Video game music "inspired"/stolen from other sources. #1

So we all know video game composers like to pay tribute to artists/bands/etc (wink wink) and the following example from Blast Corps and Front Line Assembly has been bothering me for a while

http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/song/Circuitry/2142932
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vn2QkrgT3K0

Seriously? Couldn't they have tried a little harder? What are some other obvious and not so obvious examples of video game composers being "inspired" by other songs?

I remember that when the FFVIII demo hit so many years ago, that Attack on Dollet theme was accused of being blatant thievery from the movie The Rock. IIRC, Nobuo Uematsu indicated that it was a surprising coincidence, not theft, but he pulled the track and composed the new one that eventually made it into the final game.

But I have the MP3 of it, Mr. Uematsu! I've got you pegged! (Spoiler: original song > replacement song.)

Despite nothing being proven, some of that Sonic 3 music does sound a lot like a couple of Michael Jackson tunes...

Aren't there some tracks in Earthbound that sound similar to Beatles songs? I know that they are namedropped a ton during the game, but I don't remember any music that sounds similar.

It also lifted several passages from the Maoh/Magus boss fight in Chrono Trigger:

Combat Cars from the Mega Drive (read: Genesis if you are from the U.S)

I think the game only has music they ripped from somewhere, I just don't recall the artist/name of the songs from that time all that well, so yeah, here is the one I do know!

Here Goes:

There was like a story about this a few days ago. Some Japanese composer totally stole a song from someone else. I forgot who it was though... Edit: Nevermind.

Rare seems to be a culprit. Both Banjo Kazooie and Diddy Kong Racing had examples - I can't look up youtubes, but it was very obvious.

Banjo Kazooie had some of the best, most catchy music ever though, so it's forgiveable.

A lot of MegaMan themes are based on rock music songs. I've heard REM, Metallica...hell, the bosses in MegaMan X5 were named after GnR members.

This is my personal favorite.

First listen to this song (The ever infamous rickroll)

Now listen to the song 16-bit-ified with Mario Paint

And now Listen to this

That's right, you've been getting rickrolled by Chrono Trigger for 15 years.

I posted this in the mind blowing thread, but the Shinra Theme sounds very similar to Kashmir, by Led Zeppelin.

Led Zeppelin - Kashmir
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRpJg1StvFw

FF VII - Shinra Theme
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xis9bi2OeM4

Play the song at the 7 minute mark. I wouldn't say it was stolen or anything, but it really caught me off guard one day while listening to the song.

90% of Mega Man X3's soundtrack is an affront to working human ears everywhere, but this is the most greivous offense of them all.

_There is a song in Grandia clearly based on Rose Royce's "wishing on a star" but i can't recall wich one ! Some area on the second disc i guess.

_There are pretty resemblances between some Mario and Zelda tracks and some Gershwin ones ! But that's just a feeling i have, nothing proved !

_There is ChronoRick but it's famous i guess^^

It sounds like when you have this tune in your head but have forgotten how it exactly sounds like... mostly with childhood memory music. I don't think Kojima knowingly made such a strong reference to that piece.

Now, Super Robot Taisen K...

And that MegaManX piece is also pretty awesome.

And instead we got .. whatever that one song was that almost starts to sound like the metal gear theme, and then leaves you high and dry. There were so many moments in that game where I was listening to the music thinking 'fuck, this should be the mgs theme playing right now.'

That's more like getting a vibe than using parts of the music. And I get that vibe from quite a few pieces of scifi music.
