So I watched Audition again cuz it was on Netflix and I hate myself. Obligatory: "kiri kiri kiri kiri kiri..."

It's not the needles that get me so much as the foot-sawing. Or, rather, the horrible enjoyment she gets out of it. She looks so happy, like a kid in a candy store. Ugh.

I've only read the book, which was sufficiently troubling for me to feel no strong inclination to see the film.

Haha, yes, troubling is a word for it. Happiness of the Katakuris, by the same director, is odd but legitimately feel-good (really!) and worth a watch though.

I also watched Sheitan and Head-On. The former was like this bizarre wacky French comedy version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, except not actually funny, featuring Vincent Cassel as an insane French hillbilly. Not really what you'd typically picture him as, I'd say, but interesting casting against type. Anywho, I thought it was pretty bad throughout, with entirely too much of the stupid teenagers necking and not nearly enough insane hillbilly Cassel.

The latter film I did not care for either. It's a collection of scenes following the lives of two attractive, selfish, and self-destructive characters; it doesn't quite flow or find a cohesive purpose and I gather that that was probably intentional, but the extreme lack of focus and the despicable leads meant I never cared much for these people or the ludicrous things that happened to them. It's also one of those films that feels too long, like it's struggling to fill out two hours just because that's Standard Movie Length and ends up losing what energy it had in the process.

yay new thread, that wall of fame is very nicely done.

saw ferris bueller's day off on tv the other day. kinda hard to enjoy the supposed fantasy of the day off when you find both the character of ferris and the portrayal by broderick so smug and obnoxious. i mean sure you can present a detestable lead but the film was so in love with its lead characters personality that it wasn't entertaining to watch. i didn't find it that funny either with the teacher scenes coming off as very stupid. guess my taste is just not suited to john hughes stuff as i thought the breakfast club was rubbish too.

Just rewatched Hook with some friends. The lost boys stuff was kind of duller than I remember, but the pirates were still amazingly amusing.

This scene still seems like it's in the wrong movie. As does the musical scene.

That's too bad. Most people (including me) feel Head-On aka Gegen die Wand is one of the best German films ever made. I think it's one of the top 5 movies I've seen in the romance genre.

It's a brutal, realistic, and deep exploration of the nature of love and sacrifice that takes place between two people - one without hope and one without restraint. The way their relationship matures and changes them both into the people they either never wanted to be or never thought they could be again is indeed a slow process, but I wouldn't take much out of the movie if I could.

I know you probably won't ever rewatch it, but if you do let me know what you think.

Also, Sibel Kekilli (the female lead) did a bunch of hardcore porn before she was an actress. Just a fun little fact...

Finally watched Man on Wire. Well deserved acclaim for this documentary. Really good study of a subject in Petit (who I knew nothing about). Surely a crazy individual but maybe the best type of crazy.

Love In A Puff (HK 2010)
Enjoyed it very much since it was very grounded in reality, looks at the first week of a new relationship. Also, I enjoyed all the smoking in this movie! Rarely do you see a movie focus on the social aspects of cigarettes.

Probably not, but sure. :p I'm not one for romance generally as a genre, as I often find the relationships portrayed unconvincing and conducive to self-pity a lot of the time. So there's that. I've heard good things about Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (another German-language romance) so I do want to try that out sometime.

Anyways, I'll be out and about so I'll stop spamming the thread now, but I watched Delicatessen and Tenebrae (dat soundtrack!) today too. In my defense, it was my day off and it was 102 degrees F outside...

Saw a few horror flicks:

Blood Creek (Town Creek)

Pretty decent, I guess. Likeable leads and some good tension even though it's not really scary. It's also my first exposure to Henry Cavill's full acting debut and damn, he has a magnificent screen presence. Can't wait to see him in "Immortals" and "Superman".

The Shrine

Pretty good as well for a small horror flick. On a surface it looks like a cross between "Saw" and "The Exorcist". There is even a statue in the forest that looks similar to Pazuzu, the demon from "The Exorcist". The lead character is pretty likeable and the film offers a nice twist on the usual horror movie survivor/victim convention.

Watched Transformers 3.

It was an alright action movie, but I swear an hour should be cut here and there. So much filler and it brings the movie to a stand still. Just tiny scenes that have no impact on the story. Bay should also stop with the potty humor.

Just saw the original Halloween for the first time, as part of my John Carpenter filmography run. Good to see the roots of so many horror cliches. What stand out the most is how relatively little violence there is. Outside of the first intro killing, there's an hour long build up before anything happens, and that first one is drawn out very long, building up. There's a discipline to the pacing that reminded me of Alien, which also builds for an hour before any action kicks in.

Some stuff frustrates, like the constant way Laurie relaxes after obviously NOT killing The Shape. (No, a knitting needle poke probably didn't do it.) But entertaining and very well crafted otherwise.

Nothing amazing but I was surprised at the bad reviews and impressions, I thought it was a pretty cool flick. Dumb and loud, the way an alien invasion movie should be, dammit.

Just caught Sleepwalkers (1992) on cable, for no other reason than because my favorite part of Twin Peaks (Mädchen Amick) was in it. I never read the Stephen King book it was based on, but I'm tempted to now just to get the bad taste of the movie out of my mouth. Terrible special effects (even for '92), bad acting, and an incredibly weak script all combine to make this a thoroughly unpleasant watch. Not even my fair Mädchen could save this wreck. We are given hints of an interesting movie when we notice that cats can sense the sleepwalkers, and are shown glimpses of the sleewalkers' supernatural physical abilities. Unfortunately these fleeting tidbits are coupled with no information on the sleepwalkers, no greater story than "They move from town to town to feed on people", and only two sleepwalkers for the entire movie. Which wouldn't be a problem if there were interesting characters for them to interact with or something else going on besides waiting to see how the main (read: only) plot unfolds. The town is just completely devoid of interesting people (save the Sheriff), and nothing even happens to them. I have to imagine the book had some hook or element in the story that made it interesting, but it seems to have been completely excised in the transition to the screen. The lame attempts at humor fall flat, King's cameo is bad even for him, and ultimately it ends up as a C-Movie at best. Shame, because Mädchen was as lovely as ever.

It has an exciting build up but it didn't seem like much thought was put into the monster or the conclusion. I really liked the "Spielberg" portions of the movie.

Barton Fink - 2/5
Hard to rate this one. Would of rated it lower but it was well made - the atmosphere and acting was great. I felt like I was missing something so I read a lot about the movie and it seems like most of the symbolism was to just tease the audience or just to allude to certain themes because of how it felt instead offering any meaningful insight or commentary. Maybe I'll watch it again when I'm not so tired.
