I played some fairly average usermade level on this last night. It was a bit glitchy, sure, but I think whoever made this editor deserves a fucking medal. Most fun I've had with a new Sonic since collecting the last super emerald.

Has anybody checked out the stupid Avatar creator for PlaySega? I wonder if Sega licensed any of the "costumes" in there, because there's a bunch for like... Wolverine, and Captain America, and Buzz Lightyear.

Using it, I have created something amazing

Heh, that was a bit unfair since some decent stuff is starting to come out on that thing. The problem is that Sonic's platforming in general is immensely satisfying when done right, but also notoriously easy to screw up with even the slightest change. And if it doesn't feel right, it ruins everything

This is the first time SEGA has referred to him as Dr. Robotnik in TEN FUCKING YEARS.

Praise our Sega EU overloards!

I played more user made levels today and it feels like the engine is more broken then last time, falling through floors and teleporting into walls still good fun for the most part. I just wish the sprite was a little smoother and not warping around everywhere when rolling down hills.

*edit* just noticed sonic 1 MD on playsega has all the extra japanese paralax scrolling and effects.

My thanks! The level turned out quite well for a first attempt. I think they key is to not over-complicate the design.

On his profile in the Unleashed instruction manual, it says "Doctor Eggman (AKA Doctor Robotnik)".

Nice level, btw.

So I've been addicted. This level-designer is the most fun I've had with Sonic since longer than I can recall. It has a few bugs, but through playtesting the level rigorously, you can use the impenetrable tile objects to plug any collision holes.

I've made two levels so far, both quite well recieved. I've set myself some rules:
  • NO BOTTOMLESS PITS.

  • Multiple routes, with variations on gameplay in each route.

  • No blind secrets (must be something to indicate its presence)

  • Design a platform level rather than a racing level.

  • Triple-test every momentum-jump, and plan for Sonic's landing position.

  • The only time the player will see the far-right level-border is when they hit the sign.

My latest effort, Garble Marden Act 2 (a sequel to Act 1) has turned out rather nicely. Excuse the massive PNGs, but I feel they show how powerful the engine is:

I've highlighted the three paths through the level:

RED: Difficult to find, a skilled platforming path with the most drops, badniks at inconvenient moments. Progress leads to the fastest and highest momentum-jumps, and further rewards.

YELLOW: Requires effort to find, involves running on uneven platforms across a bed of spikes, easy with few risks, most direct route to end.

GREEN: Default path, mainly underground, Sonic is given invincibility and fast-shoes and is dropped into a lair with numerous badniks. Requires semi-exploration to find exit springs, more panicky, paced and distinct than other paths. A gimmick path.

More and more, I'm convincing myself that this user-generated content approach is the future of Sonic. This engine-type, expanded, revised, multi-console-released and backed with online infrastructure, would be my Game of the Generation.

I've played through all three paths and they're all awesome. They intertwine with each other nicely, too. Well done level, Mama Robotnik!

The Buzz Bombers to the extra life at the end were awesome

I really like that you posted the entire level layout, BTW. It's fun to check out.

It says something that I've almost put down the money for a 3 month subscription just so I could create levels with the Sonic Level Creator, something that only has 1 tile set! In fact the only reason I came to my senses and stopped was because of a problem on the sites end. Sega, I know you won't do this, but you should seriously consider adding a level creator to Project Needlemoose, if it really is going to be 2D Sonic then a level editor would be fantastic.

Another effort: Garble Marden Act 3.

The engine has some interesting physics and collision recurrences, but they can be mostly managed through thorough testing and reinforcing solid walls when needed. The engine is functional, but I feel proper playtesting of your level (again and again) is best way to get a quality final product from it. That goes without saying I know, but its amazing the amount of untested crap that's appearing on there.

Maps for those interested:

Paths highlighted:

After playing with this editor for hours, I'm in full agreement. A level creator in Project Needlemouse (assuming the engine is up to scratch) could be my game of the generation. This flash editor is a great start to something that could be momumental.

Also anyone who brought a playsega vip account lately is getting 45 more days added for free to their account, if that's anything exciting for you that is. My little brother and nephew like playing sonic on their webpage which makes my account more worth while.

HAHA yes, for years long ago I was a member with them, made a few games using thegamesfactory and well, as I went to uni in 2002 I stopped because game "engines" and attitudes were all becoming too hard and shit, one reason why no one ever finishes games is because they will keep on revising an engine or give up and make a better one, starting the progress from the beginning.

But it was quite an amazing time, being a sonic fan I had my fun and learned a lot about sonic level design, physics and all that lark just from trying to make my own games.

BTW if anyone plays the sonic retro levels on playsega, those were by me :)

Aye, I just got the email!

They made a mistake, but they made up for it. Kudos SEGA!

BTW, I am STILL working on my level, I want it to be epic, though I doubt anyone could beat Mama Robotnik on here. My plan is something that appeals to both the bottomless pit speed-based gameplay fan, and the momentum-based platformer gameplay fan. This is proving to be very difficult, but I think it will be worth it.

I signed up a couple of hours ago only for the Saturn pads. I already have three, but they're the eBay kind, so soon I'll be able to add two more definitely real ones to the collection.

What the hell is wrong with me? I never even use the ones I currently have. And now I'll have to remember to cancel PlaySEGA after I get my pads or they'll charge me forever.

I think I'll go work on a Sonic level.

With the pad we have to wait and see, but seeing as I have spent days working on a single level, I say it's pretty worth it. If I had more time, I'd be doing stuff like awesome custom hacks for existing games, or building something from the ground up, but I don't. I don't have time to learn it, and I don't have time to do it. This is a nice little tool that allows you to just "go for it". If you want an easy way to share your creations, and a simple GUI interface proves useful to you, then this is not a bad choice. I'd go for it.

UPDATE

Sega has introduced a free ten-day VIP trial, which includes FREE UNRESTRICTED ACCESS to the level creator. You can save your creations, publish them, basically all of the functionality of paid access:

Click here to register for free if you are interested. (Thanks Videogamer.com)

www.playsega.com/promo

It will only last for ten days, but I'm sure in this time some GAFfers could creatre some masterpieces.

EDIT - should I create a Neogaf level-creation contest thread?

EDIT EDIT - sod it, I'm creating the contest thread.

Why won't Sega release this pad for the 360/PS3? I know the PS2 version is compatible with the PS3 but it doesn't have the home button and that is a bit annoying.

Sega is releasing a Virtual On controller for the 360 so why can't they do it with this pad. I would buy 10 fo these pads if Sega released them for the PS3 and 360. five pad for each console. make it happen please Sega.

They are one of my favorite controllers ever.

IMO Sega should officially make these pads for every console PS3, 360, Wii and PC, just add a select and a home button.

Well I got my PlaySega pad. It arrived in a box with the words "London propaganda" on it.

First initial impressions, I haven't plugged it in to try with any games yet, but

the start button is pink not blue
the plastic feels cheap, to me
the shoulders are VERY clicky
the shoulders are more recessed, and looser compared to my official Saturn pad, and my ebay USB pad
the d-pad doesn't "feel" like my official saturn d-pads

Has a model number of HL-F2412 on the back, a google search bring up this webpage http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/23...ontroller.html So Sega is using Chinese knockoffs :(

Sometime this weekend, if I can find the time, I want to try and take it apart to see if the buttons are interchangeable with the official pads. If I find the time to do that I'll post pics of the internals.

Mama Robotnik, I like your use of springs as a means to allow the player to progress, really clever! I found two things that are keeping your levels from giving me "that classic Sonic feel", namely

1. Too many badniks at once in many places
2. Too many long stretches consisting of floating platforms that make me feel like I'm in space

Other than that, they were really well done.

Well I'm not going to be doing that. I got about an hour use out of it, then it broke. My Saturn controller from the mid 90s still works so it's not like I'm rough with my controllers.

I was playing SFII with it and now my down button doesn't work anymore. Thanks alot Sega :(

Since this thread is back I will speak about the pad as I received mine last week.

It's cheap and badly made, the A and X buttons are spongy and need a stronger press then what it takes to "click" down, the dpad is ok but pressing right and up (together or separate) makes your thumb hit the pad case due to the way it raises around the right side of the dpad.

Works ok but it is no where near worth it, I feel like a sucker now for paying for that 3 month sub just to get a pad. Avoid.

*edit* didn't realise the pad was a chinese one with some blue buttons and sega slapped on the front, fuck!

Would it be possible to cannabalize a standard Sega Saturn controller and swap the casing and buttons? Or is the innner board something completely in how it's layed out?

Maybe things would improve with a button swap. Sorry to hear the build quality on the controller is not up to par.

Well I did enjoy some of those user generated Sonic courses, so I don't feel completely ripped off. Maybe not worth the $15 or $20, but they were some of the best new Sonic in years.

Those Japanese USB pads made a few years ago were quality. I just figured Sega would want to restore some sort of good will with long time Sega fans and release a quality pads again. I guess not.

Yep, it even says you can customize the color. I wonder if Sega destroyed it's old molds or something, and that's why they went with the Chinese knockoffs? I hope not.

When I feel like it i'll open it up and fiddle about with the buttons, if they actually worked without applying pressure I would find it fine to use, it's a fun novelty to use it on playsega's megadirve games at least but I won't be using it for SF4 PC.
