No one waits tables to make minimum wage though...it's not an easy job, skilled waiters should be compensated appropriately. If your culture doesn't tip then the menu prices will go up to pay the waiters or the quality of wait staff will go down tremendously.

![]() This is how VT handles it, if they make less than the standard minimum wage with the base wage plus tips, the employer is responsible for paying the difference. I like this policy, and I really wish the U.S. would move away from this customer-subsidized system, but as long as the system is in place I will continue to tip 20%. |

Oh god this: "Think about it: For black folks, there are still relatively few opportunities (outside of therapy) to articulate our frustration with the unbalanced scales of power in our society. Even for those in the upper echelons, the playing field isn't level, and in our current economic climate, everything is in flux, making waiters easy targets. I found that the tables that demanded the most tipped the worst. It became painfully clear that I gave my distressed guest an opportunity to feel superior." is just lulzy. FUCK THE MAN, screw the waiter? Hahahahaha
And I've had friends who've waited tables and well, I won't comment on what really happens in most restaurants. Lets just say that the articles title isn't that far off. |

I tip 20% or nothing... For me to tip nothing they have to be pretty bad. like bring me someone elses food or mess up my order somehow. That said its pretty rare that I dont tip.
Dont think of it as extra you have to pay... its part of eating at a fine establishment... If I dont get served at a sit down place though then forget your tip. I dont care if you have a tip spot on the receipt... tips are for getting served my food. not getting up and getting it at the counter. |

I never calculate to the penny, thats retarded. I usually go round numbers, so lets say its 12 dollars, I'll leave a toonie and be on my way. Thats a bit more than 15% but I'm not going to ask the bitch for 20 cents back. The worst part of is none of my friends tip. None. So I end up putting a toonie on the table (paid with debit) and it looks like a group tip.

You people sound like high school kids who only go out to eat at the local diner for some disco fries.
20% is basically what a server hopes to make when the night is over. I know this from experience. It's not out of the norm whatsoever. Also, if most restaurants payed their full staff a living wage, they would sink very quickly. |

I work in food service and if you're going out to eat out, I don't see how you don't expect to pay premium tip. For one thing, when you eat out you're not paying for the food...the actual food you get, even that new york steak with all the trimmings, probably comes out to about three or four bucks total for all the food you get even though the meal is about $30. What you're paying for is the environment, the convenience of not cooking the food yourself, having the food cooked by a chef with years of experience making that same meal you just ordered, the person waiting on your needs, and the amount of time you spend in the restaurant being able to socialize. Cooks usually get paid significantly more than servers and also work more hours on a more steady time frame...servers are usually paid minimum and in order to stretch that paycheck they usually do anything they can to make their service as good as possible in the hopes that you give them a tip.
