24/Oct/2011 ‘Batman: Arkham City’ explodes to the top of the All Formats Chart this week as the 4th biggest launch of the year so far (behind FIFA 12, Gears of War 3 & L.A Noire). It is by far the biggest ever launch for Warner Bros, selling almost double the launch week sales of the Eidos/Square Enix published predecessor ‘Batman: Arkham Asylum’. It is also a great week for UK developers with ‘Batman: Arkham City’ developed by North London outfit ‘Rocksteady Studios’ and the next highest new entry ‘Football Manager 2012’ by Sports Interactive who are also based in London, only a few miles away. ‘Football Manager 2012’ published by Sega, debuts at No3 only 1,800 sales behind ‘FIFA 12’ which holds on to No2 despite a 35% drop in sales. This means that last week’s No1 ‘Forza Motorsport 4’ (-52%) has to settle for No4, ahead of ‘Just Dance 3’ (-12%) which slips 2 places to No5. There is only one other new entry to break into the Top 10 this week: EA’s ‘The Sims 3: Pets’, new at No6. ‘Pro Evolution Soccer 2012’ (-52%) falls two places, down to No7, ensuring that 3 football games feature in the Top 10 this week. ‘Rage’ (-63%) suffers this week’s biggest drop in sales for a Top 10 title, slipping from No4 to No8, while 505 Games’ ‘Zumba Fitness’ (-1%) shows good resilience, only slipping one place to No9 with sales holding steady. Previous No1 ‘Gears of War 3’ (-34%) rounds things off at No10, making Microsoft the only company to have at least two games in the Top 10 this week. There are two more Top 40 newcomers this week: ‘Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One’ at No24 and ‘Dance Central 2’ at No40.

Very bad Dance Central 2 performance. I thought that was one of the most popular Kinect games. If Kinect Sports 2 performs the same, Kinect will be done for.

Well, to be fair, Just Dance 3 is doing pretty well but yeah. I bet the Kinect hardware sales are nowhere even close to MS' shipments (would explain the heavy pricedrops that it got at retail a few months back)

Ratchet never debuts very high in UK, it's a series with legs. Resistance as a franchise is done though, not showing the legs that were promised in Europe. Won't be in a single European PS3 Top10 this week.

I'm suprised Ratchet charted at all... so to hit the Top 20 can't be too bad, seeing as there was zero marketing, not great reviews and it wasn't as eagerly awaited as the past games. I think it's done ok there.

Wii Music is getting bundled in with the console now at certain stores, hence the re-entry, so not suprising. People aren't buying this because they want it ;)

Ubisoft seem to have a massive hold on the dance games market, where everything else seems to bomb. DanceStar Party did horrendous considering it's a budget title and it's being really well advertised.

I'm sure, while not a great start for Dance Central 2, it'll rise up the charts in the coming weeks for Xmas. Though with Just Dance 3 now competing, who knows.

Did you just move over to PAL after the September NPDs were released, and assumed they were "simultaneous" in some crazy fashion? Because then you've missed the first 4 or 5 weeks of Resistance 3 charting pretty respectably in the UK.

Going by the way Microsoft have been completely silent about sales since March it seems like Kinect has hit a bit of a slump. This holiday season will be very important for it.

Wii Sports Resort, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Wii Fit Plus and the Just Dance sequels did not bomb. But I do think that the Kinect was a one hit wonder that exploded out of the gate and fizzled out very quickly (the definition of a fad I guess)

Wii lived for a normal console lifespan and died when it became saturated and software support dried up. The 360 and PS3 are an abnormality in that respect because they're living longer than most other consoles (thanks to them continuing to get the lion's share of software and marketing support and their high prices, which have yet to truly hit mass market levels)
