Japanese Music (Pop, rock and all 'dat) |OT|

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() My mate Antiochus reminded me that it's about time for a new J-Pop thread. you can use this thread to talk about your favourite songs and of course for further recommendations. of course, J-Pop is more than funny little girls in pink bear suits jumping around while singing about endless love. especially thanks to singers like namie amuro and hikaru utada J-Pop in general matured a little bit. alright, i start with my first recommendation. it's meisa kuroki, goddamn: catchy songs and a nice looking woman. try this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Q_BKdt34nM (it's called Shock) of course we can talk about J-Rock as well. I bet there some Gackt fans around here. anyways, i hope there won't be too much generall trolling. let's have a good time, guys. feel free to post here! be part of something big!

I'm not really in to most music in general, but lately I've been loving Face of Fact from Kotoko.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVAob_vjdnY Live version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4FQd6QXw1s It has a certain evergy and an awesome bass as if it were from a video game. |

SOIL&"PIMP"SESSIONS is quite chilling as well. In terms of JPop/Rock, I currently prefer bands like Mr. Children. WEAVER/flumpool are OK as well, but their sound is repetitive. In response to the OP - I also know about Meisa Kuroki, catchy instrumentals, but her vocals aren't that great. |

B'z is probably my favorite band of all time. I'm actually surprised how relatively unknown (or not talked about that much) they are outside Japan given that they're the most successful band there (and I think I read, they're the 5th most successful band in the world, based on their strength there.)

Can't have a J-pop thread without SPEED! They're not this lip-synched, over-produced crap that's big now. They're the real deal, and they've been in the business for 15 years now.

Thank you Blaburn, for starting this thread where no one else wanted to. As this decade is literally 20 days away from ending and inaugurating a new one, I think it'll great if we post our top ten best J-music albums during this time. Any and all genres recommended, whatever striked your fancy and has stayed with you since. I'll make one shortly

In terms of j-pop i really like those artists / groups. Some of these are genuinely great, while some others i listen to for "fun" :lol

Someone said Utada sucks?
Hold my weave. Hold it. Taking my heels off, we about to have a problem. I had such a crush on her when I was younger. I used to love Japanese music. I don't listen to it as much, though. L'Arc~en~Ciel was my shit ... But that's J-Rock. Utada must come out of hiatus. I still have almost all of her stuff on my iPod. COLORS, Hikari, B&C, A False "I Love You", Heart Station...oh man I could go on and on. Thank you based Hikki... ANY LOVE FOR BENNIE K? I LOVE THEM. TOO BAD YUKI STOPPED SINGING... =( |

Lately I've been listening to a lot of JRock from Last Alliance
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76xBixRSpmk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPNNv5cP5ok Along with stuff from Asian Kung-fu Generation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dytvacnvCJY Orange Range: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuVyzi_IJJw As for Jpop, some of the stuff from Utada Hikaru isn't that bad http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KENWKPa2aGI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BuSVHTI8Y0 I also have that Michi Kiss Kiss song on my ipod lol, catchy tune: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2vJDBhspgI I don't really like any male JPop, but this one's decent: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inOJgHzlkSo Most of the japanese songs on my ipod are from anime OSTs though: Stuff from Sawano Hiroyuki (Check out the song BRAVE, couldn't find it on youtube). The Angel Beats OST (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ED5sbprQ8Gw) etc. |

Hell yeah for all the Utada Hikaru love, she's amazing. She's out of hiatus right now but she will take an indefinite break in 2011.
Her most recent single released last month is called Goodbye Happiness http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfpX8lkaSdk. She also had a concert, called WILD LIFE, around 1 or 2 weeks ago that was streamed on ustream.

I'm not the biggest J-Pop fan. I used to love the stuff, probably just because I went through a fairly embarrassing weeaboo stage as a youth, but now I can only stand a few pop artists (Utada Hikaru and Ayumi Hamasaki have some really great stuff). Angela Aki is probably my favorite J-Pop star currently, however.
Nowadays I'm more of fan of JRock/Rap/R&B/Techno and probably some other genres that are slipping my mind right now. I propose the threat title get changed to just "J-Music |OT|" so it's not as narrow. Anyway, here are some of my personal favorites. Rip Slyme Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap ![]() Some of my Favorite Tracks: Nettaiya Hot Chocolate Blue Be Bop Bennie K Genre: Pop/Hip-Hop/R&B ("Urban") ![]() Some of my Favorite Tracks: Sunrise Monochrome Joy Trip Boom Boom Satellites Genre: Rock/Electronica ![]() Some of my Favorite Tracks: Easy Action Back on my Feet Intergalactic Sambomaster Genre: Rock/Alternative ![]() Some of my Favorite Tracks: Seishun Kyousoukyoku (Apparently this song's from Naruto. I refused to ever watch that shit, so this is news to me.) Sekai wa Sore wo Ai to Yobun da ze (You may recognize this song as either the closing tune to "Densha Otoko," or as the final stage in "Ouendan 2") Utagoe yoo kore Angela Aki Genre: Pop (with amazing vocal and piano skills -- fuck yeah!) ![]() Some of my Favorite Tracks: This Love Today Again BONUS COVER SONGS: Faye Wong's "Eyes on Me" (from Final Fantasy VIII) Seal's "Kiss from a Rose" (from... Batman Forever, lol) Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" There's plenty more, but I'm not trying to flood the page. Maybe in another post, but I'm sure none of you like my taste in J-Music anyway. :lol |

Pleased to see Jihen mentioned, people should check out Shiina Ringo's solo stuff too. But no Polysics mention? Tsk tsk tsk.

I also love 9mm parabellum bullet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdGPv_JZ1WU Oh, and Lite are mindblowing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tc1yD9H7Rb8 And this song by Sakanaction was stuck in my head for a good 2 months: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vS6wzjpCvec Not all J-music is AKB48-like tripe, thankfully. |

Cool thread! I've never listened to much J-pop beyond Ayumi.
How broad is the definition of J-Pop? In the broadest sense it covers all mainstream muisc, no? (be it J-pop, j-rock, soul, etc.). When I hear the name j-pop, images of girl/boy groups and music from anime series, are what pops into my head, but it's obviously not only that. Would you say that a singer-songwrite like Shugo Tokumaru falls under the J-pop umbrella? The reason I'm asking is because I've considered making a Music from Japan that is not J-Pop Thread. |

Cool, I wanted to get back into Japanese music again. Can j-pop include hip-hop or rock? Or are those exclusive to other categorized Japanese music? I've been listening to M-flo a bit, as well as some Ikimono Gakari. Are there any good bands or acts out there (preferably guitar, or instrument focused) that anyone wants to recommend?
