The Fifth Generation of Pokémon is here! Pokémon Black and White (henceforth referred to as B/W) are the newest mainline games in the Pokémon Franchise, following the Diamond an Pearl Versions. These titles signal a generational leap for the series similarly to how Gold and Silver did for Red and Blue. B/W take place in the Region of Unova (JP:Isshu), the first not to be based on a Japanese province, but New York. Being a new generation, B/W introduce a whole host of new People, Places, Gyms, Attacks... and of course Pokémon, the first three you'll meet being...

Cheren and Bianca are two Pokemon trainers from your hometown who start out at the same time as you, picking the other two starter Pokémon you choose not to take.


Team Plasma are the villains this time around, seeking to end the "injustice" as they see it being inflicted on Pokémon.

New Features

• Streamlined! Battles have been significantly sped up, dynamic camera angles added and icons to indicate weather.
• Motion! Pokémon are now fully animated with DQ esque sprites.
• Seasons! B/W introduces a seasonal cycle that every four months, changing the game world and some Pokémon.
• Triple Battles! it is now possible to battle with three pokemon at a time.
• Transfers! Players can transfer Pokémon from Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Heart Gold and Superior Soul Silver to B/W using the Pokéshifter minigame.
• Wilderness! Double Pokémon Battles will now occur in the wild.
• Rotation! Rotation Battle is a new 3v3 battle mode where you choose one out of the three Pokémon to attack each turn. It focuses on prediction.
• DSi! B/W are DSi enhanced, one feature among others being 4 person local wireless and wi-fi video chat using the Microphone and DSi camera. The tradeoff is that this means the games are region locked on DSi.
• Seperation! Black and White feature actual version differences, ranging from general cosmetic differences to completely exclusive areas. These areas are aptly named the Black City and White Forest.
• Connection! a new feature called C-link constantly searches for wireless, wi-fi and Infra-red connections while playing, and informs you when one is nearby. This feature can be turned off for the battery concious among you.
• Speed! Infra rad connections allow for speedy battles and trades directly between PC boxes.

Online Modes
Diamond and Pearl were a good first attempt at online for a Pokémon game, and B/W takes things to the next level.

Everything from generation IV is back, but the most obvious improvements are probably Random Matchup which sets you up against an opponent without needing to exchange friend codes beforehand, and Ranked Match mode. It works like pretty much every other ranked mode ever. start off with 1500 points. Win, and you get some. Lose, and you lose some. Disconnect and you lose some too.


Then there's Global Link, where you can upload your save file to Nintendo's B/W site to recieve DLC and use Dream World, a series of mini games you can play on your web browser to receive bonuses on your main game such as Pokémon with exclusive new abilities. These minigames are also the only way to grow berries in B/W.

B/W introduced 156 new Pokémon, bringing the total to 649.

You can always trade online or transfer them from and Gen IV games you have. Also, Most Pokémon games feature a post Elite 4 area (Spoiler: You fight the elite 4) where you can find Pokémon otherwise unavailable in the region. chances are there will be one this time round too. But really, Poké-GAF is one of the most generous sub-communities around so I'm some someone will be able to hook you up with whatever it is you're looking for.

Did they finally get rid of HMs?
Nope, they're still in, but there are only 6 of them this time. Plus, TMs are unlimited use now. Baby steps.

I don't think I can wait until spring! How import friendly are the games?
As long as you're not playing on a DSi, they're very import friendly. Pokémon games made to be accessible to children starting to learn how to read, so you should be able to make you way through the game with very little or even no understanding of japanese. You also expect the game to be covered by nearly all of the major pokemon fansites in detail along with a ton of "let's Play" videos on youtube and text guides on GameFAQs if you do happen to get stuck.

Which version should I get?
That depends on which version you like the look of or the Pokémon from more.

We still have HMs but if they've changed at all is unknown. You still have to teach your Pokemon moves like Cut and Surf to use them as usual. I just hope that HM moves start being unlearnable.
