1, so I hope to tackle that after I get a chance to play it again.

There is no need to grind in this game. Try 1-2 or one of the other worlds. If it's to difficult, go back and try something else instead.

I hope Atlus and From Software send out more copies of this game because I already have friends looking to buy or rent it. TO me, DS is one of those games you buy every generation simply because it is going to go down as one of the best games of this generation easily.

I'm pretty sure if you make him fall down that hole, you can't loot his body. At least that's what I remember the guide mentioning :x

EDIT: There will be no demo, Aram Jabarri mentioned it in a comment on the PS Blog about the game's release.

I just don't wanna go into 1-2 and get hit once and lose half my hp. I think I did something wrong with Ostrava. You guys said it's on the platform....I went to the bottom route, killed all the dudes then he jumped down...I was wondering too how to get up there.

After the first blue eyes knight, there's something that looks like a blue portal. If you pass through, you will be able to jump down on your right side.

Someone should mark the place with a message.
