Oscar-worthy performances in the Sci-fi genre
#1
I was reading this article earlier and I thought to myself, "What are some good performances that aren't listed here?"
http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/1026...formances.html For the lazy, here's the Top Ten: Michael Rennie – The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951) Vincent Price – The Last Man On Earth (1964) Natalya Bondarchuk – Solaris (1972) Ian Holm – Alien (1979) Terence Stamp – Superman II (1980) Rutger Hauer – Blade Runner (1982) Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis – The Fly (1986) Jim Carrey – The Truman Show (1998) Sean Gullette – Pi (1998) Sam Rockwell – Moon (2009) So GAF, what performances in sci-fi do you think were snubbed because of the genre they happened to be in? I personally think Sharlto Copley deserved some recognition for his role as Wikus van de Merwe in District 9. I loved how he portrayed his character as not a bright, strong, or cunning guy. His character just had a lot of determination to get back his life. Sure he did some things that were not, shall we say, kind-hearted. Because of that it made him more believable as a character than some goody two shoes facing adversity. |

This is difficult. Although I've a list of beloved sci-fi films that deserved Oscar recognition, I never really considered any specific performance because generally I think the writing and direction in most sci-fi films overshadow the performance, though there are a few Sam Rockwell/Moon-calibur turns out there.
But you guys have already mentioned most of the good ones! Hmmm, how about Hugh Jackman - The Fountain Will Ferrell - Stranger Than Fiction Jodie Foster - Contact Tom Cruise - Vanilla Sky

Sam Rockwell's performance in Moon was mediocre at best. It didn't break the storyline, but his character didn't draw me into the story either.
I'll have to agree with the above that Will Ferrell was amazing in Stranger Than Fiction. People underestimate his range because he puts a lot of subtlety into his dramatic roles. |
