The ARG game is coming to an end. Does anyone know the final answer? I don't want to get it wrong in case there's a prize for Home or something.

Edit: Nvm found it. Greg Corgan

You get a trailer to download but I've seen it before. It's the one that starts off with text saying it's using real time footage. It says we're going to get an email with a prize. I'm hoping it's the Home t-shirt Europeans got.

I feel like I'm fucking hanging out in a shady hotel (like St Marks Place in NyC!) Noir "Se7en" as an old, fat Humphrey Bogart. I'm just saying, the atmosphere is top notch. Really can't wait to see all the environments they've put in. This is what happens when big budget money is put into the Adventure genre. Yes, I know Cage said he doesn't consider this "adventure". Not sure how...

If I recall, actually, it's still one of the only hotels in NYC that offer "hourly rates". Way back it used to be a real shady hotel, but they might have cleaned it up the past few years. The area was a notorious drug scene (see Alphabet City) up until Giuliani took office and cleaned NYC up big time. I've seen the hotel in a few documentaries, one called Dope Sick Love, about two addicts and they sometimes hung out on St Marks Place. Again, this may not be the case anymore, I moved from Brooklyn 3 years ago, and it was still a little weird then.

I played the demo, and I am SO, SO psyched for this game it gives you a deep story... Even if it is one giant Quicktime event, it is awesome. However, the thread title doesn't do it justice, I propose a title change:

just got a ps3 yesterday and played part of the demo today. Got through the fight scene, that was pretty cool, but couldn't get fully immersed since I had to keep looking down at the controller to see which button was which :)

also, for some reason had a hard time with the first part where you had to move the controller up and down.

Anyone else feel like that from the demo?

Would have bought it if it was available at a U.S. retailer. The score alone is amazing. Adding overseas shipping kills it for me though, given what else is coming out in Feb. and March. Oh well, have preordered at Amazon here in the States. Hopefully they put the OST up to download at the PSN Store.

Just finished the demo and loved it to bits. The controls didn't bother me a bit after the first 5 minutes, although might be more problematic if things ram up later on. Honestly I just can't wait to play the full thing.

Edit: Oh yeah the fight scene was great. I am just surprised how well the old pudgy detective can dodge those punches.

Color me impressed. I played the game twice and was pleasantly surprised when making different choices truly had different effects. Also the controls take some getting use to but after awhile its second nature. I found myself more immersed in the story than the visuals which surprised me. Looks like a true winner.

I really liked the demo I played earlier, it's just the moving method seemed... odd. It was hard to get used to and even after playing through the full demo I still didn't feel fully comfortable with the movement. The way the game is set up and everything else about it was ace though. It seems like a very, very interesting game and I could see myself picking it up eventually. I don't think I'll day 1 since I'm playing two other games right now (Darksiders and Bioshock 2 come Sunday) and FF13 comes out in a few weeks, but maybe after that. And the graphics... my god... the graphics. I was stunned watching this game in motion.

Finally played the demo last night. I avoided pretty much all trailers or any other footage so far. It took me a moment to get used to the whole "walk where your head is pointing" thing. I was impressed by the presentation, the smooth flow of interaction and story telling. There wasn't much that really bothered me. Can't wait to experience the full game.

Just played the demo and I really like it. Everything was very immersive and the QTEs felt natural most of the time. The fight scene was extremely tense - definitely sold me on how well directed the game will be.

The only thing I don't like are the glasses you wear to investigate a crime scene. Feels too "gamey" in an experience that tries to ground itself in reality. I'm assuming it's set in the near future, but still.

Definite buy.

See, the glasses are the thing in the demo I liked most. Maybe I like some gamey in my mature, I don't know.

I think it's a really cool effect when you drop some singular imaginary device into what is otherwise a real-world setting. You can't say it is over done in, well, anything. Once the decision is made to add something like that in, most creators just pile it on.

Stephen King novels give me this vibe sometimes. Everything in a book might be grounded in the real world. He drops in one imaginary thing and we see how it affects the world we know. A car that is alive, a kid with visions, etc.

Voice acting wasn't so hot and the movement controls were awful, but the story and atmosphere may have sold me. This is definitely a great revamp of the point and click genre, albeit for consoles.

PS Quantic Dream: The climbing up the hill by the train tracks was unbelievably annoying. I don't want to play finger twister. I think I fell down the hill like 7 times before fully 'getting it'.

Maybe I'm the guy with bad taste today, because I seem to be liking what everybody hates. It feels like an expanded version of the ice-climbing sequence in Modern Warfare 2.

I remember hearing on 1up yours/guys/listen that the developer was trying to make you manipulate the controller in such a way that it feel like the action depicted on screen.

I'll admit that I got up and down first try, so maybe failing would have changed my mind. I focused really hard, which I imagine was making me feel like the guy on screen. I was super cautious because I noticed that train comes by periodically, and the tracks are right at the bottom of the hill. You would land on the tracks if you F'd up, so it may be an instance where you could prematurely permadeath a character.

Coming down felt like running down a hill too. You are just on the verge of losing control, but you hit a plateau every now and then to giver yourself a breather. I was having, "Oh shit, here we go" moment when I would eventually initiate the guy running down the next bit of hill.

I think if the rest of the game is as successful as that hill sequence, this game might be mind-blowing for me

Then set the Difficulty to Easy. Problem solved. Only two buttons that are needed to be pressed. It makes ALL stuff like that supereasy, and also take away most of the "Shake controller"-stuff.

Protip: You can release buttons that are no longer being displayed, so in the case of that hill-climb you would never need to be holding more than 2-3 buttons at a time. Before you ask, the tutorial tells you this in the same line as when you have to perform the first multi-button movement.

I have seen this complaint several times. I thought it was one of the better implemented control devices in the game. Really forced me to think about finger placement, and replicated the real world situation about as well as possible: hand over hand, making sure my first placement was secure before stretching for the next.

Although it was certainly different from the normal 3rd person perspective controls, where all you would have to do is push forward and bunny-hop a few times, I enjoyed the change.

It's the standard movement controls in Heavy Rain that have me a bit concerned.

I've already been beaten but that sequence is REALLY easy if you remember to release the buttons no longer being displayed.

The first time I was holding down about 4 or 5 buttons at a time, fell down the hill, then slapped myself for being an idiot once it hit me. Stupid easy once you remember this.

I played the demo last night (on a friend's PS3 for those of you keeping track) and I've got to say I loved it. It was an evolution of Fahrenheit in HD and I loved Fahrenheit.

It looked amazing, the animation was top notch and while the controls were a little weird at first, it works well once you work out what's happening. I felt the first sections of the demo worked better though, with the fixed place cameras. Controlling the FBI guy was more awkward even though it was a nice open environment he was walking around.

This is a Fahrenheit fan's greatest dream come true. I really, really hope it sells well.

I wonder if the game was more on rails in earlier incarnations, but to appeal to gamers they gave us more freedom of movement. I really wasn't expecting to have as much control as I did.

While I can't wait for this game and have it pre-ordered, I was a bit disappointed with the demo...

I guess it's the lack of player freedom I was annoyed with which was something I thought wouldn't be an issue. Examples:

When I was in that one women's room, I couldn't interact with anything except a damn curtain which seemingly did nothing. I was hoping I could search around her room and find someting that would spark a reaction from the lady.

And what about that hill by the train tracks... is there a consequence for slipping down each slope? I fell down every time on my way down and there seemed to be nothing to show for it.

I guess I was a little spoiled by what I expected out of the game. If the agent's glasses or gloves got dirty and deactivated the devices for a brief period would have been enough to keep me immersed in the world.

I suppose it's because I left it running while still logged in at the store instead of downloading it in the background, but the data was nowhere to be found in the XMB and I simply had to restart from the beginning. Very annoying!

Just played the demo and enjoyed it. I really like QTEs that offer branching paths so you don't feel bad if you fail any one segment. I actually really liked climbing up the hill and then going back down again. It seemed to mimic actual motions quite well.

Hopefully the story holds up. I wasn't too bothered by the voice acting as it is still on par with many games. Top tier acting would have been great, but if the story is well designed then I don't think I will have too many issues.

Gaming needs more crime stories in general.

The only ones even attempting to do this in the last decade - off the top of my head - are licensed tripe (the CSI games) and mediocre PC Adventure games (the Agatha Christie series in particular).

Voice acting is a bit off. Wish they would have splurged a little more for some pros. Other than that, the first act of the demo with the old PI was top notch. It was a bit much, with having to do like 8 different motions just to get him to use his inhaler. Other than that it was good. Felt like a next gen progression of the adventure game genre. Didn't care much for the 2nd act. The Ari glasses were corny and it felt like a random easter egg hunt.

Had a blast with the demo, I think it sold me on the game.

I don't know if it was universal, but I definitely ran into some gamma issues. I played through the full first part and into the second part before I got a little suspicious (Why is it pitch black out at 8:03 A.M?) and checked out the options for the gamma tuner. Then when I got it set "correctly" everything just seemed a little washed out. :(

I don't want to make any real judgments on the game till I've played the entire thing, but Heavy Rain seems to be attracting a good deal of pre-release mocking from various people, which is unfortunate.

I'm thankful we're getting another game in the adventure genre again, particularly a high-budget one. They are exceedingly rare. If the sometimes strange dialogue and voice acting didn't belie the game's foreign roots, playing the Heavy Rain demo would have pretty much felt like a throwback.

As you can see in the quote I said it took me 7 times till I 'got it' as in the fact that I didn't need to hold all of them. I don't need to set it to easy or whatever. I know how it works, doesn't change the fact that it felt far too obnoxious for such a small action. The hill wasn't steep at all, and it's not like the rain was so heavy that there'd be a mudslide. The control method makes sense in some situations where they require intensity, but this one was just unnecessary.

Have you tried the demo? That would be a better way of knowing whether or not you'll like the game mechanics. The QTEs are not like most games, it's not a 'rewind and do it over' sort of thing. Most continue moving. The fight sequence was excellent with showing this off.

yes, I think you will. some of these "quicktime" events are as gripping as they come. also, it's not real quicktime events, I mean you can absolutely fail them and still "succeed", it's not like in GoW where if you miss, you have to retry.

Played the demo.

Great graphics.

Terrible everything else. A button to walk? Really? When you still need the analog stick to steer?

And then all the "omg realistic game" is thrown out of the window when the FBI agent starts wearing his cyber glasses.

It's a really annoying game. It's like having to turn a crank to watch a movie.

And this somehow manages to make QTEs more annoying than they normally are. Pressing three buttons at the same time is silly, and people here are saying that figure just goes up?
