Oscar-worthy performances in the Sci-fi genre #1

I was reading this article earlier and I thought to myself, "What are some good performances that aren't listed here?"

http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/1026...formances.html

For the lazy, here's the Top Ten:

Michael Rennie – The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951)
Vincent Price – The Last Man On Earth (1964)
Natalya Bondarchuk – Solaris (1972)
Ian Holm – Alien (1979)
Terence Stamp – Superman II (1980)
Rutger Hauer – Blade Runner (1982)
Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis – The Fly (1986)
Jim Carrey – The Truman Show (1998)
Sean Gullette – Pi (1998)
Sam Rockwell – Moon (2009)

So GAF, what performances in sci-fi do you think were snubbed because of the genre they happened to be in?

I personally think Sharlto Copley deserved some recognition for his role as Wikus van de Merwe in District 9. I loved how he portrayed his character as not a bright, strong, or cunning guy. His character just had a lot of determination to get back his life. Sure he did some things that were not, shall we say, kind-hearted. Because of that it made him more believable as a character than some goody two shoes facing adversity.

Jude Law Best Supporting actor - Gattaca

The dude in Moon. That's at least Golden Globe worthy.

I wouldn't call what Jeff Goldblum does as acting.

Jim Carrey on the other hand was terrific in The Truman Show. Good pick, I wouldn't have categorized that as sci-fi off the top of my head.

It is okay. BSG was criminally overlooked for the Emmys when it was on. (The first two seasons at least). So many great performances on that show.

My biggest gripe now is John Noble's continuous lack of Emmy noms for Fringe.

This is difficult. Although I've a list of beloved sci-fi films that deserved Oscar recognition, I never really considered any specific performance because generally I think the writing and direction in most sci-fi films overshadow the performance, though there are a few Sam Rockwell/Moon-calibur turns out there.

But you guys have already mentioned most of the good ones!

Hmmm, how about

Hugh Jackman - The Fountain
Will Ferrell - Stranger Than Fiction
Jodie Foster - Contact
Tom Cruise - Vanilla Sky

The role wasn't very big, but I can't imagine it with anyone else, and it was the capstone on the film.

Sam Rockwell's performance in Moon was mediocre at best. It didn't break the storyline, but his character didn't draw me into the story either.

I'll have to agree with the above that Will Ferrell was amazing in Stranger Than Fiction. People underestimate his range because he puts a lot of subtlety into his dramatic roles.

Gattaca deserved recognition for its writing, directing, and music more than it did for the performances. And I love Gattaca.

He's overall bloody brilliant. Although to many people he's not considered one of the 'blockbuster' actors and doesn't often have the lead role in the big films he's in, he's probably the closest out of all of the big actors that can turn his hand to more or less anything.

We still have Christopher Lee, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen with us, but under those guys, I'd have Weaving as the next best for sheer variety and quality of his performance.

Truman show isn't sci-fi.

How is Truman Show NOT science-fiction?

Because it doesn't have aliens and spaceships?

I find stories like The Truman Show to be the best kind of science fiction.

I'd probably call it fantasy or a fairy tail, like Star Wars.

It's most definitely sci-fi. Unlike fantasy and fairy 'tails' it draws parallels with the world we live in, and the world of the future. Specifically, the world of entertainment. It's a satire sure, but it's certainly not a fantasy.

I'd agree that Star Wars' definition as sci-fi is problematic.
