Disney’s ‘Toy Story 3’ resumes command of the top spot (-25%) having been held off last week by Activision Blizzard’s ‘Starcraft II’.

A general renaissance of the PS3 version of ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ means that the Activision Blizzard multi-format title storms back up to No2 overall (+21%), a position it has not reached since week 3 this year. It also means that the title is poised to overtake ‘Dr Kawashima’ on DS as the UK biggest unit seller and this may even happen next week. Ubisoft’s Wii ‘Dance on Broadway’ moves up one place to No3 (-4%) and last week’s No1 is now No4, the aforementioned ‘Starcraft II’ (-72%). Rockstar / Take 2’s ‘Red Dead Redemption’ drops to a lowest ever position of No5 after 12 weeks on chart (-19%). There are 2 new entries this week. The first is Nintendo’s DS ‘Art Academy’ debuting at No28 and the second is GSP/Avanquest’s ‘Hidden Mysteries: Titanic’ at No32 (+64%) thanks to the launch last week of DS/Wii versions, of which the DS version is up 70% over last week, accounting for 80% of overall sales (PC version launched week 2 this year).

Waiting for hard numbers, as the placing and hold is great but could be misleading.

SMG2 still holding strong - it's got to be outperforming SMG at this stage, surely?

And hell yeah to DQ9, an actual bonafide hit outside JP I think

I am curious, is there some kind of japanophile fanbase in France?

I mean, is it a land where people like japanese Anime, Manga, J-pop songs and stuff?

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Don't worry about SC2.

Naaah, this is just the country where they sell nearly more manga than the usual comic strip from belgium, have freaking convention dedicated to the stuff (usually Japan expo in Paris July the 4th but that's paris, there's some in nearly all regions).
Jpop though, can't say anyone but the hardcore care about that, mangas/anime and games on the other hand...

Kinda...

http://www.businessweek.com/globalbiz/content/dec2007/gb20071226_346610.htm

...

While Western comics such as Donald Duck, Tintin, and Asterix long dominated the European market, young readers like Malis are looking eastward. The Japan External Trade Organization says German and French sales of manga totaled $212.6 million last year, making Europe the largest consumer of manga outside Japan. Almost two-thirds of the sales are in France, where adults and youngsters alike have long been avid readers of large-format, hardcover comic books known as bandes dessinées.

i believe the french resonate with manga because they have kickass comics (tintin, asterix, lucky luke) of their own that is not as segmented and specific as the superhero comics in america

:lol

Of course japanese culture is very popular in France (I think it's still the 2nd biggest market for mangas after Japan) but the BD sells a lot better. Just check the numbers, even Naruto is ridiculous against Astérix, Titeuf, XIII or Blake & Mortimer.

And it's not "comic strip from belgium" :/ There a lot of belgium artists in the BD so we usually include belgium for explain what is the BD, but there are more french artists.

well yeah but I wasn't exactly sure the term BD existed in english so I used the next best thing : periphrase.
DIdn't check the numbers lately but it seemed the gap wasn't that big last time I checked (eons ago), guess I should follow BD more closely :lol

Not bad going for Art Academy, considering it's not really a game.

It's been available in part on the DSi store for a while. Not seen the TV ads but I've heard mention of them. Amazing start really - I didn't think this would appeal to the Day One crowd. Lets see if the Mass Market buy it to boost it's position in week 2.

Forgive my ignorance - what Week/Year did DQ8 launch in?

I'd say it's going to be doing 20k a week at the moment. These are the lowest sales weeks of the year for new product though (budget & sales is where it is at) so could be much lower.

I was responsible for one of the sales of Dance on Broadway this week and even though I only got to watch the game being played for a short time I already have my moneys worth. :D

Exactly. Just Dance broadens video game market and introduces games to people who otherwise wouldn't touch consoles. I hope Dance Central does well in future, too.

to be fair from my (very) limited knowledge of US comics it might also be because of the preponderance of the superhero trope that permeate from any comics out of the US(I know I'd have a hard time filling a shelf with only comics that are superhero free, but my tastes are peculiar).
Btw I don't remember what type of comic/bd is from the UK

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

ELSPA unveils download chart plans

UK publishing trade body, ELSPA, has unveiled its plans to produce a digital download chart in association with GfK Chart-Track, and confirmed the co-operation of a number of its members.
Among those signed up to the plans already are Ubisoft, THQ, Sega, NCsoft, Mastertronic, Kalypso Media, Midas Interactive and Square Enix, with three more "major publishers" set to confirm their involvement imminently, a statement from the organisation revealed.

The chart, which will be compiled from data contributed by the group members, will focus on PC downloads within the UK, using information from key platforms - including Steam.

The chart itself will undergo a closed beta phase for the next few months while the group evaluates the quality and feasibility of the data, although it's hoped that it will be made public sooner, rather than later.

Exactly. Just Dance broadens video game market and introduces games to people who otherwise wouldn't touch consoles. I hope Dance Central does well in future, too.

The people who play Just Dance will never get into the games that I enjoy. In fact, the more popular video games get the more game devs will try to appeal to the casual crowd which means less "core" games.

The Wii should be proof alone that bringing non-gamers into the fray results in pretty much jack shit for the video game market I or many others care about.

But you didn't. Do you have anything to refute what I said? Thought not.
You just went from dissing casual games to trolling the Wii. I don't think there's anything to refute with such an ignorant agenda.
