Physical contact with guy friends #1

I find that even though some of my friends I would consider to be really good friends of mine (guys), it can sometimes be awkward to get comfortable with making gestures of friendly physical contact with them, such as man hugs, pats on the backs, handshakes, etc. The only one that is ok alright the manly handshake. What are some ways to make physical contact between bros be more natural and less awkward?

Brave thread.

Some of my friends are very bromancy, JD/Turk style. Most aren't though. I don't see why not being like that is concerning you though. It's not as if it negates the friendship or anything.

I didn't know 90% of American men were afraid of shaking hands or patting each other on the back.

I'm American and feeling awkward to shake hands and pat other men on the back is just strange. I've never met anyone with that issue. No offense, OP.

There's nothing wrong with anything you posted. Yesterday at a party my friend pinned me up against a wall and mimicked screwing me, earlier during the night he slapped my groin too. All guy fun. Kicking it with the bro's.

One of my friends DOES take it too far, rubbing my back, side of my body and stuff while being nice over stuff I'm not even depressed about (For example, I'm detailing daddy issues, and he's rubbing me all over). Rubbing my neck, tickling the lobe of my ear. Too "sensual" for my liking.

This.

Me and my friends shake hands on the norm and give out the occasional hug if we haven't seen each other in a while.

If we haven't seen each other for over a year, we bang each other with the caboose giving the reach around.

I honestly don't think this reaction comes from homophobia or anything like it, I think it's just a heightened concern over personal space that is kind of strangely present in a lot of Americans.

If he's not experiencing the same discomfort when women do it to him, then it's not just about personal space, though.

I've noticed its less weird, well actually not at all, with friends that I've had since childhood than friends I've made in my adult life. To say, I'd never randomly hop on the back of any of the friends I have made in the past few years, but me and my good friends from gradeschool do that kind of shit all the time. Our wives/girlfriends sometimes ask if we need to get a room, haha.

I actually have a theory that these intimacy issues are a large reason why it's so hard to get something like Universal Healthcare in the US without a huge fit.

There's little to no sense of camaraderie, or shared future in this country.

Handshakes, hugging, pats, gestures of friendship are fine.

However, I find teasing like light jabs, poking armpits or any ticklish area, pretending to play boxing...these kinds of thing are immature. College environment, or with friends at a drunken ass party, sure it's tolerable. But we get these in our office and it just seems unprofessional and uncomfortable especially with co-workers I hardly know.
