Skyrim: even more info (OPM)

The economy of the game is better developed than in Oblivion. If you destroy a city's means of income (for instance, their crops) they'll need to buy crops from another nearby city, and prices in the city will go up.
aka,

if owner==dead:
add "100" to already existing "55" price.

buy crops my ass.

Wow, not my sort of game at all but I admire the vision. I didn't even realise it was getting a console release.

Damn, these guys are good. That's almost as good as
Dynamic hand animations in GTA: SA = box hand with single finger that can bend to make single gang sign

Yes, games are programmed. So what? Its a nice little cause and effect.
I know that. but they claim that shopkeeper code is so impressive they actually go to nearest town, when I somehow feel how a simple addToCost adds to the illusion and they come up with a PR story...Like Radiant AI of Oblivion.

//This part opens when store has nothing from
if foodcapacity_skyrim_storageroom <= 1:
if CheckCrop_town == FALSE:
AI_pathfinding_walkTo("town.closest")
.....blablablablabalbal millions lines of epic town script

compared to

(Two lines of text)

Is it Dwarf Fortress cool or Oblivion cool?
PS. I am not a programmer, I just use to demonstrate my point.

LOL. The way things are today you should be more surprised because it's getting a PC release.

If this is indeed correct, then it can open up all sorts of other strategies. By having the NPC move to buy or start a caravan type trade system among towns, then it opens up the possibility of raiding said caravan.

So you could set up an ambush by destroying crops, forcing creation of caravan system, then raiding a weak caravan en route, rather than attacking in a dangerous and defended town.

Makes sense but I think the two line implmentation is what we will see unfortunately.

This guy is going to get paid somehow, someway. Probably already, as that's too professional for a YT-vid as is.

I question why they didn't turn this into a full-fledged MMO yet. Yes, they're working on other stuff, but I wonder how/why they didn't jump on this yet. Anyways, at this point, if they start it now, we won't see it for 5 years at least lol.

Todd Howard (lead designer of the the Elder Scrolls-series) has stated that he and his team will never make an Elder Scrolls MMO.

Parent company ZeniMax might be working on one, however.

Yeah, that's a real shame. They have a lot of ground work done (lore + locals + world) they'd just have to do the rest (lol make it sound like not a big deal).

I just hope for a rebuilding feature. So if a Dragon burns down a village it rebuilds in about a ingame week. Similar to how quest NPCs respawn after a certain time when they die in RDR. Would be a little pissed if I had another Oblivion moment when the governess died to a random bandit attack.

Guy used to make animation on Newgrounds as a hobby... he does professional animations for Playboy and BBC....his quality paid or unpaid has always been top notch

You think the shopkeeper will actually walk to the next town?

LOL

It'll just be an automatic price adjustment.

It's not a shame at all, thank god they are level headed and smart enough to NOT make one.

The towns are not gonna have to 'rebuild' probably. Because the dragon won't actually destroy shit.

I believe it. It's some quality work right there, not the usual eyesore nor ear bleeding quality of these "fan-fics".

So is it safe to say that we wont be seeing anything substantial for this game till E3 time?

Loved Oblivion, my only gripe was that all the dungeons were almost the same look-wise. Minimal variety. I just hope there's more verticality (is verticality not a word?) more style as far as the architecture is concerned.

I'm expecting Oblivion with a few refinements and hopefully a product whose 'streamlines' I can tolerate.

dont make it an mmo, that genre just comes with such lame static worlds, and inability to fuck anything up that they are just grindy treadmills, (remember the everquest design won the mmo war, not UOs).

now some co op or small scale servers (think like a fps server community) where you can just play with people or fuck shit up, id buy that.

If you could tolerate Oblivion I don't see how you couldn't tolerate this. If anything, the dungeon variety, a decent dialogue system (hopefuly) and an actualy interesting setting for a change already put it light-years ahead of the pathetic RPG Oblivion was.

I like how the fact that you can only block if you're holding a 2H sword or sword & board is considered an important factor to mention. I mean, I'm looking forward to this game ever since I stepped into Daggerfall and Morrowind years ago, but fuck me - devs have been putting "realistic" block in games for years now. God damn.

- 'Magnetism' is used to prevent friendly fire in combat, by slightly 'pulling' your attacks towards enemies

Wow, what a "feature." Thanks, Bethesda, for saving us stupid players from ourselves.

- Quest givers can give you more or less information about their quest depending on their disposition towards you.

Uh... I will assume this means certain people won't give you quests at all if they don't like you. They wouldn't send players out on quests without relevant info and call it a "feature," would they?

- The game apparently looks amazing in motion, with great environment effects such as the wind making the water swirl and making waves.

...so Bethesda got some new animators?

- Dragon encounters aren't scripted. If one comes across a town in its travels, it might decide to attack it without warning. This may or may not involve setting it ablaze. ;)

"Whew, gotta get this stuff to the trader's before this Feather spell wears off--oh. The trader stall is a pile of ash."

- The glorious return of the Dwemer ruins is once again confirmed.
- One of the cities in Skyrim will apparently be heavily inspired by the Dunmer (Dark Elves), and may even be a full-fledged Dunmer settlement.
- They're trying to go back to the "eccentricity" of Vvardenfell. Every Nord faction will have their own customs, colors, and so on.
- The economy of the game is better developed than in Oblivion. If you destroy a city's means of income (for instance, their crops) they'll need to buy crops from another nearby city, and prices in the city will go up.
[...]
- Not every NPC will have a complete set of dialogue like in Oblivion. It'll be more like in Fallout 3, where only the 'important' NPC's have anything substantial to say.

All of this is great news, especially the last one. That's maybe the best bit of news I've heard yet about Skyrim.

- Quest givers now give more detailed instructions, in a style that's apparently akin to Morrowind. They might even escort you to the road, to show you where to go.

Prediction: in the next game, you'll be able to ask NPCs to do quests for you!

...but seriously, most of this is welcome news. And of course, anything they screw up (inevitable, really) will be "fixed" by mods.

Too much info about little details and not enough screenshots that allows a gamer to judge whether its playable at launch or the mod community is going to have to fix the consolized graphics like they had to do for Oblivion.

- You can cut dialogue short by walking away from the NPC.
Revolution in gaming right there....Thats what I mean: too much useless info and not enough detail about how they are going to blow my mind with the graphics.

To dull the pain: Hot MILF

The French Official Playstation Magazine has some new information about Skyrim... Apparently there's some new screenshots too, but so far, I haven't been able to locate any scans. Anyways, here's the info, straight from Bethesda's own forums. Of course, lock if old.

- 'Magnetism' is used to prevent friendly fire in combat, by slightly 'pulling' your attacks towards enemies
- Some, apparently unique, enchanted weapons will have "concealed" effects. You won't know what those are until you try the weapon.
- You cannot block if you have a sword in one hand, and a spell in another. Only players wielding two-handed blades or sword and shield can use block.
- The Spell Shield effect returns.
- Taverns will play a large role in the game. You will be able to overhear people's conversations, start quests, acquire information, and much more.
- They mention breaking and entering to find out more about people, but I'm not sure as to what extent - "Because of the open world set up you can even progress by snooping around - following people, looking out for strange behaviour and even some light breaking and entering".
- Quest givers can give you more or less information about their quest depending on their disposition towards you.
-
One dungeon is called 'Bleak Falls Barrow', and it is inhabited by the Draugr (the undead Nord warriors we first met in Bloodmoon). As you proceed through the dungeon, you'll eventually encounter a 'ghostly dragon priest', and eventually the dungeon boss, a giant 'Frostbite Spider'. It is said the dungeon is 'terryfing'.
-
The quest to Bleak Falls Barrow is given to you by a shopkeeper called Lucan, whose priceless Draconic family heirloom (a golden claw) was stolen recently.
- Several new spell effects, including "Ice Trap" (only triggered when an enemy walks over it), "Circle of Protection" (push the enemies in your vicinity away), "Fury" (make enemies fight each other), and so on.
- One of the finishing moves involves "plunging your sword into your enemy's chest", coupled with gurgling death noises.
- The 'free-form' activities you can perform include cooking, woodcutting, mining and metalwork.
- A Dragon Shout that slows down time (a la Bullet Time) is mentioned.
- Some Dragon Shouts are found in dungeons.
- There's a city called Riverwood. It is described as 'A smattering of timber buildings, including a sawmill'.
- Radiant Story is in part inspired by the random encounters in Fallout 3.
- The game apparently looks amazing in motion, with great environment effects such as the wind making the water swirl and making waves.
- It is possible to raise all skills to 100 but not possible to get all perks.
-
The death of the King of Skyrim has sparked a civil war in the country.
- Dragon encounters aren't scripted. If one comes across a town in its travels, it might decide to attack it without warning. This may or may not involve setting it ablaze. ;) Oh noes my quest town is burned down will never happen
- It talks about the improvement of NPC's and Radiant AI.
- Every big settlement is unique. The city of Markarth Side, for example, is set into "dramatic stone cliffs, with buildings teetering on the end of sheer drops."
- Haarfingar is said to be home to the largest trading port in Skyrim.
- The game apparently includes 'meteorogical effects': clouds gathering around mountaintops, etcetera.
- Archers can 'hold their breath' while aiming. This consumes stamina, but gives the archer a better chance of hitting the enemy.
- A wounded dragon has a chance of crashing into the ground.
- You can cut dialogue short by walking away from the NPC.
- Dragon Shouts are assigned to the R3-button on the PS3 gamepad.
- Not every NPC will have a complete set of dialogue like in Oblivion. It'll be more like in Fallout 3, where only the 'important' NPC's have anything substantial to say.

An interview with Todd Howard in the same magazine gives us some more info (some of this may be badly translated, so don't immediately believe everything you see here).
- Quests can influence each other. Quest A may be changed for you because you completed Quest B beforehand.
- Quest givers now give more detailed instructions, in a style that's apparently akin to Morrowind. They might even escort you to the road, to show you where to go.
- The game has 120 unique dungeons, worked on by 8 designers.

Some non-magazine news:
- A week or so ago, Pete Hines remarked a trailer "may or may not be around a month away". A trailer at the GDC? It seems possible.
- A site redesign is coming soon as well, probably to coincide with the trailer reveal.

Lets start the "reality-vs-hype" scratching, I added

Wouldn't that be something.

That said, these are interpretations of translations of translations, so every little detail may not be correct. Stuff like "turning the trader stall into a pile of ash" doesn't seem very beneficial to gameplay, so I take stuff like that with a grain of salt.

In any case, I'm so freakin' hyped about this game. If Bethesda just gives me a sword and a world to explore, I'm more than happy. Everything else they add is just bonus awesomeness.

I am so excited to get Skyrim for PC. I was originally planning on getting it for my XBOX or PS3 since my laptop can't even play Oblivion on full settings. But no more! I just placed an order for new parts. I will be building my computer sometime this month...just in time to start practicing with Oblivion modding tools before starting Skyrim.

Edit: I just (like a couple hours ago) finished building my new computer. I ran Oblivion on it at full settings all across the board just to see how it would run... CPU maxed at 17%, getting a constant 60fps...I have never experienced Oblivion like this...I always had to play on the lowest settings, and even then it pushed my laptop to its limits and having occasional crashes...but not anymore. I am so totally ready for Skyrim on PC with this setup.
