The Fall and Fall of GFWL (botched update has locked me out of every GFWL title)
#1
so this is a redux from the marketplace thread, but i thought i'd fire up a new one just to celebrate the occasion.
so pt.1 ------- ![]() *** I CAN NO LONGER PLAY GFWL GAMES ONLINE ON MY COMPUTER *** ![]() so i boot up street fighter 4, get the "update required" message, wait for the bar to gradually fill up. game closes, some distributable install flashes up, then nothing. huh. so i try it again, repeat the process. nothing. still huh. try it with dirt 2, process is the same, results are the same. HUH. try restarting my computer and opening dirt 2. same goes. HUH. so i try opening the gfwl software directly, get this message: ![]() and so i foolishli click "help" and engage in a merry chase around microsoft's hope vortex until i'm ultimately routed to check up local UK server issues and arrive at this page.... ![]() OOPS! please, i'm pleading with you. for the love of all that is good on this earth, will someone end this vile pestilence once and for all. --------------- at this point, i was informed that i had sign a license agreement on xbox.com for gfwl to y'know, work. something that was not mentioned anywhere at any point throughout the process. i did so, to no avail. onward to pt. 2: ---------------- update: i decided to try and download the gfwl client directly from microsoft, the install went fine until i was prompted that i'd need to download the latest sign in assistant. it sent me to a page, i downloaded that piece of software - attempted to install and got this message: ![]() now, instead of being caught in an infinite update loop, all my gfwl games have simply given up and crash on launch, giving this error message or equivalent: ![]() i don't know if i blame them. sf4, dirt 2, dow2, resi 5. all are now too embarrassed with their affliction to even bother running. gfwl has long been irredeemable, but this level of incompetence is astounding even me. because their bullshit update software choked on its own bile, gfwl is locking me out from my own games. ----------------- i don't know if i even want to recover these games anymore. sure i enjoy playing them, but leaving them dead seems to be the only way to deny myself being repeatedly jammed in the eye by the weeping, diseased totem of incompetence that is gfwl.

I don't want to install sign-in assistant on my PC at this point in time so I can't test out my GFWL games to see if they work after updating, but I certainly hope this isn't a widespread issue.

I updated and it appears to be working. *Phew* Only problem I really had was trying to click Yes on the update box. My screen was flashing like a drunk chick at Marti Gras. Had to alt-enter out of full screen to get it stable. Impressive coding though. Don't see my quad cores all maxing out very often. They basically stayed there the entire installation.

I updated fine, but when I play a game, I get a games for windows live crash message.
And yet I still have access to the client and achievements from within the game. FFS MS, you can't even get things to crash right. :lol This has been one clusterfuck of an update. |

Downloading and installing the patches outside of GFWL is usually the best option.
Last time I did this was in Bioshock 2 because downloading and/or patching from GFWL was taking ages. It wasn't at all transparent what the client was actually doing, and the progress bar just wasn't moving. |
