No it's not, the build numbers are different. The GM build won't be seeded any future updates like 10.7.1, although you'll still get individual app updates (like iLife).

Those of you on the GM, are you going to install the retail version? - Nevermind, the answer is yes.

Also, what's the consensus on in-place update vs clean install?

AFAIK only if the release build was changed from the GM. that the MAS install gives the same build as the GM gives reason to think it's the same.

that said, someone could run an MD5 checksum on the DMG in the install app and compare it to the GM release to make certain.

once MAS Lion is installed it gives the same build as the GM version.

I'd like to know this as well. I'm installing this on a brand new computer, so there is really no reason not to do a clean install, right?

Where would the install file be saved to? Surely you don't actually mean the installer icon I saved to my desktop to install the GM From.

I'd only say clean install if your mac is over a year old tbh.

Assuming you can get the retail downloaded, will the retail install over the GM?

My machine is a 2011 MBP, so it's new enough that I may not wipe assuming my question above can happen.

I assume there is something that tells the software update system that you're running retail and not GM. OS Updates only come to the retail version.

Actually, I wonder if OS Updates will be handled through the App Store now instead of Software Update?

This is starting to make sense.

For those who can't install retail because they have GM, backup (in case I'm wrong) and delete the installer file from your desktop. This should allow you to download and install the retail.

So, the problem is with people trying to upgrade from the beta? If I'm running just regular Snow Leopard, there's nothing to worry about?

BTW, just verified on the GM release - the plist file in the GM installer also claims the same previous build as on twitter -

Code:
<key>BuildMachineOSBuild</key>
	<string>11A494</string>
it's the same folks. move on.

Downloading now! Can't wait!

Also, the GM was not a Disk Image. At least not the one we got. It was an Application with Disk Images inside like I presume the full version that is downloading now will be.

Also, $70 for a fucking USB version? You might as well buy Snow Leopard because the only people who will need this are people without Snow Leopard. A USB stick is cheaper itself. So hopefully my instructions on how to make one yourself will be popular enough to get Apple to change something about that price.

This is starting to make sense. Instead of the build determining whether or not you will get OS Software Updates, it will be the Mac App Store that is tied to your account. If you purchased it through their store, you will get the updates, if not, you're screwed. It's a smart way to ensure people are actually buying it.

Devs with the GM probably don't need to update as their Apple ID accounts are already recognized as Dev accounts and they will be granted the updates.

not sure about screwed. MAS is the delivery mechanism for purchasing Lion; it stands to reason that all future software updates will still occur through, well, the software update mechanism (it's still there in Lion, after all). if you're on the DP or GM you can still 'buy' Lion by holding onto the option key and clicking the button. that'll negate the system check.

the big test will be whether the GM builds can be updated through that or the large standalone combo updates. i'm assuming they will since the builds are the same.

hold onto the option key and buy Lion from MAS. then follow the many guides online showing how to install a fresh Lion.

I think future updates will ONLY be handled through the MAS. That's my theory anyways. Combo Updates may require a MAS/Apple ID account check. The latter doesn't quite sound like Apple though.

Success!

Hold down Option key when you click the Lion App in the App Store.

This bypasses any version check.

Edit: beaten.

pinky bet ;)

DP updates went through Software Update even though devs 'purchased' Lion on MAS.

I hope not. I never open the MAS. Does it have a push setting that im missing? I had a twitter for Mac update waiting there for weeks and would have never known about it if I didnt accidentally click on the MAS icon on my dock.

I currently own an Unibody Macbook 5,1: 2.4Ghz C2D, 2GB Ram, GPU: 9400M. I was wondering if I should update to Lion given my current computer specs? I bought the laptop when it was first introduced by apple sometime in 2008, so is it time to upgrade?

That won't work. If you read the terms and conditions for the Up To Date program, it says:

This offer is good only in the United States (50 states and the District of Columbia) and Canada, and valid only in accordance with the terms set forth in this document.

This sucks because the guy at the apple store in AUS told me I would get a free update for my iMac.

EDIT: I was wrong, Aussie's use this link to claim your up to date program:

You don't need to keep the installer after it is installed. Just delete it or store it on USB. The App Store will simply run the update.

So now that we're confident that the GM and Retail are the same build number, is there any reason for me to install the version I'm downloading from the MAS right now?
