Fantastic, sign me up! I'd much prefer that sort of transparency to the current system. Food and drinks would be more expensive, but the total cost of dining out won't change. I want servers to be paid a real wage.

You would have an argument if tips were solely given based on merit, but that's not the case. Far too many servers operate on the assumption that they're entitled to tips - patrons didn't collectively decide that they wanted to raise the minimum from 15% to 20% a few years ago, for instance. It just happened and there wasn't a corresponding rise in the quality of service. If I justifiably didn't tip for poor service, I would face social stigma and couldn't go back to that restaurant because the industry tolerates vindictive, anti-consumer behavior. The 20% I tip nowadays always represents a wild overpayment for the value conferred on me by the server. Tipping is a shakedown, plain and simple.

Also, it shouldn't be my responsibility to do the restaurant manager's job for them. Let them handle their own HR. Restaurants everywhere else in the world function just fine, as do untold thousands of wage or salary-based industries. Anecdotally, the service I've received in non-tipping countries was almost always better than service in the U.S. when comparing similar caliber restaurants.

that probably had more to do with them being young (although 28 yo's should know better) and stupid. my friend, who is white, once made me try to walk out without paying when we were in college. got caught, was fucking embarrassing.

yes, well we tried to pay initially but they didn't take credit cards. blew my goddamn mind that steak and shake didn't take cards in 2004. I rarely carry cash so of course I don't have enough to pay. my friend, who didn't have enough cash either, was pissed and said, "i'm leaving without paying, you can come with me or stay here alone." He had given me a ride there so i agree to leave, but the waitress catches and yells at us to stay. we make up a lie and say that we were gonna to go an ATM to get cash. in the end, she makes on of us stay (of course I have to stay and endure the embarrassment). my friend comes back with cash, pays, and finally we leave.

I know plenty of servers who make $20+/hr and the tips are tax-free. Some servers are awesome, some are the most entitled pieces of shit I've ever had the displeasure of working with. Serving can be difficult, sure, but when your ass is standing around holding up the walls when I'm asking over and over again for plates to put your table's food on? You don't make it seem like you're worth even 10%.

And saying 20% is the standard expected tip? Then saying certain groups don't tip? (Students, blacks, brown, etc.) Seriously, you can fuck right off, you racist, entitled piece of shit. A tip is a reward for great service. Maybe you should ask those who don't tip if they had a great time instead of bitching. You don't make what the expected tip, the guest decides what they feel like giving you.

I don't calculate the percentage nonsense. Too much work. I leave something, though. But I know it's under the 15% mark. However, my friend always leaves $5. Which I think is ridiculous. An $8-$10 meal and he'll leave a $5 tip. Crazy.

My standard tip is 20% just about always. Amazing service or mediocre service...20%. In the rare occasion that the server is TERRRRRIBLE I drop to 10%. In one instance I tipped a penny. In one other instance I stiffed them.
