Modern Warfare 2 Wii? I thought not? #1

While I don't have any interest in buying it for the Wii, I know there are some people who do, and up until now I was under the impression that there was no Wii version in development. Rumoured, of course, but so far only confirmed for PC, Xbox360, and PlayStation 3.

Why then does JB HiFi now have a ton of specific Modern Warefare 2 Wii pre-order boxes up?

For those who don't know, JB HiFi is an Australian retailer of entertainment goods, and usually a great place to go for games due to good prices, always stocking pre-order bonuses / collectors editions, a great library of games that are often hard to find, and almost always up to date with the latest info on when a game will be released.

On the shelf where they reserve space for the newest, biggest games the usually reserve extra room for pre-order covers. A simple place holder cover advertising the game as available for pre-order. In terms of the Wii, I know they've done it for MadWorld, Overkill, The Conduit, Virtua Tennis 2009, Tiger Woods, and Grand Slam Tennis. It's just a way for them to advertise unreleased games to those browsing.

I was in the store only a few days ago and they had The Conduit boxes up, yet today they had Modern Warfare 2 for the Wii.

This wasn't listed as 'all platforms' or something. These were specifically made Wii Modern Warfare 2 boxes placed directly in the Wii section.

I don't see any reason at all as to why they'd put Modern Warfare 2 boxes up for the Wii unless they know its coming. I've seen MW2 pre-order boxes up for the last month or so, and they've always been kept to the Xbox360/PS3 areas, but now they're in the Wii section.

So, what's the go? Are they right or what?

I asked around about this game before.

A local retailer said:
"Well we've got tons of pre-orders to fill already so they better release it!"

We don't know why he keeps buying PAL, either.

I just double checked and my official release list actually does list Wii for Modern Warfare 2... the Aussie list that is. From Activision themselves, but no other retailers including JB have it on their site.

There were several sites like Play.com who had it in their pre-order list, but disapeared again. We also had that Spanish dude, CaVaReYoh or something who said Activision had a Wii version in the works?

I still think there will be a CoD for Wii this year, but not MW2.

They did it with another game and took it down after realizing it didn't exist before

Can't remember what though.

my guess is , Treyarch will work on the port so they need Infinity Ward to finnish and complete their maps and everything first before they show it to the public .

The quiet appearance and disappearance of MW2 listings suggests its been quietly cancelled. We haven't heard anything from Cavayero either so maybe he was just going on some old listing from Activision.

It seems to me that CoDWaW did ok on Wii, even if it didn't do as well as any other platform (well maybe it beat the DS).

Until recently, I thought it was already announced that a Wii version was coming. Anyway I'd definitely buy it. The WaW port was pretty good (especially the controls) and only lacked voice chat and a chunk of the online modes. Those could easily be added now.

Speaking of, what did they update in the multiplayer portion of the Wii version of WaW? I always heard they unlocked new modes or something but never bothered to check.

I wouldn't be surprised if Activision (probably Treyarch or Vicarious Visions) had a Wii CoD in the works for this year. Though I doubt it'll be MW2.

Had you actually read the op you'd know I had no interest in getting it for the Wii, and was just querying it's supposed cancellation in relation to a store's pre-order advertisements.

It wouldn't be worth the money to make a brand new Wii exclusive CoD, since the CoDWaW didn't sell more than a few hundred thousand copies on Wii, it would be easier and cheaper to make a port.

If WII Modern Warfare 2 is coming (and it'd be ridiculous of Activision not to with WaW's performance and their desire to make MW2 the biggest entertainment property of the year), then either

1) It's not being mentioned because it's on-rails a different type of game.
2) It's such lower quality that they don't want to show it, yet (like WII 007).
3) They figure Wii's audience doesn't need the months of hype, so they can just advertise it at launch and be good (i.e. following Nintendo's model).

I'm hoping for (3). :P

No, it wasn't an old listing. He was pretty sure, he had a very "trustworthy source" telling him MW2 is coming to Wii, but the developer wasn't specified. A lot of us were already speculating that it would be an outsourced project like the DS game.

Actually, WaW already passed the 500k mark around January this year according to NPD data. Some believe worldwide it passed the 1 million mark.

If it existed, why would we not know about it at this point? MW2 comes out in November, right? They have already started airing commercials for the game, so you would think that if there was a Wii version coming, they would have added that to the ads. There might be a CoD game coming out this year, but it won't be MW2.....although I guess MW2 isn't a CoD game...

While I'm not in the group that leans either way on whether Wii MW2 exists or not, as mentioned once you annouce the Wii version it does beg the question a little of actually showing it and if it looks like crap it takes the focus and buzz off a little bit when they are in the building buzz phase of the marketing campaign. We still know very little about Modern Warfare 2 detail wise compared to some of the other big fall titles.

Plus holding back and annoucing it later and showing it sort of serves as a free marketing megaton if they do it later and the Wii version actually does exist and it's not like the Wii version would need the hype level of the other versions to sell.

Once again I come down on neither side. I have no idea if it exists or not. Just playing devil's advocate in this situation.

Try almost 1m at this point, and thats even with the massive fuck up by activision for waiting almost 40 days to run the first commercial (they started running Wii commercials and the game sold 400k in that month alone).

Would not be the first game, the PES series is also stupidly delayed after the others.

If it gets one hopefully Activision learns to actually run Wii commercials this time, they did not and the game appeared to tank. They did and amazingly their sales increased almost 400%

Do you have any actual evidence that running Wii ads is actually what triggered the sales boost, and not just last-minute shopping in December coupled with pre-existing hype from the other versions, or some other combination of factors like sufficient stock? Or would that get in the way of your sad crusade?

Which doesn't mean a whole lot. WaW sold less on both the 360 and PS3 in december than it did in november. COD:WaW probably saw at least a 100% increase from Nov to Dec on Wii, showing a bigger Christmas bump than SMG the year before (it saw a bigger bump than Wii Fit, Mario Kart in 2008 but they were supply constrained).

That's what you got out of the commercial thing? It's quite obvious to anyone that a commercial that only lists PS3/360/PC as the platform for a game might not spur sales for the Wii as well as a commercial that lists the Wii as a platform for a game. It'd be like expecting a commercial for Sims 3 to spur people to go out and try to buy the 360 version.

If it IS being made, I'd like to know who is doing it. I'd also like to know why there hasn't been any mention of it- I mean, last year WaW was one of the only "core" games Nintendo showed at their E3 presentation. My only guess is that it must not be up to snuff yet. There isn't really a good reason to at least announce it (unless they think they might stealth-cancel it à la Brutal Legend).

I remember when CoD3 was hitting all of the consoles. For months Wii owners had to suffer through 2 shitty, tiny screens of the game. Real media of the game didn't hit until the game was practically out.

if that's the case, it's kind of a sad statement about them... i do wonder who's doing it. perhaps n-space? they're doing the DS version and they do have quite a bit of solid gamecube experience and i think would be able to build on the engine rather nicely...
