Lynch's filmography is fairly varied. Compare The Straight Story to something like Eraserhead, for example.

Eraserhead is straightforward if you stay on top of imagery. Elephant Man or The Straight Story are the 'easiest' to start with but I'd recommend jumping in and going back to them. They're better that way.

Caught Woman in Black tonight. Outside of Our Idiot Brother, it's the 2nd script I've done coverage on that's made theatrical (gave both positive considers but they were rejected by my higher-ups). Rampart is the third, releasing soon.

Changed a bit from the script, more focus put on the house than on the small town. The scares got pretty redundant after the initial flourish but it has builds a good atmosphere before it lets down in the finale. Still, it was a bit refreshing considering the barfy mainstream horror these days. Nice sense of place too.

The big marsh scene is stark stuff.

I think I was introduced to Lynch through Twin Peaks. After that Eraserhead and Blue Velvet.

last night:
20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (1954) - Great cast, some fine visuals but overall not very memorable. 6/10
Heathers - Your not so typical 80s highschool flick. Felt really fresh and original in the first half, got kinda old in the second. I liked the dark humor and the twist of the story. 6.5/10

The Iron Lady
Why oh why did they have to show Thatcher's life after her tenure as Prime Minister? Those segments annoyed the living hell out of me, thanks in large part to Jim Broadbent's terrible acting. And Meryl was bit of a pain as well during those scenes, but the scenes of her in Parliament and taking charge as PM were great.

Damn, that was really good. I love a good biopic. I think Dicaprio acted this one wonderfully. I actually felt his characters irritations in many scenes. Solid cast and story.

A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas - The worst one yet but was still enjoyable I guess. Not as humorous.

The Breakfast Club - Finally saw this. Still like Ferris Bueller and others better.

I think Derek stuck in the pod on stage is my absolute favourite moment of the film - the way he struggles to get out, while still playing bass, and then he finally manages it just as the other guys get back in their pods, fucking priceless.

Also, "I've told them a hundred times, put Spinal Tap first and Puppet Show last!"

I saw Chronicle. It was surprisingly good. The trailers made it look a little dumb, but I found it rather engrossing. I also saw The Woman in Black. This was less successful. Some of the art direction is nice. It sets the perfect mood. The house itself looked very nice, but it felt really small. There were parts where the characters just seemed to go back and forth between the same rooms like no other parts of the house exist.

I also saw Alien 3 the other day. I saw the original version not the special edition with the bull. It's not as bad as people make it out to be. I like the characters that I can identify like the doctor and the black religious guy with the glasses. I really do hate that they made practically every single person bald because I can't tell most of them apart.

There was no tension, nothing! I didn't care for anything that happened.

They are my favorite WKW films, but I never thought they were that comparable. Chungking Express is lightweight in many respects but captures those parts of the city very well and does say something about 90s HK. For me if does represent a time and age when i lived there and the ending alway put me in a good mood, even if i follow up with Fallen Angel right away.

One of my favorite movies, even if James Taylor did a horrible job acting in it. I'll cut him slack since he was a heroin addict at the time. The girl isn't much better, but I love Warren Oates and Dennis Wilson does a good job. I consider it to have the best ending shot of any movie ever.

Kill List - Well, I liked this movie, but didn't love it. It dragged somewhat during parts, but once the violence started it was fairly gripping. End spoilers/plot stuff: The way I understood the movie is that this cult, a very scary fucking cult, wants to recruit Jay in the most foul way possible. The ending was like The Last Exorcism crossed with A Serbian Film, but was better than those by a country mile. About the only thing I didn't understand, and maybe it wasn't explained at all, was why the cult singled him out in the first place? The only thing I could come up with, based on the one pervert "thanking" him for killing him and obviously knowing who he was already, is that they somehow learned of him through the grapevine and, knowing how much a ruthless bastard he is, wanted to recruit him. "The Hunchback" title flashing on the screen made my skin crawl off my body as soon as I realized what it really was. A refreshing movie overall. 7/10

Driver - After all the hype, I finally settled down to watch this, and I wasn't disappointed. I knew nothing going in, so the violence was indeed shocking. I loved loved loved the soundtrack! Some of the movie was slow, on purpose I should think, like the Driver and his gal staring at each other way longer than other movies usually have scenes like that go on. A great movie that I'm already looking forward to seeing again. 8/10

My take: they did hear about what he'd done in the past and in the war and heard that he was prone to outbursts of brutality. the point of the list was to slowly force his violent side out, destroying any of his human qualities. they wanted to create an antichrist, essentially.

Decided to not watch the rematch tonight and instead watch movies

The Big Lebowski
When life's got you down and the shit hits the fan, just say to yourself "Fuck it Dude. Let's go bowling"

First time watch and thankfully I thought it was wonderful. Clearly Goodman provided the most laughs

Drive
Didn't really plan on seeing this tonight, but there was a slight complication with another movie I had planned to watch. Seen this bad boy five times and it never gets old

As for the movie I wanted to see....Caligula. It seems I got a rotten BR disc, cause for some reason once the main menu pops up, there are no selection options on the screen. The title shows up along with different scenes showing up and the menu music playing constantly. However, the 2nd disc was just fine.

Must be a sign from the Gods to prevent me from ever watching it. I'll try to exchange it for another copy

Superb. Most fun movie I've seen from Woody Allen. Owen Wilson was a great stand-in for Allen, especially when surrounded by the other characters in this movie.

Past couple days, which I am too lazy to score:
The Blair Witch Project - I do think it should be commended for making the found footage stylistic more accessible than cannibal holocaust, the "first" real film in the style. and the film is certainly creepy at parts. acting is not very good through a lot of it and the climax isn't that great.
Take Shelter - extremely compelling look at modern mental illness. Shannon and Chastain=brilliant. kind of up there for last year, I think.
The Sixth Sense - decent thriller. score's great. and you know what? osment is the best actor in this film.
Three Colors: Red - wow. superb, astounding, etc. those words don't mean enough here. I adore so much that, in a way, it's a film about film. Which I never saw coming. and the conclusions kieslowski makes about what film does...I think they're going to be part of the reason I watch movies for the rest of my life.

rewatch:
The Iron Giant - hooray, this holds up! It's probably better than when I was a kid, actually.

watched this last week It was a gorgeous looking film, the way each shot was framed created such an sense of beauty and peace, and it felt like the film didnt rely so much on dialogue as little glances and looks.

really one of those films that feel like its going to stick with me, how did this not win best foreign pic in 09?

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol - Pretty good. Loved the action scenes and impressive set-pieces and locations. Climax came a bit too early and some of the bits in between action scenes were a bit dull. Cruise has so much charisma. 7.5/10
This Is Spinal Tap - Weirdly enough I also watched this this weekend. About 50 minutes I found out I had seen this before, guess it did not leave much of an impression. Was pretty entertaining overall, but it's not really my cup of tea. 6/10
Un chien andalou - No idea what I watched, but I liked it nonetheless. Must have been quite the shocker back in 1929. 7.5/10

Miss Bala - Tries to give a gritty and realistic look into Mexican organized crime, but for some reason I couldn't really get into the movie. 6.5/10
Martha Marcy May Marlene - Hauntingly awesome psychological thriller. Loved the acting, atmosphere and cinematography. After Take Shelter another 'smaller' movie that makes 2011 worthwhile. 8/10
Stroszek - Typical Herzog shenanigans. Entertaining to a certain level, but nothing special. 6/10
Perfect Blue - Anime with lots of mindfuckery. The thin line between reality and dreams/hallucinations was great and it had some similarities to a crazy-ass giallo. Very cool. 7.5/10

It's a really haunting and amazing film. As to why it did not win? Well, you should check out El secreto de sus ojos, which was amazing and had a very well deserved win.
