I downloaded the Nexus One Gallery apk and installed it onto my mytouch slide. Its pretty cool, but does anyone know how I can sync my picasa acct to it? I thought it was supposed to do it automatically, but its not.

Also, is anyone else getting "generic network failure" when receiving mms on tmobile? I think I found a slight workaround (turn off wi-fi), but its kind of annoying.

And just a heads up for anyone looking for a screen cap program. ShootMe works. Says you need a rooted phone, but it works fine on my non-rooted mytouch slide.

It should just pick up on whatever google account you've synced your system to automatically. Do you maybe have more than one account and your picasa acct is on another google acct?

It's a setting in main settings and syncing. In accounts, Picasa should be an option within your Google account. It wasn't there on my Droid despite having 2.1, I had to do a factory reset to get it to appear.

Either way, it kinda sucks. It syncs with the folders in Picasa, I thought it would sync pictures I take to Picasa automatically. Seeing as how I use Dropbox for storage of documents/pictures and how the only pics in my Picasa are uploaded there from my Droid, having a folder in my Gallery that downloads that folder back from Picasa serves no purpose what so ever.

I'm confused, your Picasa folders are "streamed" onto your phone. Thye're not really available on your phone...I think.

But having an option to sync the "camera" folder would be cool...but only when the phone is docked and only through wifi.

no they aren't stored on your phone. It takes two clicks to upload a pictured taken to picasa from your phone

Oh. Well whether downloaded and synced or just a link to the cloud, it puts a folder into the Gallery of Picasa to look at pictures. That serves no purpose for me.

Uploading to Picasa yourself is just two or three steps, but it's a little annoying to have to do it manually all the time and there are often odd errors for no reason, where I have to retry a few times for a picture. Still prefer it over taking out a cable so I'm not complaining, but yeah. I find the Picasa folder "sync" absolutely useless.

*shrugs*, I just wait till I have several photos built up, then select all and send them all at once.

Does anyone know an alarm app that requires a password to turn it off. I think I keep turning mine off in a sleeplike state and go back to bed >_<

What makes you think you won't input the password with your eyes close? :lol

Make it so you have to draw a random pattern, although that could be considered to be borderline toture.

Photobucket works nicely if you want all your photos uploaded automatically as you take them. I used it for a while, turned off the auto upload as I don't want literally everything uploaded.

So of course I'm not sure if this has been posted already, but I was skimming through the Android forum and came across a link to a video player that plays Avi/divx/flv movies. You can download it here. It's a .apk file so you will need to install it via something like App Installer.

I have a few avi movies on my computer so I transferred a couple over and they played just fine. The quickest place I knew to grab flv movies was xvideo. I downloaded a couple scenes and wouldn't you know it ,they played fine. The timing of the sound was off in the flv videos so I guess it will matter if you're watching anything other than porn.

It also plays your mp4 files, although I havent spent enough time with it to judge the quality versus the stock player. All in all I'm pretty happy since this is exactly what I was looking for. Now all I need is some sort of wmv player and the circle will be complete.

So today I helped my wife put ios 4 on her 3gs. Its definitely a step up for apple, but it still felt bare for me since I've grown accustomed to widgets and all kinds of data constantly feeding into my phone at all times. By comparison, the iphone felt like a slow paced, laid back experience while my nexus one is moving data at me at breakneck speed. The home screen is static and serene, compared to the amount of data I can get by just looking at my nexus one. I think that is symbolic of the apple vs. google philosophy. I just wish google would hurry up with froyo.

Downloaded the update...dare I say it, but Maps could almost be Android's killer app. It's seriously chockful of functionality at this point, almost to the point of being too encumbered with features. There's so many layers to what you can do with Maps at this point. Latitude, Buzz, Local...the transit departure times is seriously useful to me, assuming they can keep it accurate and up-to-date. iSepta.org, you had a good run.

Shopper also got an decent update today - Added local stores, support for UK merchants, added a links section for details from Wikipedia, IMDB and others, added new Tracks section when search is for music (so if you search for an album, it list the tracks on the album - no preview of the songs though). Still no QR code support though, which is absolutely baffling.

I never even knew of isepta.org either, bah would have been useful a few months ago, but yes, i checked the trolly stop near my house which is actually under construction and they are using a modified bus schedule and it was right, so hey, they got something right on it

Cheers for the heads up, I'd not downloaded Shopper yet due to the lack of UK support. Must go find my Hero and download it now.

Lol I know exactly where u live. I pass that trolly construction all the time going from the airport to Ardmore.

And thanks to whoever posted that divx player. I'm in the market for a new phone and video playback is important. That's why I was gonna get the Sammy galaxy S. But with that I could get a evo.

Right now I'm on the iPhone and I use a program called airvideo. It auto converts and streams all your movies on your computer to your phone. Is there a app like that on android?

20% of Android Apps Seize Private Data

According to a report by SMobile Systems, entitled "Threat Analysis of the Android Market," Google allows one-fifth of its Android applications to access private data that could be used for malicious purposes.

Surveying 48,694 Android applications, or 68% of currently available apps, 29 were additionally found to request information from the user that have been well-documented as fitting the profile of known spyware.

Open access to the Android by developer talent and the openness of the system to manipulation are currently balanced.

Here are some additional findings.

"A full eight applications explicitly request a specific permission that would allow the device to brick itself, or render it absolutely unusable. 383 applications were found to have the ability to read or use the authentication credentials from another service or application. Finally, 3% of all of the Market submissions that have been analyzed could allow an application to send unknown premium SMS messages without the user's interaction or authorization."

FULL PDF: http://threatcenter.smobilesystems....Android-Market-Threat-Analysis-6-22-10-v1.pdf

That whole sending SMS without me knowing is a no no. When I have time I will read the whole report.

Wonder if this has been posted on to the Android Google Groups?

It's more than a little sensationalist. This analysis is simply based on the permissions that each app explicitly has to request upon install and which you see before installation. So you can opt out before installing any of these apps if you don't like the sound of allowing the app to SMS messages on its own.

Seriously. I'll be in New York tomorrow through Sunday and have been going into maps just starring stuff that's on my itinerary and other stuff I want to do. The only thing that's missing is a way to make an actual itinerary in maps that can feed you the appropriate trains, directions, and stuff as you go through your day. Setting up something like that may be better to actually create on the web maps interface, but being able to access it via the maps Android app would be so cool.

Maps + Calendar. In Calendar you can set a location for different events, and if you have GPS on, you just tap on the address and use navigate to get you there. Not an all-in-one, but literally one press since you can have calendar notifications show up as alerts (not just in the notification bar). PEACE.

Yep, I discovered this a few days after having my EVO, and it was one of the coolest things I never knew I could do. Was so awesome.

What is the best way for me to be able to edit documents on my PC and then be able to access and edit them on my phone? I know the EVO comes with some sort of Office software but I haven't messed with it yet and didn't know if you could edit docs or if it was read only. Is Google Docs the best thing to do?

Like you, I never used the Office app on the phone. Now that it's rooted, the ROM I used removed it. I think Google Docs should suffice since we have a larger screen than most. Also an added bonus is the speech-to-text feature to ease the pain. I've only used Excel on Docs with my Hero, and that small screen was rather unpleasant to use. PEACE.

Does this mean that I can do a manual update to 2.2 on my Droid in the very near future without jumping through a bunch of hoops?

It means the source code for Froyo is finalized, official, and OPEN.
So mods can release their own version of the OS onto devices...including the Droid.

An official update to the Droid will likely happen down the road, not sure how soon.

Very true, sometimes I forget to use the voice to text feature, then I remember it and remember another reason why I love my phone/Google so much.

I don't want my wife to abandon iphone. For one, its so simple to use and mostly worry free that its perfect for her. Also, it gives me access to all the awesome games that we don't get here on android. I'm upgrade eligible this year, but I agreed to give her my upgrade since she allowed me to splurge on my nexus one. I'm sure she's going to pick up the iphone 4, which means I'll get to play with it. That leaves me eligible next year for whatever awesome android or windows phone or iphone 5 is out next summer.

Also, I think you are on the same boat as me in terms of waiting for froyo. I did another quick google search and there is still no totally safe way to upgrade an at&t phone since it flashes the radio, and the leaked froyo was for the t mobile phone. It may still screw up the reception.

yup, i'm the same as you, the wife likes my nexus one but its not really viable and like you, was a splurge for me. My upgrade is up this fall, and i was giving to my wife for an iphone because there was no viable Android alternative on ATT, but Samsung changed that a bit.

That being said i'm kinda with you on it, i want my wife to get the iphone 4 because of a few reasons, she's fully invested in itunes, its pretty idiot proof, and i really want to play some games on it as well :)

I'm waiting until froyo gets OTA'd for the nexus one so i don't run into issues. It shouldn't take long to bundle 2.2 with Nexus One updates into an OTA update... so with it going gold today i'm hopeful for OTA update by the end of this month

Indeed I have the 2.2 SDK from I/O but it wasn’t ‘final’, right?

Yup, it was. Google probably releases the emulator images ahead of the source in order to tidy it up or ensure compatibility, etc. They probably also want app devs to check it out before handsets start running it.

Hm, why the old build # in the emulator? Latest I heard, even FRF72 wasn’t final yet.

Dunno. All I know is that barring some fundamental API glitching, the emulator image shouldn't need to be updated.

Sorry, haven't checked the thread in a while, thanks for the feedback on the gallery problem. I think I'd have to do a factory reset since picasa doesn't show up in my sync accounts. Probably cause I didn't have a picasa acct when I got the phone. In any case, it shouldn't matter much, I was thinking of switching to picasa, but I'm probably going to stay with Fotki (even though they only have one good android app).
