We would rather cook something for ourselves+our friends and then go out and do something less boring than a restaurant.

Edit:

The one time I ever worked a job with "tipping" (gas station attendant/garage book keeper) the best tippers were

Attractive college aged white girls, from shit cars to obviously bought by their parent's BMW's. probably because I was flirty and not creepy.

Elderly black women.

Middle aged white guys with European accents.

20s-30s Landscapers because I would bust my ass to fill their truck/mowers/gas cans fast so they didn't have to wait for 30 min in line like they would with the guy who worked the days I didn't.

Almost never did I get tipped by anyone else. Oh well make more now tips or not.

I can reaffirm all the second hand word of mouth. I had a few people I knew that worked at a restaurant & would always complain when there were a lot of black people. They told me they would NEVER get any tips that day.

We don't need douchebags who think their way is the best way in this world.

there was this one time when there was a dispute about how much to tip at an all-you-can-eat buffet, i said it was 15% is fine since it's not that expensive anyway, and my cousin agreed, but my aunt insisted that it was too much, since it wasn't a real full service restaurant, and the waitress had a "holy shit" look on her face when she got the tip..

Tipping might not improve service in Japan, but it certainly is going to have an effect when you make 2.13 an hour and you have to tip a percentage to the bartenders, foodrunners, bussers, etc.

Lack of tipping doesn't just hurt the waiter, it affects a lot more people around you than you may think. A few rogue shitty tippers aren't going to get the system changed so the house is paying real wages.

Edit

Pizza Deliveries: Have maybe 1-2 times a year. If your company charges a delivery fee and they don't pay you any of that, not my fault you let them screw you. If no delivery fee I'll tip about 10$ depending on what my change is/the price of gas. Driving a pizza somewhere doesn't take skill, but it takes gas and much more time/effort than walking 20 feet to the kitchen.

My friends and I tip heavily, in the 50% range, if the service is good. Especially if we're regulars. Once the staff gets to know us we never have to wait for a table (bypassing a 90 minute wait on Father's Day for example), are given extra attention, freebies, etc.

That said, I do not care for the default expectation of tipping. I think they're earned. It's not like I have a secret score card, but there are things I expect from the wait staff. Refills, checking on us regularly, getting the orders right the first time, etc.

My biggest pet peeve though are built-in gratuities. I hate them. What motivation is there for good service if the reward is mandatory? If you're going to tack an 18% gratuity onto my bill then I'm not giving a penny more. And it lowers my general opinion of the establishment.

Uhh, this is a standard practice at most restaurants. Tips are divided among the entire staff at the end of the day.

With regards to the example I was discussing, you would need to compare the average attitude of a waiter or bartender who receives tips (NYC) to the average attitude of a waiter or bartender who doesn't receive tips (Tokyo).

When I was 16-17, I bagged groceries. One year I worked an 8 hour shift on Christmas day. At the time it was a big deal. It was the only grocery store chain open on that Christmas. We were slammed all day. Every checkout stand open and lines 7-8 carts deep.

I must have helped at least a dozen people out to their car, loaded an entire cart's worth of groceries etc, the entire day I didn't get a single tip. Not one dollar, On Christmas day. All because the store said, no that's ok, be a cheapskate, you don't need to tip them. That's why we pay them $5 an hour.

Right, the average quality of wait staff in the NYC was much lower than in Tokyo. So as a visitor, why should I feel obliged to join the American socialist movement and give 20% of the bill to a NYC waiter for bog-stock service when I didn't pay it to a Tokyo waiter for first-class, bow-when-I-enter-and-take-my-jacket-even-though-its-just-a-cafe service?

I don't know why that is so hard. Some people at the airport go the the Sky Lounge and some people go to the McDonald's. People just feel entitled to services without paying.

And the difference is that tipping is expected in the US. The business plan and pay structure is based on it.

Don't get me wrong, I tip. I'm specifically referring to the suggestion earlier that waiters who receive tips provide better service, when everything I've seen points to the exact opposite.

How is mandatory tipping not wealth-redistribution? I'm not talking about tipping for great service, I'm talking about the idea of mandatory 15-20% tipping regardless of the quality of service.
