Makes sense to have the thread. Hell we have a Jimmy Fallon thread and that shit is awful. Although you probably should have made it a combo Daily Show/Colbert Report thread since a lot of people watch both.

I expected Jon Stewart to be with this thread.

His interview on Bill Moyers' show was probably a shining moment.

On Crossfire he was still doing jokes while taking them down. With Cramer he just went balls out political debate and threw his funny out the window. It was a little frightening.

I'm in Europe and I see the show online (and Colbert) everyday there's a new episode (the next day to you guys). Because of these shows I'm afraid I'm more up-to-date with American current events than my own country's.

His overuse of the word Literally makes him look stupid and it's hard for me to take him seriously because of this.

Can this be like a Daily Show/Colbert Report superthread? I always want to talk about the Colbert Report but I never really feel like it should be in the PoliGAF thread.

We probably could. The shows serve a similar purpose and the fanbase is likely the same. Not to mention they air consecutively.

Colbert's funnier, but I usually like Stewart's interviews better. He's not playing a character, so he winds up asking better questions.

not again. to this complaint, a few things:

- the daily show doesn´t claim to be objective or even-handed
- it is unabashedly liberal and consistent in its approach
- people who enjoy the show are generally liberal themselves
- people who enjoy the show generally read from a variety of news sources

what´s the problem here?

btw, to couple the daily show and fox news in terms of bias heavily demonstrates how terrible fox news is. but it shouldn´t be mistaken just how incredibly different they are as a medium or how they approach information

thank god i can watch full episodes on their websites. as far as i know, neither the daily show nor the colbert report are ever broadcast in spain. at first i went months without watching either until i got into the habit of occasionally and consecutively watching a few episodes

The easiest distinction is simply that one is a 30 minutes comedy show on the comedy central network and the other is ostensibly a 24 hour cable news channel. Which is why his lame attempt at equivalency via those who watch either only truly shows what a moron he is.

One of the best shows to ever grace television...or at least Comedy Central.

Greatly enjoyed his "reactions" to the insane Fly-Over photo-op---nailed it so very well.

Cast has been pretty strong lately, Oliver's Venn Diagram, exploring the secrets of a Socialist nation, just great stuff.

Colbert Report is great as well.

His outrage is awesome but I don't find him funny. Colbert has made me laugh more than anything else on tv.

Yet, as I understand/vaguely recall it, Kramer sang a different tune throughout the interview and then went back to business as usual, even brushing the lot of it off the very next week.

How hilarious would it be if he one day ended up following Tucker to Foxnews...as the 2 shows Stewart wiped out?

Though by all means, let's see what Kramer plans to try and do to make Stewart "answer for it."

I think Stewart is best when he points out, at length, the absurdities manifest in a great deal of popular discourse, which he generally does without respect to party lines. His take on the no-holds-barred approach to the fighting of the war on terror versus the vehement insistence that gays with valuable skills be kicked out of the military is a particularly compelling example of this.

I think Colbert is at his best when he emulates this tactic, which is why I'm inclined to think Stewart is the better of the two. I admire Colbert for his ability to play his character as well as he does, and for his balls of steel (White House Correspondents' Dinner 2006), but I think his character often gets in his way.

They're both brilliant, at any rate.

I got the impression that the Cramer interview cold have gone a number of ways, and the ugly footage was pulled out when Cramer didn't get the point. I did feel bad for him though. Not because of was clobbered, but because he did not then, nor does he appear now, to understand why he got clobber or why Stewart was hitting CNBC.

In a way, it's actually remarkable how similar the Carlson and Cramer moments are. In both cases, the guy is so shocked by the direction Stewart takes the conversation that he instrictly perpetuates the very line of behavior Stewart is criticizing, thus showing how completey and sadly hard wired it all is. Carlson responded to criticism that he perpetuated superficial understanding of issues and bad journalism by indulging in a meaningless attack/talking point pattern...by engaging Stewart in a meaningles attack / talking point pattern. Cramer responds to criticism that his network considers pumping its viewers with a steady stream of "actionable" information more important than in depth financial analysis by...talking about all the various calls he's made.

Even though it's not quite as iconic as those two interviews, the Stewart/Koppel interviews were also truly amazing stuff. Even though Koppel was caught off guard, the man is a class act and eventually they two ended up having a pretty amazing open and honest conversation. I should try to dig up the footage.

The difference was Crammer was completely unable to form a coherent sentence to defend itself. He seemed to think Jon would be nice to him simply because he is an admittedly likable guy and that simply isn't enough.

The Tucker incident was I think a situation where Tucker got Jon pissed as Tucker is want to do with his smary "I'm think I'm really clever and witty" attitude.

My current mix of magazines is The New Republic, Atlantic, and Mother Jones, and I find they compliment each other very well.

McClatchy is a good daily that has an less cozy relationship with its subject matter and more off-beat sources, and they are often way ahead of the curve, particularly for Iraq intelligence and torture issues. I don't read it enough and should probably set as my homepage.
