Sounds like a cluster fuck to me. A free form RPG shooter, which bears almost no resemblance to the first game. I guess it could be good if they pull it off

I was initially disappointed that Prey 2 was going all CoD on us. However, this doesnt seem to be the case. It'll be interesting to see how all these different elements come together.

I still don't like the design of Killian. If we don't see him in the game, then it won't be an issue for me.

Sounds like the ultimate FPS there, IF they can pull it off.

I don't even understand why they're using the Prey IP - the game sounds completely different. Prey sold under a million, so putting a 2 after it can't be for marketing reasons.

It can still be set in the Prey universe, but named something else. I would even argue it can hurt the game sales.

I don't understand why people are assuming 1) Tommy won't be in the game, and 2) That it is only tangentially-related to the Prey universe by way of a plane you see in the original title.

If I was Human Head, and I wasn't absolutely fucking retarded, I would not let any important character, story arc, or universe detail fade; I would use them, and I would expand on them.
So far, nothing indicates they aren't doing this.

Oh, and, NOT calling it Prey 2 could definitely impact sales. I only care about this game right now because I liked Prey -- and I think a lot of these promises a hard as fuck to bring to fruition, so right now, I'm banking on more Prey. Not the ME/KZ/AC2-whatever comparisons.

Received the french magazine Joystick, and it pretty much says the same as Game Reactor, but there's more:

- Chris Rhinehart compares the side quests of the game to Red Dead Redemption (i.e: cold-blooded murder or bringing back alive the wanted guy) meaning that there's the core storyline but the way you settle the optional missions draws the character.

- Missions feature infiltration, shadowing, murder contract...

- Since you're a bounty hunter, one can ask you to kill a prey, but that prey could ask you to kill instead the one behind that contract, in return for money.

- James Sumwalt (creative director) says the size of the area is at least as big as Rome in AC:B.

- Finishing off a victim or killing his attackers will influence your reputation meter (Red Dead again).

During a mission, after asking a tip about his target to a hot female alien in a strip club, Killian grab a slope before jumping towards a structure.
The magazine says: "it wasn't scripted, it was live and smooth, and there's no glow/highlighting bumping in your face to tell you where you can hang from".

Also, they confirm Human Head is using an updated version of id Tech 4.

It's astonishing how little Prey 2 has to do with anything established in Prey 1, story-wise, stylistically, and gameplay-wise.

Why even call it Prey 2? It's not like the Prey IP holds a lot of weight with consumers...

I like the sound of the game, although I would prefer a more linear / story focused experience. I think it's definately a good sign they are going all out on singleplayer and not bothering with multi. This design practice has worked well for games in the past.

Main concern is that it's console lead. We've seen how awesome games can look when PC is the lead, especially with ID Tech, so this is not the best news... but fingers crossed they don't neglect the PC / PS3 and treat those platforms as an after thought.

Anyway, there is a good deal of potential for awesomness here so I shall remain optimistic.

this.

DISCLAIMER: not saying it doesn't sound like an awesome game concept, because it does. but what is Prey about this? nothing. and before someone says that it continues the story- that isn't enough to substantiate it as a sequel that deserves to be a direct sequel. i want to play this game but it's going to put a bad taste in my mouth if it feels nothing like a Prey game but keeps shoving it into my face that it's the sequel. (see: SH5)

example: mass effect 3 was instead announced as a platformer/puzzler. rated T. you play the role of a janitor that's gotta rid a space station of these evil booger-like alien life forms that are clogging up the production line. but there is more to these creatures than meets the eye... (intros katamari rolling them into a ball like concept). but since it takes place directly after the events of ME2 then it deserves to be a direct sequel- despite it's concept/gameplay being radically different. works as a cheap xbla/psn downloadable game of a different IP altogether, but not as a ME game.

As I mentioned in the other threads, this one sounds in line with the original design concepts for the old 1998 version of the game, where Talon Brave was stranged on a futuristic alien planet. They obviously took some creative liberties to make things interesting.

i dunno, it seemed like the design process evolved quickly into what the original (released) Prey is. not to mention it wasn't a bounty hunter type of scenario (it seemed) either. this whole "aliens are just like us" kinda thing that the sequel's premise implies just seems ridiculous in light of how things transpired in the first game. sure, they had arms and legs and guns etc. but now he's taking jobs for alien munnies and it's just sounding like a GTA on an alien planet. i just don't see how that substantiates it being cannon. *shrug*

Considering there has only been one game I don't think we have a real ground for what is 'canon' or not. :P I mean the Prey universe is basically our own, so they pretty much have carte blanche to do whatever they want with it. They can't exactly bring back the sphere, and I wouldn't want to see another one, so they have to go somewhere. As long as Tommy and the original events remain relevant to some degree I don't have a problem.

i guess what im trying to say is that the Prey 2 concept is basically saying "everything you thought defined the Prey property itself in fact did no such thing" and you can't just UNDEFINE what the franchise was about, even just one game in. Peggle 2 isn't going to be about matching cards with the same symbols on them like a mahjong game. it's going to be about shooting balls at pegs at the very least.

an example of a game that took a drastic departure but still kept it's core "defining feature" is Red Faction. the destructible environments were the star of the show. the second game disappointed and they turned the franchise into a 3rd person GTA style open world game, but kept the destruction elements in tact.

i'm not saying Prey 2 doesn't have the "Prey" elements in it, i'm saying that SO FAR i have yet to hear of anything that does. unless they're going to surprise us with a big E3 reveal and it seems like a Prey game, i won't believe it. i think it being tied story-wise to the first game is a good start, and like you said they shouldn't keep things too safe and borrow too heavily from the first game, but i personally feel they're taking way too many liberties, and not to mention cherry picking way too many core features of other high profile games. if it releases in the way i'm reading it, it could cause the franchise to never have it's own identity at all. "if it ain't broke..."

The difference between Prey 1 and Prey 2 is kind of like the difference between RE(1,2,3) and RE4. Which lead to one of the best games ever...

So I'm happy for them to use the name, as long as they produce a game as awesome as RE4.

The concept behind this game sounds so awesome, it's almost too good to be true. Like many have stated before, I don't understand why they won't just make a new IP out of this, however i'm loving what I'm hearing so far. If Human Head can pull this off, this could revolutionize the FPS genre.

It sure sounds awesome. I don't understand all the "it's nothing like Prey" comments. Who cares? Prey is a great title. You don't just throw that away. It also has some name recognition with gamers.

To me, the best hope for "new" IP the next few years is using existing brands to make new games. If Activision wants to make a 3rd person action game set in space that unfolds nothing like a CoD game, who care if they call it Call of Duty?

And although they'll be fewer in number and have "different looks," there will, thankfully, be "vag portals."

lol one more, Should've written "vagina portals" from the start.

btw, for shame PC Gamer, you'd think such a big magazine would try and get the magazine themselves or at least credit GAF (the write-up is the exact same info in the OP and direct quotes).

Yeah I really don't get it. I mean if you had the rights to Prey 2 wouldn't you make Prey 2 and then this other game?

Besides, we've seen what the console hardware can do by now. Any time a game tries to do too much it shows. Brink and Deus Ex are giving us more open world shooters but the actual shooting component doesn't look all that meaty in both games.

For those wondering why it has nothing to do with Prey 1's story, in Joystick magazine, the developer says that they think have done what they wanted to do with the first Prey. And since in the first game you were the prey, they wanted to mark the occasion by making the player being the one who track the preys.

Personally, I don't care how they call it, just make it as great as it sounds. It's like BioShock Infinite, they could've call it BioShock 3 I wouldn't care because it's set in the same universe, just a different story/place and gameplay looks way better.

I also forgot to mention that in addition to strip club, there will be casinos. You will be able to take some decisions, in the same mission when Killian asks to a bodyguard for his target location, he answers with blackmail asking 2 000, the developer playing the game chose to push him to make him fall into the void.
