I think i read/heard somewhere that they changed or mistranslated some of the story....

It's been so long since i played it that i don't remember much about it.

Silent Bomber was incredible. It has shmup style gameplay combined with character driven action adventures and its own unique explosive mechanics. We really need a sequel.

A survival-horror with psychic powers instead of guns and knifes. Like most PS1 games it hasn't aged well, but it's ripe in atmosphere and the hotel level is still a classic.

Thrasher skate and destroy is so good, to this day.

Came in to post IQ, which like a lot of you I played the crap out of in demos. So much fun. One of the only good 3d puzzle games.

Thanks gaf, for giving me a list of games I need to buy for psx.

Great thread, stuff I never knew about but am interested in:

Hoshigami: Ruining Blue Earth
Philosoma
Rapid Reload
Psychic Force 2
Project: Horned Owl
koudelka

Not sure if it's well known but the only thing I can think to add might be Thunder Force V

Agreed on all that.

Unfortunately Tomba is quite text heavy and some of the hints in the text are subtle. So, unless you're fluent Japanese, you really have to play the USA/Euro version. great game though.

I'm a big Hanafuda collector, I've managed to amass most if the PSX and DC games that were made. They're all Japanese.

My favourite, because it plays a tight game and is customisable in terms of rules:

It most certainly fucking is. Also, proof that licensed soundtracks don't suck.

There's been good games after this one, but they've never come close to topping it, or even equalling it.

Holy crap the framerate is bad. I must've never noticed before.

I'm personally more fond of NFS3:HP and Porsche Unleashed though, but even with the reboot of Hot Pursuit, the NFS games have failed to recapture what made those original games so great for me.

The Divide- Enemies Within- pretty much a 3D homage to Super Metroid. The atmosphere, level design, ambient music, even that elevator... not brilliant but an interesting little gem.

Brahma Force- Assault on Beltlogger 9- awesome first-person adventure game. It's got tons of upgrades, secrets, platforming, cool atmosphere, and nice level design that gives you freedom to explore and doesn't feel like a series of mazelike samey-halls like most games from that era. Lots of use of 3D space.
Oh wow, The Divide - Enemies Within... I remember reading about that game ages ago (especially how it was a 3D-ish Metroid), and was interested, but forgot the name. Also cool you namedropped Brahma Force.

One thing that was fun about the PS1 is that genres, especially those in the 3D space, weren't really set in stone yet, and nobody really had much to go by in terms of building 3D games, so you have a lot of extremely flawed, yet interesting, takes on 3D games. Of course, most of these weren't very good and thus have been lost to the sands of time, with very few people remembering them.

Here's some picks:

DCharlie mentioned some of these, that man has some class taste. This one is one of my favorite games, and if you've played it it's easy to see why:

Anybody play this game? Always wanted to know how it was:

More of the same, really with Tomba-like 2.5D platforms.

The DS version contains both I think. The PSP version is buggy.

I'd dare say that Digimon World 4 is better, sword-wielding Digimon and all.

From what little I've played of this I can't comment on what you said, but I do recall it having a good soundtrack :)

As for the first Digimon World, I played a fair bit, but got annoyed how the Digimon dies after awhile. I should give it another try.

Man this thread is awesome.

Most of these aren't really obscure, but I haven't seen all of them posted yet so here goes:

Total Drivin: I loved the shit out of this game. Seriously awesome racer

Rapid Racer (Turbo Prop Racing in the US): Sony's answer to Wave Race, lol. Great game.

Porsche Challenge: A racer with a single car, yet still awesome.

Reloaded: Already saw this posted but I had way to much fun with this shitty game to not post it again. Awesome coop.

Apocalypse: Surprised no one posted this yet. Made by Neversoft and amazing.

Die Hard Trilogy: In hind sight a terrible game except for the light gun part. Still enjoyed it back then

Dynasty Warriors: Fighting game ala Tekken rather than the ones we got on PS2. Awesome for its time.

Auto Destruct: My favoite line from a game ever: "What can I say, mission failed!"

Spider Man: Cool game

Pandemonium 2: lol @ everyone posting #1 but no one posted #2. Why because Nikki was sexy in this one? I still remember staring at the magazine ads for this game, lol.

Pitfall 3D: As aweful as the Atari ones. But still bought and played it.

Adidas Power Soccer 97: I must have played the demo for 2 years before I finally borrowed the full version from a friend. Amazing game

Cool Boarders 3: First GOOD Cool Boarders and my favorite snowboarding game ever.

Excalibur 2555 AD: Really strange game.

ISS Pro 98: My favorite soccer game EVER.

Got a few more. Let's see if any of these jog anyone's memory.

Ok, not an outstanding rpg, but I actually did like it back in the day. Mine came with a demo for Jade Cocoon.

Not sure how many people remember this and/or it's predecessor. Pretty neat light gun games.

Another light gun game, this time a port of the arcade "classic." Well, it was a classic to me as I always played it in the local bowling alley all the time. Pretty damn faithful port.

Now I know a lot of people know of Descent, just not sure how many knew it was a PS1 game as opposed to the PC. But I loved it. Played the ever living crap out of Descent. And you know this was an early PS1 game because it didn't even support memory cards (iirc), instead it opted for a password system. Weird, but I still loved the gameplay. Disorienting as hell, but it was like Doom in a spaceship. Awesomeness.
