IGN preview.

Quote:
Both PS3s and 360s were being used to show off the game, which was great as I was able to see both versions running side-by-side. As expected, the 360 version was noticeably less crisp than its PS3 counterpart, but it still ran nicely.

I was actually a fan of almost every voice I heard in the trailer...but what the fuck is going on there and why should I want it? This is such a far cry from VI, VII, VIII, IX and XII. It's got similarities to FFX from what I can see so I can only hope it'll at least be as good as that.

It sounds like the voice acting was done where each line of dialog was individual and not part of a scene and they just slapped it all together at the end. That never works.

The actors themselves have nice voices (well except fang, she sounds retarded).

So, just to clarify. All character movement is with the stick. All UI movement is with the pad.

Pretty stupid of them to do that when the 360 d-pad sucks. I don't think it will be a huge deal though since it's just for menus, but it would of been fucking horrible if we have to use the dpad for movements.

You do, in battle. The d-pad is used to switch roles and is very fast-paced. I found my self switching sometimes several times per battle.

I think he's concerned with moving your character around on the map. Have any of the Final Fantasy games ever mapped UI controls to the stick?

Using the analog stick for menus has always been retarded anyway. It's like using analog stick for 2D fighters.. It's actually a binary control scheme (on/off: no in between) so using the stick just handicaps how fast you can navigate. Just use the d-pad.

I like the music in FFXIII a lot, but I can't stand "kimi ga iru kara". It is just throwaway J-Pop. That isn't to say the English tune is some amazing masterpiece, but I think it is at least on the same level if not better than the Japanese counterpart.

You get a majority of them just by playing through the story. The other ones aren't too hard to obtain except for the ridiculous 'hold every weapon and accessory' one.

I didn't think the voice acting was that bad personally. As a Brit, sometimes the hammed up US accents in RPGs can really get on my tits, but these seemed ok, 1 or 2 borderline, but all fine in all.

As for the actual substance though... DONT YOU EVEN! :lol Quite embarrasing. I'm pretty much pinning all hope on the battle system. I've heard that's fun though so fingers crossed.

Anyon eelse think that song with that trailer seemed a lot like those horrible YouTube "tribute" videos of older FF games?! :lol

A major business full of people whose prime qualifications are "looks good in an upside-down swimsuit" or "spent seven digits in tuition at Y*y*gi", and who make $50-$100 per diem. :lol

That's not to say that there isn't a bigger pool of midtier talent, and you don't have to try a bit harder to make something truly horrid. But it's not like it's impossible to get a lot of voiceover experience in the US, and easily 75% of the battle is voice direction anyway--and SE typically knows not to skimp on the director.

In most cases, even a cheesy Japanese dialogue is still a lot more bearable than its English counterpart. Example: SO4. The cringe-worthy, high-pitched voice/behavior of some of the female characters actually don't sound too bad in Japanese even though they two actors deliver the same ham-fisted dialogue. Mostly because the Japanese VAs are able to convey that the characters really do sound like that (cute) whereas the English VAs strain hard to achieve similar voice/personality. As a result, the cute voice they made seems forced and awkward. And that did not even cover intonation and tonal range, which usually lacks from English VAs.

VAs in Japan look good? :lol. There was that pic posted on LOL-taku which shows the face of the majority of female VAs in Japan. The majority of them are not what you'd call "good-looking". Some of them, however, do get hired mostly on their ability to deliver what they call "moe voices". Yes, they don't get paid much and that's why they are more competitive because sometimes they have to work on 2-3 shows just to cover their living expenses.

Really? When it comes to that stuff Japan VA just sound annoying ass hell. Cute is not the word anyone should use to describe voices like that. Unless of course you are a pedo. They sound just as forced as the American VA. I doubt a real grown women sounds like some child and I feel the only reason people feel most of the time that Japanese VA is better is they themselves don't speak Japanese.

Vanilla's Japanese VA sounds just as annoyingly cute as her American VA.

Still both are fine. The American dub is fine.

Or: ITT people assume other people's ability is lesser than theirs. Just because the trailer wasn't up your alley it doesn't mean other people don't like it. I don't see what's wrong with Lightning's speech about wanting to protect Serah and that's why she changed her name. It works within the confines of the story and the delivery was a pitch perfect of sadness/helplessness from the VAs.

Well, D'OH! Of course they don't speak like that in reality. The characters, however, are the typical female-child persona popular in JRPG. Creepy? Well, you're going to play the game so don't act holier-than-thou. That sort of voice is something that many Japanese VAs are used to deliver and something that American VAs just have awkward time fulfilling the role. And oh, sorry, I don't like little girls. I like grown-ass men.

Well, obviously it's not quality VAs that SE hired for the English version of this game.
Majority, sure, just like the majority of them probably skipped that one trade school. Still doesn't mean there isn't a sizable population putting out gravure books.
The field is entirely seniority and connections-based, and there really isn't a means to reward talent in actual voice acting; unless you're doing porn pay is entirely per-diem and based on years in the union. This creates competition, sure, but most of the ways to pull yourself ahead and gain longevity and fortune in the field have very little to do with actual voice acting, so it really isn't as beneficial straight-up as you make it out to be.

I'm really not finding too much wrong with the VA themselves, listening to the trailer. Lightning's direction is a bit too deadpan, and I'm really not sure I like Fang's accent, but the horrible awkward lines tend to be horrible and awkward in Japanese too.

Hah, speaking of trophies. I saw someone on my friends' list playing the game and did a trophy compare, and noticed all the trophy names in English and had a minor freakout... I thought (for a fairly brief moment) that somehow, somewhere, a street date was broken two months early or someone got one hell of a hook-up.

Yeah, I'm anticipating this game way too much...
