The Fall and Fall of GFWL (botched update has locked me out of every GFWL title) #1

so this is a redux from the marketplace thread, but i thought i'd fire up a new one just to celebrate the occasion.

so pt.1

-------

*** I CAN NO LONGER PLAY GFWL GAMES ONLINE ON MY COMPUTER ***

so i boot up street fighter 4, get the "update required" message, wait for the bar to gradually fill up. game closes, some distributable install flashes up, then nothing.

huh.

so i try it again, repeat the process. nothing. still huh.

try it with dirt 2, process is the same, results are the same. HUH.

try restarting my computer and opening dirt 2. same goes. HUH.

so i try opening the gfwl software directly, get this message:

and so i foolishli click "help" and engage in a merry chase around microsoft's hope vortex until i'm ultimately routed to check up local UK server issues and arrive at this page....

OOPS!

please, i'm pleading with you. for the love of all that is good on this earth, will someone end this vile pestilence once and for all.

---------------

at this point, i was informed that i had sign a license agreement on xbox.com for gfwl to y'know, work. something that was not mentioned anywhere at any point throughout the process. i did so, to no avail.

onward to pt. 2:

----------------

update:

i decided to try and download the gfwl client directly from microsoft, the install went fine until i was prompted that i'd need to download the latest sign in assistant. it sent me to a page, i downloaded that piece of software - attempted to install and got this message:

now, instead of being caught in an infinite update loop, all my gfwl games have simply given up and crash on launch, giving this error message or equivalent:

i don't know if i blame them.

sf4, dirt 2, dow2, resi 5. all are now too embarrassed with their affliction to even bother running. gfwl has long been irredeemable, but this level of incompetence is astounding even me. because their bullshit update software choked on its own bile, gfwl is locking me out from my own games.

-----------------

i don't know if i even want to recover these games anymore. sure i enjoy playing them, but leaving them dead seems to be the only way to deny myself being repeatedly jammed in the eye by the weeping, diseased totem of incompetence that is gfwl.

What surprises me the most isn't the weird errors but how many hoops you're expected to jump through. I mean its not just a "Steam is awesome" thing, are any other DD services like this?

I've used just about every DD service at one time and in no way were any of them even close to as clunky or buggy as GFWL.

Isn't today the big update? I was thinking about doing a quick session of F1, but if it's gonna destroy things, I'll just give a day (not that anything would be patched for weeks anyway).

I don't want to install sign-in assistant on my PC at this point in time so I can't test out my GFWL games to see if they work after updating, but I certainly hope this isn't a widespread issue.

I ran it a few weeks ago on Win 7 64bit to test out the MLAA function that my new AMD GPU came with, worked fine for me so does your problem occur under very specific circumstances or something?

When I update GFWL I get the message "windows live has failed to initialize" and it just doesn't run. Of course if I don't update I can't play online. The problem is an incompatibility between gfwl 1.0 the game was built with and the new gfwl 3.0. I found a workaround but it's kind of a pain in the ass and H2PC just isn't worth it. Of course there will never be a proper patch because MS is so eager to abandon support for their games.

But DRM game services are awesome and the way of the future and anyone who disagrees is a moron. Sadly here I am, a meager fool, playing games that don't require internet authentification. I only wish I could run into these sorts of problems.

Heh. Just tried this new "Games for Windows Marketplace" as they call the new GFWL client. It used over 1GB RAM (baaaad memory leak?) and then crashed. :lol

I sure hope Microsoft fixes this.

Halo 2 isn't 7 compatible. I had to use some special launcher to make it run.

Also GFWL sucks ass. Can't take any MS "return to PC glory" seriously so long as they insist on using that piece of shit.

It feels like the entire design was run through like 7 different layers of business managers instead of a team of guys who know what they're doing.

I updated and it appears to be working. *Phew* Only problem I really had was trying to click Yes on the update box. My screen was flashing like a drunk chick at Marti Gras. Had to alt-enter out of full screen to get it stable. Impressive coding though. Don't see my quad cores all maxing out very often. They basically stayed there the entire installation.

Had the exact same problem. Install the Windows messenger over windows live essentials and reboot. After that, everything went without errors.

Halo2 is compatible. GFWL v1 isn't. Probably the same will go with other older games like Shadowrun.

Why is that unacceptable? It doesn't have to be an online profile afaik.

No it doesn't require it, but of course everybody is online anyway so everything is monitored and logged. I just hate the way these corporations just have to get their fucking beaks in for no damn reason.

That and the fact that if/when the service shuts down in the future you won't be able to play those games again properly.

I've never liked GFWL in its current state and never once claimed that I did.

This thread and error has been passed onto the GFWL team at least, so at the very least some one should know of the problem. Can't give you any guarantees they'll fix it, mind. The ball's in their court.

Downloading and installing the patches outside of GFWL is usually the best option.

Last time I did this was in Bioshock 2 because downloading and/or patching from GFWL was taking ages. It wasn't at all transparent what the client was actually doing, and the progress bar just wasn't moving.

Stew only praises GFWL for it's potential and as a counterweight to Steam. He's always been quite negative about the platform, only the last few weeks has he been slightly more positive about it due to the overhaul we all expected more from.

Fair enough, I don't go round cataloging posts (...yet :p) that just came to mind.

Maybe I'm just bitter, I have exactly one GFWL game (Gears) and it's pretty fucking abysmal.
