PA3 is probably the best PA so far. I really like it.

TwiB was pretty good. The ending ruined it for me, though.

Hey GAF I am stumped for ideas, I am seeing my GF on wednesday she has been ill from diabetic ketones and I wanna get some movies to watch with her. She doesn't watch many movies so chances are she won't have seen any that GAF suggest, she likes clever films, fantasy type ones, doesn't particularly like horror (but she wants to see woman in black). So GAF suggest away lol.

Fat Man & Little Boy: Kinda boring, as you would expect from a historical film, but still very interesting. I already knew a lot about Oppenheimer from a PBS documentary, but he was still a very cool dude.
Shutter Island: Amazing! I just love Shyamalan mindfuck movies. It could have been more subtle with the twist; the last 30 minutes really hit you over the head with it.
Space Cowboys: Never would have expected a movie with Eastwood and TLJ to be so dull. It starts off being a realistic NASA movie and turns into a Michael Bay-Armageddon cheesefest after the Soviet missile twist. WTF at TLJ dying on the moon.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: Now I really enjoyed this movie after finally seeing all of it, but it seems a tad overrated since it's almost as highly regarded as The Godfather. Jack Nicholson deserves his Oscar and most of the main hospital patients are good characters. But Nurse Ratchet is not a classic villain. I had seen the World Series scene before and she acts well, but I never felt her evilness other than being a dick. I never noticed Danny DeVito or Christopher Lloyd either - who were they? Maybe it's a movie that grows on mulitple viewings.

Life of Brian - some nice comedic bits and an amazing ending.
The Lost Boys - Liked this a lot. Acting is deliciously wacky. whole message about generation gaps is obvious but pretty well handled. loved that it didn't shy away from the gore at all when the time came to have some.
Risky Business - Weird? takes itself so seriously despite seeming like it could be much more amusing. audience is so closely tied to Joel and he's so incessantly nervous (barring a few "cool" moments of his surrounded by a complete return to being neurotic) that the audience is uncomfortable too. in a movie that's supposed to be about taking a big risk as a teenager and almost flubbing it only to learn to have fun.
Ted - a movie consisting of jokes better suited for twitter with zero delicacy in establishing and developing relationships. not as bad as it could have been thanks to the occasional good joke. also Tom Skerritt!
Boy A - does pretty nicely with themes of forgiveness and the responsibility of children and cycles of abuse for the huge majority of the running time. Plot with Terry's son is ridiculous. Garfield's performance is great.

there was no twist he wasn't crazy ever. he was a real cop the whole time and they killed him!
I know "shyamalan twist" has been a thing for a while but I still resent it as a term a lot. Cabinet of Dr. Caligari has a better twist than any shyamalan piece

Lockout - Never heard of it before seeing the Blu Ray trailer. I haven't laughed this much at an "Action" movie in forever. And I mean laughing with the movie instead of at it. The main character (Snow) is cracking me up at how nonchalant he's taking this entire thing, maybe its because I'm a sarcastic bastard as well. I liked it 7/10.

American Reunion

Enjoyed quite a bit. At first, I thought it was going to be one of those failed attempts at bringing a good franchise back, but it was superior to the previously movie (American Wedding), and on par with the first two. All the main characters looked great to me, thought they were going to look older. Stifler and Jim were the best ones, but I thought Fynch should've been given more screen time.
Liked how they only showed some of the old characters in the party scene at the end. Sherminator's bit was hilarious.

I'm glad the gang finally showed some affection towards Stifler. I was waiting for this moment to happen (also him fucking Fynch's mom. The last scene was brilliant with both guys shouting 'MILF' :lol

AP 2 > AP 1 = Reunion >>>> Wedding

LotR The Fellowship of the Ring

Yes, it was my first time watching it, so I thought I'd go already with the extended edition. It would be stating the obvious If I started praising it, but it's safe to say it deserves all of the praise it gets. Brilliant all the way through, never thought I'd watch more than 3 hours and never get bored by one second.
Loved the way they introduced all the main characters. Aragorn was my favorite by far.

Can't wait to watch the other two. I was surprised by how open the ending was.

Gone Baby Gone

Ben Affleck's new movie (Argo) might make him one of my favorite directors, at least. I had watched The Town multiple times already, and I absolutely love it. Gone Baby Gone isn't as good, but it comes close. It has a greater cast though, and I much prefered Casey's leading than Ben's. Not sure yet how I felt about the twists, I didn't see it coming but the ending might have ruined it a bit, for me. Still, it's really great and comes off recommended.

You'd probably kick yourself with Christopher Lloyd, he was Taber - the guy that shouted a lot (last scene he's the one shouting and laughing) and got burned by the cigarette at the meeting. Danny was Martini, small guy (obviously) who smiled a lot. So many great performances in that film. With regards to Nurse Ratched, at the end she angered me like no other character has with the whole Billy suicide thing and everything that followed. Had more wrong with her than the inmates.

Isn't it a bit weird how everyone's positive on Moonrise Kingdom? It's my favorite movie of the year so far, but the reception has been too good. Even Kermode liked it, and he's usually allergic to Wes Anderson's twee.

I'm expecting swoon/jarosh/Snowman to come down and rip it a new one and say how the movie doesn't work, is contradictory, and I'll have to agree because they are good critics.

Has there been any big critic who downright hated it?

I figured that the screaming guy was him; I just didn't notice him until the end. DeVito was hard to recognize because he wasn't fat yet, but he was by far the shortest guy, and I never heard him speak to be recognized.

The movie is oddly paced and reliant on flat visual gimmickry that is far too disconnected from story and characters. Clearly, the highlights are the two kids at the center of the plot, but even they can't save a movie that's so bloodless and academically, calculatedly whimsical. There was very little truth in any of the overly stagy performances. And Edward Norton was grossly miscast. I'm not sure what's going on here, but Anderson, whose early work I adored, has really lost me with this one.
Wow, jarosh really lost me with that, every single sentence I have to disagree haha. The most self-serving quirk was Darjeeling Limited. This is the least robotic Anderson movie imo, with more attention paid to character development and backstories than just aesthetic characterisation. There is honesty and depth to the romance. The third act had me on the edge of my seat, which Life Aquatic's action scene couldn't even do. The "flat visual gimmickry" of diorama and storybook is more appropriate with kids here in this time period. Edward Norton was a highlight, so against type and so lovable as the over-eager scout captain.

I didn't recognize DeVito first time I watched it either. Perhaps a testament to their performances that they're hard to recognize!

I was oddly worried when all the positive reviews were coming in. I watched it twice when it hit theatres here in May and it might be my least favourite Wes. I had no connection to Moonrise, it didn't hit me in any way - it was beautifully shot and charming, the cast were great - but I just had no emotional connection which worried me. When I think of his best work, which are my among my favourite movies, I have moments that are immediately in my head- each scene a reason why Wes is one of my favourite directors : Dignan's moment at the end of Bottle Rocket "they'll never catch me, because I'm fucking innocent" then into Rolling Stones 2000 Man as the film spirals to its conclusion, then with Rushmore Ooh La La kicking in as Max and Ms. Fisher walk to the dancefloor or "I've had a rough year dad", Royal Tenenbaums climax and funeral - or the opening 10 minutes, Darjeeling Limited closing scenes and river scene, etc. Those scenes all clicked with me on first viewing. Notably, his films always finish strong, and while Moonrise did too with the ending shot I just think it was never any more than charming. It was fairly anti-climactic as well I think.

I also think there were too many scenes that were bordering on not working. It's also the least funny of his work, Bill Murray aside there weren't too many laughs in there. Still enjoyed it though.

Just got back from Moonrise Kingdom I quite liked it but I was overhyped thanks to all the positive press. I spent a lot of time with a smile on my face (and some time awkwardly looking away from the screen because I was the only single-mid-20's guy there (I'm guessing you know what I'm referring to).

That said, I felt like the humor never really reached a peak. There were lots of funny bits throughout, but I was hoping that there would have been one standout humorous sequence towards the end. Or an emotional climax ala the car accident in Tenenbaums. That aside it was probably Wes Anderson's most easily enjoyable film in a long while.

Watched In Time the other day. Pretty cool concept, though its mostly at the service of a standard heist/romance formula. Whatever it is Niccol is trying to say through the movie never really comes through in any meaningful way. Judging it for what it is, rather than what it could have been though, its a solid 3.5/5, its no Gattaca or Lord of War. Good to decent performances, very nice cinematography and music. And holy shit Amanda Seyfried is incredibly fine. Costume design overall is stylish as hell.

I felt the movie could have benefit from an R rating though.

In Time must have been my most disappointing movie last year, I hated it so much :(

Roman Holiday - Audrey Hepburn is cute as a button and impossible not to love, while Peck is a great everyman. Setting was fine and I loved the shot at the end of him walking away from the empty chair. Felt like a very modern and fresh romantic movie, even though it is already almost 50 years old. 7.5/10

Victory - WWII, Prisoners of war Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine and Pelé (yes, the Brazilian football player) play a game against the Nazi's of Max von Sydow while planning an escape with the French resistance. It might not be very good, but it certainly was enjoyable. I mean, it has slow motion shots of Stallone as a goalkeeper, how cool is that? 5.5/10
