I made something for a class at school that I thought you all could appreciate.

The soundtrack is still a mainstay on my MP3 player.

That is very cool. How did you make it? What sort of class was it? Nice job.

Hah! I would love to, but it's a 3D model. It was for a class in "Houdini", a procedural modeling and animation software. The idea was to create a program that could model a music box based on any input melody and re-synthesize that melody with music box samples, but the program (and my knowledge of it) aren't quite up to the task yet. I wound up coding the song in by hand and became VERY familiar with it as a result.

The fact that I still like the song is a testament to how good the music in the game is. ;)

After finishing this a few weeks back and reading up on Grimoire Nier; i really wanted to enjoy this but the game feels like someone pulled out the half-baked cake out of the oven.

The story being one of its biggest strengths, is also one of its biggest weaknesses. There are only 4 major story development scenes in the entire game (prologue, the library scene, final dungeon, and the handful new game + scenes) in a game that roughly would take 30-50hours or so to complete. Whilst the plot is ambitious (or regular for a japanese game) and interesting, the majority of it being cut out due to budget restraints really held back the potential. I'll go as far as saying that the events leading up to Nier in Shinjuku (the Walls of Jericho + Legion etc) were more interesting than the tale of Nier and his daughter/sister.

Then there is the rest of my complaints. The post-processing effects were not beneficial at all, to the point where I had to turn down my brightness entering Seafront because of the overkill of bloom. 90% of the side-quests are basic fetch quests which aren't fun at all. The battle system is simplistic which little to no strategy. And the game perhaps recycled too much of its own content (doing the same Shrine dungeon 3-4 times).

Also; one thing I never understood about the game. What was with the deal with Kaine being impaled/killed/wounded every 2 hours or so with no consequence? Some domestic violence message I missed or something?

If you loaded up a new game + for Kaine's story you'd know why.

Because her replicant body was invaded by a gestalt (Tyrann) upon her near-death experience? Yea, i figured that as much. Just found it really odd and amusing that Kaine at every boss would be like "hold back everyone, i got this #$#$@W bastard" and proceeds to get immediately impaled

I love seeing this thread bumped every so often. Just reminds me of how wonderful an experience Nier was to me.

So many great aspects of the game, one of my favourites being Facade. Lovely design, and lovely theme song.

Ahhh Nier <3

Well, it's less Square-Enix paying attention than Cavia being closed literally a month after Nier released.

I suppose SE still has IP rights and can expand on it, but it wouldn't be Nier without Yoko Taro.

Why would you play this primarily for the gameplay? The gameplay was alright but it was not the main draw.

I even got a good friend into it and he agreed the gameplay sucks but the characters make the whole thing worth it.

The gameplay is actually pretty good! I liked how many genres the designers toyed around with--hack n' slash, bullet hell, Zelda...in the end, their reach exceeded their grasp, but at least they TRIED. You can tell that the people who worked on the game really put everything they could into it, but didn't have enough time or manpower to have this weird omni-game they'd conceived realized in full.

I agree. I had a blast with the gameplay, overall. Even the MUD style parts were quite good. The only part I wasn't fond of was that place with all the robots (the name slips my mind now). I always got lost in there, and it was just a pain in the ass to get around. Other than that, I was fine with the rest.

I just started playing this game (About 2-3 hours in, just finished the shrine) its surprisingly good. Fantastic soundtrack, love the combat.

Im waiting for Kingdoms of Amalur or whatever and this was sealed so i thought id try this or Resonance of Fate or Blue Dragon.

Really happy with the choice so far, seems to be a great game! Much more enjoyable initially than FFXIII

The gameplay is strange, but it's not actually bad. I'm easy to please and like hack and slash games though. Ordinarily I'd have argued that there's no way I could enjoy any game with completely reprehensible combat, but then I remember I've put 70 hours into Skyrim. But this definitely plays better than Skyrim. :p

I keep trying to get back into the game but it's so damn hard. My last save was over christmas break last year and I don't really remember the story and characters so it's hard for me to connect. Could someone who's beaten the game tell me how much longer it would take for me to beat it? Spoliers: I believe the last thing that happened was the king's wife in the sand place was kidnapped. I have the skeleton guy(Emil?) and the girl for party members too.

I've finally gotten around to play this. I have a question though.

Is there ever any kind of fast travel? I'm not that far in the game and it's already getting tiring running back and forth through long levels.

It's only the trek through the main connecting area that takes a little time, however a little into the game you get a means of crossing that more quickly. There's never a "select destination" system though, or if there is I didn't find it.

It's very similar to Ocarina of Time in that you had to cross Hyrule Field every time you wanted to go to a different location.

You're about 3/4 of the way through it at that point. Though, you can do things in a different order, so it's difficult to tell exactly how much left you have to go based off just that.

Four, IIRC. The common belief around here is that if you haven't gotten the second ending (which is just the first time beating it again) you haven't actually completed the game, which I happen to agree with. There's a lot more to see story wise even after the credits roll.

There's 4 endings. You can (and you should, IMHO) play the second half three more times.

Nier is amazing. Even if the story isn't your bag -- it was a little bleak for my tastes -- the soundtrack, the voice acting, and the translation are top-notch and you'll have a lot of fun playing it. And the "heroic father" character is far too rare in games these days.

Is there anything you have to do special your you just literally replay each time and it goes A, B, C, D?

You'll be told in-game if there's something you have to do (Which there is for C, I believe), but for B all you need to do is reload your save and kick ass.

Wat? Why?

I got the A and B endings and didn't like the requirements for C and D so watched them on youtube. I was under the impression that playthroughs after the B ending didn't have anything new aside from just the endings (whereas there is quite a bit of new stuff during the course of the game on your B play through).

Was I wrong? Is there new stuff to be seen during more replays?

Ending D only makes sense if you actually earn it.

Watching it on Youtube loses the most important part of the experience.

C/D don't take long to get at all, you're so overpowered by that stage on Normal its just a case of doing what's necessary to acquire the weapons. Its worth doing it just to get the speedkill achievements.

And most importantly, when you qualify (got all the basic weapons), just leave a spare save at the last save-point. So you can restart from that point after getting ending C.

Oops, yes, that's better advice than replaying it 3 times. This way is just twice. Oh, and sit all the way through the credits if you want the ending trophies. I never got the C trophy.

That kinda stuff is not my cup of tea, not to mention I don't really care for trophies/achievements.

I got it by selling excess stuff I got while farming for weapon upgrades. The Junkheap is a good place for that. (Never finished all 30 weapons, I got through 15 of them.)

Edit:
That got me most of the way there. When I was close enough I sold absolutely everything in my inventory to get it and then reloaded.
