Bloomberg:Sony Raises Profit Forecast, Citing Demand for TVs, Consumer Electronics

Sony Corp., the world’s No.3 television maker, raised its full-year earnings forecasts after sales of TVs helped the company post an unexpected profit last quarter.

Net income will probably be 60 billion yen ($688 million) in the year ending March 2011, compared with an earlier projection of 50 billion yen, the Tokyo-based company said in a statement today. Operating profit, or sales minus the cost of goods sold and administrative expenses, may be 180 billion yen, compared with the 160 billion yen forecast in May.

Chief Executive Officer Howard Stringer has started to focus on new products as the global economic recovery revives consumer demand. The maker of Bravia TVs in May unveiled the prototype of a set that will deliver video and music over the Internet in partnership with Google Inc. and started selling 3-D TVs in the U.S., Europe and Japan last month.

Sony added 0.1 percent to close at 2,611 yen in Tokyo trading before the announcement, narrowing its loss this year to 2.2 percent. Samsung Electronics Co. has advanced 3.5 percent, while Panasonic Corp., Sony’s closest domestic rival, has lost 19 percent, while the benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average has declined 8.1 percent this year.

First-quarter net income totaled 25.7 billion yen, compared with a 37.1 billion yen loss recorded a year earlier, Sony said. The median estimate by six analysts in a Bloomberg News survey was for a shortfall of 18 billion yen.

The used software market for ps2 games is big - you can get most games for cheap that way.

The machine is also now being shipped (in volume) to markets that are traditionally piracy havens at a time when Sony have finally made some breakthroughs in curtailing PSP piracy with recent hardware revisions (though that work may become undone rather soon). There's also the fact that no decen PS2 software is still being made while the PSP still ahs a steady stream of decent new releases.

I didn't expect such strong PS3 sales with the system already at 38.1m LTD (and just a 3.6m difference with the 360).
PS2 and PSP sales are interesting too. PS2 software sales are really low, at this point they really need to put those PS2 games on PSN, remastering a few collections in HD is not enough, it takes too long to bring them to the market.
PSP on the contrary really needs a price cut to spur hardware sales.

its crazy that they were able to reach about that much with no next-gen competition.....where as the Wii and the expensive PS3 had to all fight each other.....or in the Wii's case had front row seats with the ring girls...watching the HD Twins go at it.

Actually I remember that they overshipped like crazy to be able to announce in November 2006 (when PS3 and Wii were launched) that they shipped 10m and the first to ship 10m always wins :lol

LOL yes, the naive SCEE was ready to air the PS3 launch ads when Kutaragi woke up in Japan and without having previously warned anyone he announced that the euro launch was delayed until spring 2007 (March). That was the last crazy thing KK did at Sony :(

Well, Microsoft touted a worldwide launch - which didn't exactly go as planned. Later they said: "well, maybe there was a reason why no one has done that before". Something along those lines.

The PS3's staggered launch, with Europe getting it in March 2007, basically had the same supply constraints, but was (as far as I remember) more able to serve the demand in the different markets (with a little help from the high launch price of the console).

So PS3 did it great with almost x2 YoY in both HW and SW, PSP HW almost flat and but improved SW. And PS2 HW still selling the same!

What a failures! For sure, they're doomed and are going to leave gaming. :D

I think it's pretty clear people who buys now a PS2 is to play old PS2 games, not new ones.

I would love to see a quote on this one. A company does not ever overship a product, unless they are say Apple and shipping to their own stores, but maybe companies like Best Buy and Gamestop overbuy something, but you cannot ship a product that nobody is buying to inflate your numbers.

In the US didn't the small lead Sony got after the slim launched disappear a month or so into the new year? I think by the end of the year they were only up on the 360 by like 150k. The lead in the US hasn't changed much if at all so where are the other numbers coming from that we know of? Obviously Japan is contributing but where else are these numbers coming from?

Even with the difference both have now almost the same total hardware base (40mio) so the 3-4mio are bascially neglectable.
Though the 360 has a stronger US market and the PS3 a stronger JP market which still can influence sells for multiplatform games depending on the principle audience they are going for.

build better product and it will sell.... massive improvements in TV sales were obvious as Sony introduced stylish yet cheap lower end TVs (finally)... same goes for digital cameras with recent releases and newer vaio models.

p.s. here in eastern europe, you get chipped PS2 from "official" sony retailers, together with 10 free (pirated) games.

I think it's more about the price cut and new marketing push than it is the new physical design; even if the new design contributed to that sustained growth. They still have the advantage of being able to go down to the 200-dollar price point in the future.

Even at 300 dollars, it's still a high price for most people. Further cuts will lead to even more growth.
