While I don't mind the idea of the OS automatically pushing programs in a dormant state to a terminated state, I'm not keen on the OS lying to me regarding the termination of one, especially when file locking, memory allocation, and rogue processes are considered.

No, they aren't as big of an issue in Snow Leopard, because I know what programs are open or closed.

I also agree with the review whole heartedly on the subject of scroll bars. They don't just provide action, they convey information, and it is unacceptable to have to manually check windows whether or not their displayed contents are comprehensive. Granted, they can convey this information differently, and I'd be fine with alternatives.

The section on iCal was also appreciated.

As fucked as natural scrolling feels on a trackpad, it's about 70000000x worse when you plug in a mouse and use the scroll wheel.

Now that Spaces are gone, how do I assign certain programs to certain spaces? And is there anyway to drag programs between spaces like before? I used to be able to drag programs say, from space 1 to space 4 by dragging the program to the bottom of space 1. Now I can only drag left and right and wait as it scrolls...

Anyone who's made a bootable dvd and done a fresh install can confirm that it takes forever to load the installer after holding option and selecting the installer disc?

How long do I wait? Nothing happens. Making a bootable usb now to see if thats any better.

Haven't used Lion yet... but on iOS, scrolling with on-demand scrollbars popping up is much better IMHO. No you don't have the constant visual cue their, but at the same time I personally don't need it there because I am paying attention to the content, not the scrollbar. granted because iOS is an actual touch interface, I can literally just touch instead of moving a cursor there first then double touch drag.

I really think apple is just preparing people for 10.8 which will be built on Macs that are primarily touchscreen devices. Going from Snow Leopard (or the same scrolling that we've had for 25 years) would probably throw people for too much of a leap going right to touch screen with no scrollbars.

So a few things:

- My battery is getting killed on Lion, anyone else experincing battery lifetime being shortend?

- How the hell do I make the deskptop icons smaller? They're insanely huge now

- With the new Thunderbolt only display from Apple, and Thunderbolt being the only thing except USB on all of the laptops I have one big question: How the hell do I hook it up to a normal VGA/DVI monitor?

Couldn't stand seeing Dashboard as a "space" so glad I could turn that off. Felt like it defeated the purpose of Dashboard to begin with.

Yup. I'm running much hotter too and I can't find anything out of the ordinary eating up CPU cycles in Activity Monitor.

Launchpad is not the Desktop, it's an app that fades in on-top of your screen when summoned.

iOS is also designed to be run on small dedicated touchscreens that only run one active application at a time. You're touching the screen regardless. You're not scrolling a window regardless. Even then, I don't necessarily agree. It's like taking lifeboats out because they make the deck too "cluttered".

Go into Mission Control and add a new desktop (a + button should pop up at the very right of your Spaces row), then drag and drop the window you want to move to your new Space while you're still in Mission Control.

You can just drag apps to the + button and create a new desktop, then if you want you can *permanently assign that app to that specific desktop by right-click Options > Assign To X Desktop on the app's dock icon.

*until you manually delete the desktop.

I found that after installing lion it was spotlight indexing everything that was eating the battery life, making my macbook pro run hotter than usual. After it finished all seems good.

Loving full screen apps and three finger gesture to flip between them!

Pros/Cons for simply upgrading? After all, it would save me several hours of work if I can just upgrade...

I really tried to like the new "Natural Scrolling", I really did. But it just feels so wrong. I dont use the left and right full screen app scrolling, so I just went back to the old style. So good.

By the way, why does it seem like everyone is using Full Screen on so many apps when it seems like only Google Chrome and iTunes can do it for me? I dont even see the option in the App Store

I'm pretty sure they made lion pretty much to be upgraded as the clean install is basically hidden.

Its kind of funny seeing the installs screen. Under the hood my OS is transforming.

The gizmodo review is absolutely idiotic, as predicted. Amazing that site has such a following when the articles and opinion pieces are so immature, childish, and demonstrate a complete lack of understanding of underlying concepts and principles. He's pretty much asking for iOS on a bigger screen, and is disappointed that did not happen, even thought it is unrealistic and would have been a disaster.

I have a 3.5-ish year old non-unibody Macbook Pro with a mouse that only has three (including the scroll-wheel) buttons. Is it worth an upgrade? Should I get a new mouse? I'm very interested in buying this but I'm not sure I'll be able to take advantage of it with such limited control options.

For some reason iPhoto is the only application that wasn't updated automatically from iLife. It still asks me if I want to upgrade to iLife '11 for like 15 bucks or whatever it is from the app store. Dunno how to fix that.

I'm on a MBP. I already use my applications in Maximized mode (I manually stretch them out) so the full screen doesn't make a huge difference. Also I cant seem to activate full screen mode on anything except Chrome and Itunes

Chrome doesn't even really do real full screen, unfortunately.

I have iLife 11 and Safari running in full screen right now and it's just a much nicer and more organized workflow.

I desperately want a full screen Reeder update, though.

Arrrggh!

I knew this would happen.

I was going to hold off on getting Lion until the dust settled, but all the excitement and commotion has me itching.

What happens with Time Machine after you make an upgrade installation? Does it try to do a big crazy backup (ie size of entire contents), or just the updates from installing the OS?

I ask because my Time Machine drive is only about the same size as my internal at the moment, and as such, only has about 200GB free - if it chooses to try and backup everything, I will be forced to delete it and start fresh (ie no Snow Leopard backup).

Here's something weird. Two finger scrolling works fine with my index and middle fingers (aligned vertically) but not with my index finger and thumb -- even on the same area of my trackpad. I wonder how it's detecting that.
