If any of you played and enjoyed Human Error (I did, for the most part), the next mod by the "Half-Life 2 Short Stories" team has now released: Water. Page is a bit NSFW due to nipple-less mermaid boobies, but if Princess Ruto can get away with it in Ocarina of Time, don't see why this lady can't (though there is some concept art if you dig around that totally has nipples, so be warned).
There's a trailer here, but it offers little in the way of showing you what the mod actually plays like. Concept art suggests some sort of karma system, however. Like Human Error, it looks like these guys are really trying to push their own limits. Which means expect to see somewhat awkward animation, sort of weird custom models, etc. But at the very least, it looks like they're trying something new, so good on'em. As you can expect I haven't actually played this for myself yet as I'm a bit busy with other stuff, but I saw it come up on Moddb while browsing around. |

![]() Just finished Precursor. What an excellent mod! I still think MINERVA is a tighter experience, but this was totally something that could've come from Valve themselves (not just because of production values, but stylistically and in terms of pacing too). Excellent gameplay and production values all around. I also downloaded the new Capture the Flag mod. I think there's just a wee bit too many stuff. The addition of SLAM is fine since that was in Deathmatch but the whole Rune thing I feel is a bit much. Plus there's like 3 more rifles (sniper rifle, M4, HL2 beta rifle), 1 more pistol (Alyx gun), and 1 new heavy weapon (rail gun). It's kinda how I felt when I played Opposing Force: Capture the Flag, I don't need all these new weapons... Finally, for those of you with the original Half-Life, Cry of Fear is coming out soon. If you've never played Afraid of Monsters: Director's Cut, just know that it'll probably be one of the best Half-Life mods ever. Link: http://www.moddb.com/mods/cry-of-fear/ |

I'd definitely say so, it makes mods like Zombie Panic and Zombie Master seem soundly dated in comparison. Art, lighting, tension, challenge, animation and models, in every respect I can think of it's pulled ahead of the old community staples.

Overwatch: 1.5.0 Update
#515
http://www.moddb.com/mods/overwatch/...0-ost-released Looks to be the last major release for the mod, some new maps and features (Combine Helicopter can carpet bomb, Strider on one of the maps) are included. I remember Citadel being pretty damned fun, even though it was plastered with orange and grey dev textures the last I played (long since textures, that was a good while ago. Seems like years [!]). Just realized the OP is now missing a ton of thumbnails, ack! >-> |

Oh man they're making another Jaykin' Bacon, this time for the Source Engine.
http://www.moddb.com/mods/jaykin-bacon-episode-three For those of you not in the know, the original Jaykin' Bacon: Source was a HL1 mod that very blatantly stole a ton of stuff from basically all the cooler mods and threw it all in to a big pot and dialed the stupid up to 11. Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, Pirates Vikings and Knights, Action Half-Life, etc. But it also had some ideas of its own. The author was obviously a big fan of Metal Gear Solid, so there was like, a stealth box you could use to hide from enemies, Revolver Ocelot's pistol (complete with goofy voice clips every time you reloaded). It wasn't anything you could take seriously but it was a blast regardless. The original trailer for the HL1 mod is here. The original author, ThePodunkian, tried to do a HL2 version of it ages ago but it quickly died a quiet death. Now it looks like he's handed the reins off to somebody else and they're looking to make it nice and stupid again, but also... deeper? In the most recent update they talk about the customization options they're making for servers and stuff. Here's a pretty good video from their updated "Snake vs. Terrorists" mode, where one player is Solid Snake and everybody else in the server has to kill him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HU0Bekl8nw4 If you don't get it, while in the stealth box and sitting still you are totally invisible. |

Forget to mention Aberration, I've been watching it's development the past few months and it seems to be nearing its first release. Only noticed tonight that it evidently will have prominent horror elements, damn. Already concluded on wanting to play it, guess I'll just have to accept this gorgeous little thing scaring the hell out of me.
Oh, and all images have finally been rehosted! Would like to push that L4D post through before the final Cold Stream update drops, ton of good work by the community since this thread first opened that hasn't been acknowledged. |

Hope it arrives speedily! Aberration was good, albeit flawed in some weird ways. Fantastic atmosphere all around.
And more Mission Improbable news! They've gone ahead and begun work on a 4th map, bumping up the final release to two remastered maps and two brand new (2, 3, and 4 below respectively). |

Got through it in about an hour and twenty-five minutes, really enjoyed it.
- The overhaul of the older maps looks lovely, nice to see the improved lighting, atmospheric fog, the added foliage, and the strong use of colour correction. - New addition: The little detour map in between 1 and 2. Looked splendid, and was very tense at spots (especially when I was trying to throw off a horde of antlions to find the ladder again). - New addition: Combine depot. In respects it reminded me a lot of Minerva: Metastasis' underground Combine facilities, down to the deeper-crawling elevator shafts and the sprawling chambers with labyrinthine machinery. I rather like how they played in practice, there were numerous Soldiers but also ample cover and alternating pathways to use when things got a little too hot. - New addition: River cabin. I like the recurring element of Combine air vehicles cutting the ground out from under me when I least expect it, adds a dash of the unexpected and a looming question: "Am I about to die?" The crate full of cans was a cute touch, as was bringing back Hawking for the purpose of shooting down the helicopter. - RIP: That guy who used to call for help underneath the floorboards, but now no longer does. - Recorded a playthrough here (4:50~ for start), though it was plagued with horrendous flickering issues. TL;DR: One of the best HL2 singleplayer mods gets even better. |

Hoof, just played Centralia. It is, uh, not good. It is two maps long and doesn't have a formal ending because of course this is only "part 1". It says it was made by some University students in the UK probably for some game development final.
You get the impression that they played Nightmare House 2 and went "yeah let's do something like that", because I feel like a lot of what's here borrows from that a bit (especially the extreme view bob as you walk). But there's no atmosphere; textures are weirdly cheap looking and feel like they belong in a flash game. Lightning is decent, but I ran in to a few weird lighting bugs (those are doors). First map ends after only a few minutes once you start the generator to an elevator that leads you down in to the mines, which apparently crashes even though there is nothing to suggest this (it casually descends, fades to black, and you hear a crashing sound). Once in the mines, I ran around in circles because they aren't designed very well and I actually walked right past doorways several times because they were obscured by rocks or barrels. Everything in the mines is typical: shadowy figures seen around corners, loud thumps, and screamers. Nothing terribly haunting or legitimately frightening. For being inside of a mine with a perpetually burning coal fire, there is not much in the way of smoke. Fire exists only in convenient pockets that drive the player to find alternate routes. One of the only legit scares is when you enter a room, find nothing in it, turn around and see a body hung from the ceiling. Exit the room, turn around, and the body is gone but in retrospect there's no context as to why that would be there and it doesn't even make any sense when you consider this is a coal mine. Then you get to a minecart that once you remove the rock obstruction, it crashes through a wooden barrier that makes a glass shattering sound effect and it fades to black. Roll credits. Yes, roll credits. Two maps and maybe 10 or 15 minutes of gameplay (in air quotes, because there were no enemies). I am not terribly interested in a "part 2".

What a shock: Aberration also wears its Nightmare House 2 inspiration on its sleeve. It is about three maps long, lasts around 30-45 minutes. It's quite a bit more visually polished than Centralia, thankfully, and really tries to nail the Nightmare House "horror, then action, then horror, then action" pace beats. And I do mean Nightmare House - at first I was ready to just say the creator was a fan of F.E.A.R., but no, this is Nightmare House, except you fight Combine soldiers in between the horror bits. One of the horror sequences is actually brush-for-brush stolen out of Nightmare House 2 (a hallway that encloses ever tighter until you are in a tiny square room).
It doesn't do too bad of a job, but I found the difficulty to be pretty dang high. The mapper loves those annoying shotgunner Combine and it seems like he did something to their A.I. because they are not afraid to get right up in your face and blast you point blank. I don't remember there being a difficulty selector either, and I eventually wussed out and put on God Mode after an encounter in a warehouse that put me up against a good 10 Combine soldiers and 2 Hunters with no gravity gun and no health stations. Imagine my surprise when, after defeating the first wave, two more squads of soldiers poured out of other doors in the room, and then another two more squads on top of that - a good 30-40 soldiers in all. Suddenly I didn't feel so bad for turning on God mode, and that wasn't even where the mod ended so that doesn't count as a "grand finale". But, much like Centralia, eventually it just faded to black with a "To Be Continued". Eh.
Source SDK Base 2007 was released for free shortly after TF2 went free to play. To download it, see if this link works: steam://run/218 If not, it might be under the "Tools" section of your Steam games list. The wiki mentions other Valve games will probably work too, so Counter-Strike, TF2, Portal, Lost Coast, etc. Failing that, I'm sure there's probably some info on the NMRiH site that will specifically say.

For all the Nightmare House 2 inspiration floating around, perhaps I should get around to playing that one of these days.
Hah, good one! The title alone gives me pause.
Speaking of NMRIH, they made a brief video showing off some 1.05 stuff: http://www.moddb.com/mods/no-more-ro...ta-105-preview |

I'd play more Zombie Master if I thought I could find a game. I never upgraded to the final version because there was maybe 20-30 people that would play it, and a lot of the time servers would just be empty for me.
It's a fun game, though! In a perfect world it would have blossomed in to something awesome. Ubisoft certainly thinks it is cool enough to ripoff wholesale for ZombiU's multiplayer mode (even using the term "zombie master" to describe game mechanics). |

I remember playing a demo of Strider Mountain and being kind of ambivalent about it. It was neither awful nor great. Don't remember much about it now, but I don't think I ever played the final release.

Kind of how I am feeling about another mod I downloaded this morning, Minerva: Metastasis. I am still at the start, so it may get better. But it is alright so far, and it's neat to have an additional slice of some Half-Life 2. Pretty challenging as well. Any other recommendations?

Minerva definitely gets better the longer it runs. The other top of the line HL2 SP mods (by my measure, at least) are Research and Development, Mission Improbable, Whoopservatory, Human Error, and Riot Act. OP has a ton of recommends though, so definitely a lot of things to check out if you want to take it all in.

I downloaded and played it last night in one sitting. Awesome mod. One of the best single player mods I've ever played. It's definitely more jump scare than psychological horror, but some of it was very cleverly done and I was surprised quite a bit. The voice acting was very well done and I was impressed with the graphics and art. I am dissapointed that the team said they have no plans for a Monster House 3. I'm gonna check out their newest mod, Underhell I believe. It's supposed to be damn good too.
