i think it's mapping the depth info onto the vga feed and making a kind of 3D shell that it applies lighting and reflection and other stuff too.

eitherway, it looks like a 3D shape rather than a flat 2D shape (as you see in the Konami dancing game where the people look like cutouts).
It's more obvious during the block-punching minigame. One of the editors starts off not fully extending his arm, and not punching across his body, and Kinect could tell both. The "avatar" in that game is a full 3D representation of the player.

Would love for the thread title to be: "In Soviet Russia, controller is YOU!"

I'm surprised this is coming out so soon. I haven't seen many ads for it yet. Perhaps they're blanketing network TV (I watch almost exclusively cable channels). Still, I thought this was getting a huge marketing push? Are they saving most of that for the holiday rush?

I still don't get it. Kinect requires decent amounts of room, and the E3 featured lots of Asians, but they, well at least the Japanese, don't have lots of room. Am I right in thinking that they aren't going to promote the Kinect in Japan that much?

you don't need any of that to see that the games are controllable as indeed the people playing them say they are. however 'bad' the lag is, the games work.

Since we're piling clichés on top of each other, you could add that asians are smaller, hence they can play closer to the camera. Problem solved :D

(no seriously, I don't even understand this joke about asians at E3... there were all kinds of people demonstrating, from what I remember)

It's crazy that this IS the future of gaming. Didn't Nintendo say they didn't want to use this type of technology instead of Wii? I wonder if they will be regretting that.

Microsoft posts $16.2 billion in revenue for Q1 FY11
Quote:
Microsoft today announced record first-quarter revenue of $16.2 billion for the quarter ending September 30, which is 25 percent increase over the same period in 2009.

Net income came in at $5.4 billion which is an increase of 59 percent over 2009, with the Entertainment and Devices Division (includes Xbox 360) reporting revenue of $1.8 million for the quarter compared to $1.4 million the year prior.

During the quarter, Microsoft saw year-over-year growth across all business segments, with Xbox 360 consoles sales up 38 percent and outselling “every console in the US for each of the past four months“.

“This was an exceptional quarter, combining solid enterprise growth and continued strong consumer demand for Office 2010, Windows 7, and Xbox 360 consoles and games,” said Peter Klein, chief financial officer at Microsoft.

“Our ability to grow revenue while continuing to control costs allowed us to deliver another quarter of year-over-year margin expansion.”

A live analysis with shareholders will be broadcast at 5:30pm EST today, so we’ll be listening for anything you might be interested in.

Overall came away surprised at how well the majority of the games tracked the movement.
I had zero interset until I saw that video. Not that there was anything mind blowing but it does track much better than I thought.
Now that I want it I'm reminded I don't have a floor in my 100 year old house that won't shake the shit out of the camera in many of the games. =(

3DV (Not PrimeSense which is what Kinect is based off) pitched this technology to them after the Wii launched. Nintendo said it was cool but that A. It was too expensive. B. Too processor intensive. C. They had concerns about lag.

Microsoft at least solved 2 of those problems. Some lag is still present of course but I don't think it will effect sales of the device.

so they made $5.4 billion.

investing .5 billion back into marketing kinect is something that they can clearly afford to do. they don't even need to make that marketing budget back, because they can afford to completely write off the cost of it.

does kinect r+d come under the Entertainment and Devices area? cause if so they've already paid for the r+d of the device.

in other words, for anyone that doesn't get it, microsoft can afford for kinect to be a complete disaster and move no units at all.

think about that for a moment. the research has been paid for. the marketing is easily covered by their other income.

whether kinect is a success or not, i'm actually kind of glad that a company that can afford to take a risk like this has. sure, they can afford to fall on their face here, but i'd much rather then reinvest some of their billions into trying to make new stuff and really getting behind it than just putting it all in the bank.

Have they found a solution for those of us with 256MB Arcades? Since NXE takes up 128MB and I understand this requires something like 175MB. I'm sure as hell not interested in this yet, but I'm sure there are people out there in my same situation that also don't feel like paying for an overpriced HDD.

190 MB is apparently the requirement for kinect, so yeah, people with the 256 mb arcade will need more memory. they recommend in the sales info that you recommend the usb stick or a 60 gig starter pack, for what it's worth.

You forgot to add one part:

Quote:
Net income came in at $5.4 billion which is an increase of 59 percent over 2009, with the Entertainment and Devices Division (includes Xbox 360) reporting revenue of $1.8 million for the quarter compared to $1.4 million the year prior. Profit for the division was $382 million for the period, which is up 46 percent yoy.
These profits are mainly being generated coming from Windows 7 software to businesses. The entertainment division is tiny by comparison.

What plagerize says is correct, but MS isn't in business to be a charity. They want this division to be a monster someday and perhaps even replace their core business. While MS could eat all the Kinect losses in doing so the entertainment division will probably go under. They can't have that big of a loss anymore and have their shareholders be happy with a successor.

The huge female push with Ellen and Oprah is interesting (and smart). Soon we'll see if it pays off. I'm wondering if MS should just try to re-brand the Xbox division to Kinect. How many moms want to say, "Xbox on!" I can see them saying "Kinect on!", though. Kinect is a much more appealing word to a female than Xbox.

so we can just throw out generalisations like this without backing them up with anything?

the entertainment division made a profit. if kinect doesn't sell anything it'll still likely make a profit. no reason to take them under because MS as a whole thought it was worth the .5 billion to advertise Kinect.

entertainment won't have made that decision.

and you're forgetting that the r+d done on kinect is something that can and will be used in the PC sector.

no way this takes down the profitable entertainment division.
