The Adventures of Shuggy - Steam/XBLA, Puzzle-Plat, $8, like Winterbottom or Braid
#1
![]() The Adventures of Shuggy came out on XBLA today. $10. 110 single player levels. Separate set of levels for co-op (local or multi). Does it look great? Well, no, not really. It's kind of cute, especially the story sections. But it's kind of lo-fi, it's bordered fullscreen, and it basically feels like it was made by just a few people. If you can get past that, it's quite fun. Plot: Shuggy inherits a haunted mansion, it fucks with him, he needs to collect gems to get keys to open doors to stop the mansion from fucking with him. Some level types: ![]() Every 15 seconds, a new Shuggy ghost is spawned and he retraces the path you've taken. If you touch him, you die. Progress through the level by taking advantage of this mechanic to hold open switch-activated doors. ![]() Switch between multiple live Shuggys (who do not die if they touch each other) in order to progress through the level. This also happens to be a boss fight. The boss fights are neat. The first one involves using ghost Shuggys to vent steam to cure a haunted boiler which is spewing fireballs at you. ![]() Wind Shuggy around a series of gears to get through the level ![]() Regular platforming (in this level you are actually being chased by saws if I remember correctly) ![]() Stand on this platform that moves around the floating spikes, wait until the platform gets to the top, hop off, get gems. ![]() A chunk of the level rotates on a timer, navigate through it. ![]() All your Shuggys are about to be hit by wasps, switch between them and move them out of harms way VERY QUICKLY, then send one to get the gems. Other level types: - You can rotate the level but can't move - You can rotate the level and can move - An AI controlled (and intelligent) computer partner character and you work through a level holding doors open for one another. - Run into goo to knock it into the air. If it hits a moving platform it sticks. Wherever it ends up, it will slowly move along the floor or up the wall. Get the goo to touch cages filled with gems and the gems are yours. This is kind of harder to describe than it is to play. GAF Testimonials: - xbhaskarx bought it but he has literally bought every XBLA game I've ever played so his opinion doesn't really matter. - @PepsimanVsJoe says: "Yeah Adventures of Shuggy is really good. Usually I hate puzzle-platformers but something about this game is hitting the right spots." - Foliorum Viridum says "Will try demo." Metacritic: - No one reviewed it because no one gives a shit about cute little low budget games when there are multi-million dollar 15-years-in-the-making flops to pretend to be outraged about! Other features: - Published by Valcon, who you owe for publishing Raiden Fighters Aces in North America. - Demo includes 5 or 6 levels from different types, but I assure you the level design gets better - The game is sort of tough at points (harder than Winterbottom, at least), but achievements are not very tough beyond finishing the game so if you like those, check this out. - Offline and online co-op. - UNLOCKABLE GAMERPICS!!!!! OMG! - Like five or six different environments! - 110 levels in total! - You die in one hit! - Gain hipster points with your friends, because I'm #30 on the leaderboards after 30 minutes of gameplay so clearly no one is going to buy this and you'll be so underground if you do - No it isn't coming out on PSN. No, honestly, it isn't coming out on PSN. No, that's not code for "it's coming out on PSN, you just need to wait a few months". No, no one in this thread cares that you're disappointed it isn't coming to PSN. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Check this game out

Game is fun and feels like a steal at $10 since there's a lot to do. Great title during the calm before the XBLA storm ala Summer of Arcade and all the tons of other good titles coming out on it.
Granted I might be bias since I love both Braid and Winterbottom.. |

I tried the trial last night very briefly...
I like the castle feel of the environment, the character is cute enough and platforming mechanics felt good. It feels very much like an indie game (which it is) and buying it should give you Feel Good points because the money will go to some indie publishing dev and possibly get more indie games approved for XBLA. I'm kind of tired of the time-rewind mechanic, and because of that I didn't make it all the way through Winterbottom yet but if you love those sort of puzzles this is probably more varied than Winterbottom was (Winterbottom and Braid are almost 100% of that sort of puzzle, this one has different mechanics as well). |

Yes this game is really good.
The time-based stages get really intense as there can be four or more clones of yourself running around and you have to pay attention to where they're going and leave just enough space for your current self to get by. Then you go back and do it again and again until you top the leaderboards. I should have a review written up by this weekend. |

played the trial. pretty cool and the pictures of the levels and saying the level design gets better in the op have me sold.
i liked the character design and the story presentation at the start, don't have a problem with the presentation either. the puzzle and design ideas in there feel pretty similar to that in other games i've played so i was worried that it'd all feel too well worn, but stuffing lots of different types of level together one after each other to give it variety made me not care; i also love short bitesized levels in games and the level design execution was solid in the trial. controls felt smooth and all but i didn't feel like the jumping mechanic quite gave me the control i wanted for some of the platforming bits in there, hopefully i get to grips with them better in the full game. also hope there's more and better music, the one i think track that played in the trial was this tacky ghost themed fairground ride type number that got on my nerves. |

Yo!
Bumping this thread to say I've beat the game. There appear to be 116 single player levels (I have 114 finished and 2 left scattered around the various quadrants) and apparently the co-op mode is 32 levels. Haven't got a chance to try co-op yet. I actually really liked the various bosses and some of the later mechanics were very fun. Sample level types from late game: - Moonjump; Shuggy can jump super high and flutter to break his fall - Fly; Shuggy can repeatedly jump mid-air to fly. - Huge and Tiny; levels include potions to make you super huge or super tiny or both. There are three level-specific challenges mapped to achievements which are pretty fun. I've done two of them, but this third one is killer hard. Looking forward to polishing the last two levels I have unbeaten and then diving into the co-op mode. Edit: Beat the last level-specific challenge and the last two levels. 116/116 levels complete. #20 on the leaderboards (PepsimanVsJoe is above me), but the way the leaderboards work is a little weird. It's ranked by time, lowest time at the top, and any level you don't have completed is timed at 30 minutes. So someone who has significantly better times than me but one level incomplete will be below me on the leaderboards.

I finally got this last night - I honestly built up an impression that it would be mostly time based puzzles but I'm so glad to see that it's a wide mix of things. I cleared the "Dungeon" in one sitting, it was never impossible, the one I got kind of stuck on actually made me use my brain (the one with a water spout and needing to 'run faster than spiky')
I thought I was missing something in the Dungeon because I figured some boss door would open up, instead I go to the second world the Boiler right? The music in the Boiler is just awesome and the backgrounds are better with the giant monster staring at you, I almost think they should have made that the first world instead. Hey if you few Shuggy players want to join up in forces PM me your gamertag...I tried to add "PepsimanVsJoe" but it was bouncing. I might have a full friends list but I will kick off some people |

CAG comes through. One of the admins wrote a review that I saw on the front page.
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/blog.php?b=21822 Mention of other games in this style (time/rotate) in the comments including Time Slip, Jumpman, Bomb's Way, Lazy Raiders, etc. |

Stump I beat your score on one of the tougher boiler levels by .002 seconds!
I was just about to lose my mind on one of the last time travel levels in the boiler...the one where you have to "have a good memory"...died like 4 or 5 times on my way back to the final gems...grrr...the other one that caught me up was the platform that keeps doing figure 8s while you have to jump and avoid spikes...I thought I must be missing something but it just takes a long time (1 min 30 secs feels like a long time anyway) Considering I'm already ranked like #600 and I haven't even beat the boiler yet I'm pretty depressed about this game's sales. That said, it's priced 10x of most XBLIG games. |

Just finished the 36 co-op levels tonight. They're a pretty quick snack. Girlfriend was my co-op partner; she doesn't do well with frustration gaming (we're talking "Fable 2 is kinda hard" level not good with frustration gaming) but managed to make it all the way through like a trooper. She liked the teleporter and ninja rope levels, but felt anxious about the time travel levels and hated the mosquitos on account of their random flight paths. So if you're on the edge and looking for something to kill an hour or two with a friend on, again, the game comes highly recommended.
One other note; there's a competitive multiplayer mode which seems to be a variant of the board game Hex. If you're a go/othello/six/chess/checkers fan, this bonus mode that has nothing to do with the rest of the game and has no bearing on achievements might be something worth getting the game for. #64/65 on co-op leaderboards, #51 or so on single player leaderboards. 200/200. :) |

A shame, as I really like the game, though I haven't played much beyond the first five screens. Should sell much better given the quality and variety of the game's content, but I think a lot of it is really is down to the name. Shuggy? Who or what is that? Sounds like a stagename for a flamboyant rocker from the late 60s or early 70s. Guess I'll put this back in the queue after I finish Bastion (hopefully before From Dust hits this coming week).
