Both of this songs have one of the best lyrics ever I think.

Another great Ghazal from Mirza Ghalib: Un ke Dekhe se jo Aajati hai. The poetry is out of this world.

I was talking to my friend and we were arguing coming up with the best actors list. My list was

1) Dilip Kumar
2) Sanjeev Kumar
3) Naseeruddin Shah
4) Guru Dutt
5) Amitabh Bachchan

Runners up: Raj Kapoor, Sashi Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, SRK, Kamal Hassan, Anupam Kher

His list had 1) Amitabh Bachchan, 2) Raj Kappoor, and rest I forgot. What do you guys think

I still haven't seen Guru Dutt's films so can't say much there but I would swap out Amitabh for Anupam Kher the rest seems in line (for the top 5 that is). While SRK can be entertaining to watch I don't think I've seen him play a role to be considered amongst the rest of the people you stated but then again I'm no film critic and would not know the 'mechanics' of a good performance. What abot Sunil Dutt?

Also what do people think of Sanjay Leela Bhansali? I really like Khamoshi and elements of his subsequent films.

5) Maniratnam

I really do not like him. All of his movies are copied to nth degree. KHamoshi and hum dil dechuke sanam were well made so I give him that but regardless he copies heavyly.

You mean plot wise right? Yeah you're right there but I think he adds enough of his own style to them to make it excusable, and anyway it isn't like he's outright copying but has similar main plot points. No not counting Devdas since that's a remake. But yes I agree with you in that I like his earlier film (Khamoshi..) more than his recent stuff as well.

yep. From interview today I found this intresting

" You were kept well away from fairy tales and happy stories in your childhood, I assume?

See, you are born with a certain temperament. Even if you read a lot of stories that were happy and bright - after all, in childhood, you don't read a lot of intense stories. It's like, if Aishwarya and Salman were to get together in "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam", it would not remain "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam" for me any more at all. My biggest flaw in "Khamoshi" was that the girl remained alive. I had to do that out of pressure from Polygram. They said, happy ending, or we don't give you the money, we're backing out.

In my story, Manisha actually dies and she goes into the world of silence as she is buried, and that is what "Khamoshi" is all about. In that sense, "Khamoshi" is an incomplete work for me. It bothers me till today that I compromised. I should have stuck to my position. But even otherwise, most of my movies are not those where at the end, people meet and come together and all that
..."

That would have made khamoshi even more stronger. I hope aish keeps working in his films. He brings out best in her.

Watched Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster

Nice Movie, somewhat Omkara like but you see that Jimmy Shergill is a great actor and needs to do more movies/roles. Just like Kay Kay Menon.

Khamoshi and Black were good. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam had good songs, but the story was very bare. And that is the problem with Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

His movies have one or two lines of "story". The rest is fluff, songs, things that are way too drawn out and obnoxious. I was watching the ending scene of Guzaarish. It was so ridiculous. Hrithik Roshan asks prosecuter to get inside a box and then he locks him in for 60 seconds. Prosecutor is let out after a minute and he's all wtf and complaining, and hrithik roshan utters something like "You can't live 60 seconds of my life?". It sounds good on paper, but looks ridiculous on screen. Why would anyone get inside a box in the middle of a legal proceeding. Saawariya was even more stupid. It was more like a badly done play.

Well, we only know the plotline. Remains to be seen how good it actually is. None of the superhero flicks from Bollywood have had good stories, apart from maybe Toofan. :P

Yeah the story looks childish. SRK still thinks superhero movies are for kiddies under 7 years old. He should watch Dark Knight, Spidey 2 and other recent Marvel movies.

Problem is that there is no market for mature superhero flicks in India. You HAVE to appeal to the kiddie audience or else its a failure from the get go.

Disagree, Krrish was shit. Rakesh Roshan needs to do another movie like Karan Arjun/Koyla story wise.

Yeah I definitely agree with you, Guzaarish was pretty bad and his other films are inconsistent. But still as I said before there are certain elements from his films which I quite like, mainly how the world he creates feel so surreal, don't know if its intentional. However even that is starting to feel very manufactured lately. Guzaarish was especially really hard to finish after having seen The Diving Bell & the Butterfly which is so much better at capturing what it is like to live that life.

There should be Pakistani Music Appreciation |OT| or South Asian Music Appreciation thread |OT| aside from all the Bollywood stuff. >_> So much great indie stuff that gets unnoticed.

Wow. That was also my fav Miraz Galib poetry, but perfect by singh. I have his 5CD collection and he usually make some funny stuff before he began his Ghazals.

I saw him in NJ. And I remember he talked about someone making fun of his sweetheart being black and he response how when you read a quran, which has white pages, but your eye is on the black letters. Obviously, I killed the meaning in translation, but that was so damn awesome.
