I don't mind moderate hand shuffling as most of the time it just makes them look like they have ADHD. I think it's funny that most of the kids are just doing it because they think it's what the "pros" do. Excessive hand shuffling though is obnoxious as fuck. It's clearly done to be a distraction and to throw the opponent off their game, which makes me surprised that it isn't frowned upon by judges. If someone was sitting there making animal noises repeatedly like meows or bird chirps for 30 minutes straight non stop, I'd think a judge would come over and tell him to knock it off. But maybe there aren't any rules about disruptive behavior of that nature.

Far more annoying to me though is when players excessively shuffle my deck in an meaningless event. I was at a 8 person draft at some shithole comic shop we weren't even sure was sanctioned. With my first opponent, after placing my deck in front of him, he would shuffle my deck, then pile shuffle it, then shuffle some more, pile shuffle again, cut it, shuffle some more, and then pile shuffle a third time before giving it one last shuffle. He did this every single fucking time. I ended up stomping him too so the goddamn shuffling took longer than the matches. And just to rub it in like a dick, I never once cut his deck or shuffled it.
I remember I went to a legacy tourney right when I got back in, and I mean JUST got back in.
I was playing some cheap crazy elf action because it is what I had, green has always been my bread and butter and again it was all I had to work with. Whole deck could not have cost more than maybe $40.
Before the matches started I am sitting with some people I knew and we are bsing around and there is this smug assed fleshbag and his friends just putting everyone down, and he had a couple of lackey idiots with him. He was apparently a judge in the area and felt entitled or something.
So then he starts ragging on some of the decks people were playing because of course he was playing some storm mess full of duals and promos. Money all around.
First game I rolled him and he was sooo salty about it and just talking shit left and right about how it would never happen again blah blah stupid deck blah blah.
He shuffle cut my deck and I shuffled his.
Gave it the deepest shuffle that I could, full bridge with my eyes locked on him and he was sooo pissed.
So we are going through the game and I ended up shuffling it two more times and did the same thing each time and he went pale. Totally threw him off and he misplayed when he could have locked me up on turn six.
Never heard so much raging and bitching afterward.

It was never the "accepted way" but once upon a time they printed a starter playmat with the cards organized that way and messed up a generation of players.

It depends on the game for me, I guess. I don't really think about it. Sometimes my lands are above my cards, sometimes below, sometimes to the right, sometimes to the left... I don't know, it's just not that important to me.

People still do this? Last time i played at a local place was when Urzas Legacy was out (10+ years ago?) and that always annoyed the piss out of me.

I am excited to make my return to FNM in a couple of hours and hope i don't get too hooked back into MTG but i have been looking for a new hobby and i always loved playing MTG and MTGO was fun when i played it on and off for years but i am what some call a social butterfly i just love being around people and meeting people and being there live and holding the cards but if they do that excessive hand shuffling that shit will get old QUICK. I'll have to snag me some sleeves, dice and maybe a box or 2 while i am there.

I think layout is pretty important. I mean, it should make semantic sense. Creatures are out in front because they're going to attack your opponent, who are on the other side of the table, with their creatures out in front ready to block.

Equipment and Auras go above/under creatures because they're "attached".

Graveyard goes above library so both parties can see it easily.

I don't mind hand shuffling of any kind so long as they're not fan flicking their cards. That noise drives me nuts.

I find that people who play both Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic tend to set their lands in front of their creatures. I'm not really certain why.

Got a crazy setup off in a casual 4-way game last night.

I was playing my old (honestly pretty crappily constructed) Modular deck, and I managed to get out a Solarion and an Unwinding Clock at the same time. Needless to say, I got the thing up to over a 1 million/1 million by the time the game was over, and could of had it a hell of a lot higher if I didn't want to stop calculating the ridiculous power the thing had. Of course, as my deck has no way to get trample or flying onto anything, it was just a VERY big stick, but I did knock one of the guys out by hitting him for over a million damage.

Agreed on both counts. I absentmindedly shuffle my hand as I think, but with too many people it's used for copying "pros" and using up the clock. I dont get bothered by it, but it's an easy way to get a tell on the opponent.

Excessive shuffling is the one reason I ever hate playing in larger Legacy and Modern tournaments. Most people aren't too bad, but every so often you'll run into some asshole who insists on pile shuffling after every fucking fetch land and tutor. It's within their right (up to the 2 minute mark), but goddamn at some people.

When players rage at getting beaten by cheaper or "worse" decks it gives me incredible joy. I beat one of the top players in my state with my discount affinity deck against his foil gofyed out BUG deck and his rage and despair was delicious.

Cracked open the last booster box of Restored I'm going to buy and was pleased with the results. Notables include a Cavern, Entreat, Griselbrand, Temporal Mastery and a Bonfire of the Damned. Besides a foil of some black card, there wasn't one repeated rare in this box, which I thought was pretty interesting.

This set is so fun to draft, I anticipate picking up packs here or there to do sealeds with, but I definitely won't be buying another mass quantity of it. I'm satisfied with my pulls and the trades they'll allow me to make, currently.

Okay, mono green round... 2-3 forgetting. It's before the last four fights in DotP '09. Mono black good? Because I just stomped all over Jace with it with no cards unlocked for it since all I had to do was burn my discard cards on his hands and he couldn't get shit done. But I worry getting to that point for mono-green would be too slow.

Played an in-house draft Thursday night and went undefeated. Our box was weak all around, but I pulled a Cavern of Souls in the first pack, and Entreat the Angels the third pack! :D A friend pulled a Temporal Mastery and a Griselbrand but nothing else notable outta our box.

I ran a R/U/G deck but really, red was splashed. Nephalia Smuggler was an all-star for me. So many options mid to late game with him. It saves targeted creatures. It allows you to change Soulbond. It allows you to untap your big guy that swung the previous turn and use it as a blocker. Great card. Also, I love playing around Soulbond. It's an interesting mechanic to juggle with.

1xWingcrafter (loved it)
2xNephalia Smuggler (awesome mid-late game)
1xScrapskin Drake
2xGryff Vanguard (this and NSmuggler = card advantage)
1xMist Raven (this and NSmuggler = constant bouncing)
1xElgaud Shieldmate
1xNightshade Peddler (took out some big fatties with this guy)
1xWandering Wolf (this + Tormentor's Trident = going unblocked for awhile)
1xTrusted Forcemage
1xBorderland Ranger (nice fetchland)
1xFlowering Lumberknot (loved this card)
2xNettle Swine
1xPathbreaker Wurm (only bomb I guess)
1x Somberwald Vigilance (underrated)

1xCrippling Chill
1xAmass the Components
1xNatural End
1xAbundant Growth (nice mana fixer)
1xUncanny Speed
1xThunderous Wrath

1xTormentor's Trident

7xIsland
6xForest
2xMountain
1xCavern of Souls

Played my first local FNM in around 11 years and had a complete blast, everyone was super friendly and was incredibly patient during the draft and had lots of help and pointers and chatted with a bunch of people after.

I was actually surprised at how welcoming the community was there because when i played 11+ years ago people weren't so friendly and i will defiantly keep going back, i didn't do super amazing during the draft but i still had a ton of fun.

I am actually really excited to get back into MTG and it's partly due to the MTG threads here on GAF so thanks everyone!

Guess what, nobody cares that John Finkel won pro tour timbuktu in 1845, how about commentating on whats actually happening in the match. You know, the match that John Finkel isn't even PLAYING IN.

Zac Hill doesn't either though! He just spews a bunch of generalities about the environment, without actually saying anything meaningful about the games themselves, can't keep track of the action, and uses the same cliches to describe everything ("...does a lot of work"). He's a pleasant and intelligent guy, but he's not good at following the games themselves.

Reminds me of a variation of the turbo fog that I have been upgrading.
Except mine has a splash of green in it obviously

I want to watch the whole final 8. Is that what's happening? If so, link? If its just the final 2, I'll wait and catch the video.

Neat match so far. 2-2, now waiting for the final game.

If the miracle player wins and doesn't yell out "it's a miracle!", I will be disappointed.
