Iwata Asks: Fire Emblem New Mystery of the Emblem: Heroes of Light and Shadow #1

Partial translation http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/201...lem_iwata_asks
The feature with characters gaining xp when not playing the game reminds me of TWEWY pins evolving.

Well, maybe they didn't want their game being thought of as being too easy.

On an unrelated note, do you know where I can find a bigger version of your avatar?

that's fair, but still, 4 months is a lot of time to argue over a single game mechanic. i'm just surprised it took them that long to find this compromise solution.

thinking about it, i'm kind of wondering how easy Casual Mode will be even on the harder difficulties. difficulty in FE games is more geared toward trying to keep your entire army alive rather than worrying about your army being totally routed, so as long as you keep the lord protected...

as for the avatar, here you go.

I only skimmed the summary. I want a real translation!

Even when the game is off, time flows in the game world. Your characters will head off on their own in search of items and also build experience. You can see what types of items your characters have gathered by visiting the pre battle prep screen.
Interesting. Sounds like a sort of replacement for the bonus exp in the console games. I think I would have liked it better if the player had some influence in it, but I'll wait till I see it in action.

Is the art style can be different? Cause Shadow Dragon was really ugly.

Can't believe they even debated about permadeath. It ain't Fire Emblem without permadeath and resetting like crazy.

on the other hand, depending on how this works it could be less prone to abuse than bonus experience was.

Don't worry, the game is insanely hard. My guess is even in Casual, the lunatic difficulty will just eat through your army until all you have is Marth. That or kill Marth within a turn. Enemies start with Silver and Forged weapons in chapter 1.

I'm really glad they finally added the option to ditch permanent death. It's the only thing that I don't like about the series, and has unfortunately also been the thing that has kept me from beating all but one or two of the games.

I'm not surprised that it took so long to come to a consensus. Casual mode breaks the singular most cardinal rule of Fire Emblem after all!

Having a choice is always great. This will satisfy people from both sides. You can't complain about it either way.

I don't mind that they added an option to remove permadeath, but I wish they kept it tied to the lower difficulty settings. That'd solidify "Classic" as the "true" Fire Emblem mode.

Also, I'm not too keen on this idea that your characters gain items and XP while your game is shut off. It's a bizarre option to grind. I just prefer a singularly balanced experience, no time-lapse grinding, no towers; just good level design and character balance.

Yep. There have been numerous times throughout the many games within the series that I've played where I encountered a mission that I repeated more than I should have simply because I made the wrong decisions throughout a 30+ move scenario. It was during those moments where I wished for a non-perma death option.

It will be interesting to see what option I choose when the time comes.

it'll get shortened for the US release, i'm sure. Shadow Dragon did.

Eh, it's better than "The Legend of Zelda: Nut of the Mysterious Tree: Chapter of Time and Space" Oracle of Ages in Japan

Ok... I stand corrected, people will complain...

Dude, it's like the game offering 8 different difficulty modes. Casual mode itself isn't a difficulty mode, it's something you can apply to any of the 4 available difficulty settings. The same is true for classic mode.

There's also a Reverse mode. I just found out about it so I don't know much about it other than enemies move first.

A thread from the past ...

It is DSi-Enhanced yes, I assume region-locked.
And chances are nil, yes. We are now praying for the 3DS one.
