Ouch if I am reading that right they are sitting on 17 million PSPs unsold to consumers. I am guessing they are stopping production or slowing it to a snails pace with PSP2 next year

THE WORDS! They'll drift away without the _!
So they managed to ship more PS3s than Microsoft shipped 360s.

Pretty impressive. Wonder how much of the difference is Japan though.

You're not reading it right. :p

The 17M figure is using their old counting method, the 50M is using the new one (which they started using April 1st).

I wonder what drove the software sales, I dont recall any big PS3 games in Q2. Perhaps one of the additions was a bigger share of Madden

Sony is selling a lot more TVs, cameras and PCs this year than last. Any reason why?

Really good PS3 software sales so far this year.
And yet they predict "about the same" as last year for the FY. Which makes no sense, because they are way up so far.

GT5 is still said to come out before the end of the year, if you were paying attention.

If GT5 hits this Christmas, they'll blow those numbers out of this world.

PS3 is just behind 360, impressive.

If they release GT5 this Christmas + a decent marketing campaign, they could overtake 360 really soon IMO.

The big invisible elephant in the room is Kinect though...
Should be interesting to see how it turns out

GT5 is a slow burner, and Sony knows it.

I doubt it'll do that much better than UC2 did in it's early months, but over the next two years it'll become their best selling game by far

If I'm not mistaken, this refers to the combined PS2 + PS3 + PSP software sales; i.e. the combined sales are expected to be the same as the combined sales of the three platforms last year (so PS3 making up for the declining PS2 and PSP software sales).

Oh yeah, forgot about Kinect.

Kinect succeeds (likely) = PS3 is doomed to 3rd place.

This'll be fun to watch :)

You have to add 17 mil to the total in the table to get the LTD sale figure which is 67 mil.

Me thinks.

I think Kinect will do quite well this holiday and then fizzle out within 6-8 months (just my guess). Should be a very interesting season indeed!

they predict 60 million unit sales more than 2009, on the other chart...

once this generation ends and the story is written, the historians will not be kind to Sony and the loss of its iron grip on the gaming industry.

the very notion that the words "Sony" and "3rd place" are even in the same sentence is baffling to me when I step out of the moment and look at the last 15 years of gaming. It's almost incomprehensible. Then again, I said the same about Nintendo. Before the N64 came out.

one thing this should reinforce

USA /= world as far as console sales goes. PS3 must be doing ok somewhere. or the channel is completely stuffed.

I wonder how PS3 sales will be by the time they pull out the $200 card, though I have a feeling Sony might leave it so long it won't make much of a difference.

Wanna bet?

EDIT: Actually, it just occurred to me, if it was coming out in the next quarter why didnt they announce it as part of the future guidance with their earnings?

I shook the Magic 8 ball 4 times and here is what it said:

● Don't count on it
● My sources say no
● Outlook not so good
● Very doubtful

<Between Xbox & PS3>

Xbox is winning in the US.
PS3 is winning in Japan.
In Europe it's too close to call.

Damn, less than 3 million now. Kinect could change all that, but still they closed the gap massively.
It's kind of funny to put this gen into perspective.

You can either look at it as Sony closing the gap, or you can look it at as how they are hitting their 5th year and still in 3rd place.

Well Sony themselves predicted to be in 3rd place:

Sony got hit by the 3rd generation curse...MS is next, but then again they didn't rule supreme over a generation, so maybe the curse won't hit them ;)

Wow, Sony has really made a strong comeback. The holiday is going to make things really interesting. US will no doubt be in favor of MS but Japan and EU with GT5 could sway things in favor to Sony.

it's obviously not too close to call since sony shipped about 0.7 million more units somewhere. And I doubt those were to other asian territories.

Places like Korea (for example) are not insignificant markets.

There are lots of territories throughout the world that we just get no numbers for whatsoever, and while the majority of them may individually represent tiny markets the combined effect is really too large to just ignore.

Yea that will be interesting to see. I think everyone knew that eventually the PS3 would overtake the 360 but Microsoft is positioning Kinect to be a monster success and system seller. I'm not so sure that I believe them though. It will definitely be exciting to see how it all unfolds.

PS3 unit sales 0.7m above X360 doesn't mean it has more retail sales this quarter.

Two different things, has several commercial aspects behind the number of consoles shipped to stores in a quarter.
