You have to wonder sometimes if NCL really gives a sh!t. They've made an absolute fortune on Wii. Judging by the pricepoint Nintendo has set on 3DS hardware and software, handhelds have now become Nintendo's premium product simply because that's where the Japanese market had migrated to with the DS and PSP.

Even if DQX moves 1 million consoles, it won't change the fact that Wii will be the lowest selling lead console in Japan in at least 25 years. At this point 15M would be a good finish. Crazy how the console was way ahead of the PS2 initially, and will now fall at least 35% behind.

That said, the install base is already high enough to support a 3-4M selling game, so DQX should be fine, even if it doesn't set franchise sales records.

Surely MS can afford to ditch Japan next gen.

There is no way it's worth bothering with Japan again next time around. I mean seriously, they're better off putting more marketing money and consoles into territories where they stand a chance of selling some.

They're making ground in Europe and given the strong performance in the UK, and making SLIGHT ground in countries like France/Italy etc, surely you'd think they should push harder in Europe and other PAL countries as opposed to literally pissing money down the toilet in Japan.

They should hand the Japanese release over to Sega to brand and sell, or someone competent even, but I've been saying that for the last two generations.

Another explanation is that the average Wii owner might be primarily interested in Nintendo intellectual properties. 19 out of the top 20 selling games for the Wii are 1st party titles. When comparing the sales, it's understandable why developers would choose to develop for the other systems instead.

19 out of the top 20 selling games for the Wii are 1st party titles.

If you let PS3 and 360 games in on the chart as well, 17 of 20 are still Wii first party titles. (Only FFXII and MGS4 qualify.)

Nintendo is by far the biggest publisher on the market, not just on their systems but overall as well.
