Akira Yamaoka and Jeff Danna scoring the new Silent Hill film #1

Wasn't terribly sure where to post this, but it was just confirmed by the director on his blog. Figured there are more Yamaoka fans on the gaming side.

Quote:
You’ve waited a long time for this announcement, so I figured it was about time I told you all that Jeff Danna along with Akira Yamaoka will be composing the score for Silent Hill 2. Still a few details to be ironed out but I’m confident that nothing stands in the way. I’m really pleased it’s the same team as the first movie as I thought that was a damn fine score. Obviously Akira is one of the greatest game sound designers and composers and he’s a fundamental part of what made Silent Hill the greatest series of survival horror games ever created. Jeff is a hugely gifted composer who has immersed himself in the Silent Hill universe so knows how to bring it all together for cinematic purposes. Together they’re going to blow us all away. Quite how they’re going to work is yet to be decided but I’m raring to get into this part of the process to start hearing what they come up with.

Hopefully, Yamaoka is actually scoring as opposed to the "guy picks a bunch of tracks from the games that were never meant for that kind of sequencing" approach of the first film.

I remain skeptical about the movie, I liked the first one, it's just that the qualities that make SH good are qualities that studios don't give a fuck about and qualities that general horror movie audiences don't care for (they like to "jump")

But at least we know the original score is going to rock.

Good. I felt that Gans just kind of handpicked stuff for the first one.

That's pretty much what happened. I hope Akira actually writes the music for this one and makes it original.

The original music done in the first film was very good, and appropriate.

The music from the first film wasn't what was wrong with it. Glad this'll have good music again, but it doesn't allay any of my worries.

It probably won't be handled differently than in the first movie. Danna implementing existing music to fit the film. The text talks about Yamaoka composing, but I'll only believe it if I hear it.

I'm excited to see how it turns out. A trailer is being cut right now so we'll see soon enough if it has any promise.

I know that the set designs have been amazing.

I'm fairly certain it will be original music seeing as how this director has consistently said he prefers this film to be its own 'thing.' Borrowing music from the games is lazy as hell and the use of it in the original film was generally horrible.

Was thinking about the same: is Yamaoka doing some new scores for the movie, or is this just about using existing SH music. If it's the former, then that's a great news; if the later then meh, because all great tracks were already used in the first movie.

However, I think the way music from SH games was used in the first movie was good. I can't think of a single track that was misplaced.

The first film is still the best game-based movie out there. Also got to love the research towards the abandoned US mining towns like Centralia. Fires forever burning...

Eh, the trailers for the original didn't give away the craptastic third act of the film. I'm sure it'll be visually gorgeous (like the first) and atmospheric (like the first) and have wonderful creature effects and music (like the first). It's the writing that really concerns me :/

Oh yeah. I definitely had some problems with the first movie but all things considered I was genuinely surprised by how much of it I really liked.

I just say that because I literally have no idea what to expect here. We've seen some photos and sets and actors on sets but I feel like I don't really know what to expect from the film yet.

I honestly agree, I just didn't feel the music and the game gelled together all that well. Maybe it was those fucking goat or crying baby sound effects drowning it out all the time, I dunno. Just an opinion. I'll probably check out the soundtrack to Shadows of the Damned and be amazed at how good it is... by itself.

Hm, is that lady from the first game in this at all? Or Sean Beans character?

I quite liked the Silent Hill movie, even though I'm not a real player of the games, since they terrify me. The film was really good, and really messed up too.

The main characters from the first movie return in the sequel, portrayed by the same actors:

-Rose Da Silva, (the female lead of the first movie) returns and has a few scenes
-Dahlia (the white haired/crazy) also returns and has a small role
-Sean Bean's character (Christopher Da Silva) is slightly changed (because of the events of the first movie) and is actually Harry Mason (the first game's main character)
-Carrie-Ann Moss plays Claudia Wolf (from the games)
-Malcolm McDowell plays Leonard Wolf

From the first movie:

As a Silent Hill(and Gans) apologist, it bears repeating that the third act was ENTIRELY due to studio involvement. They thought the film needed to be spelled out for stupid audiences.

Gans was against it.

I'd kill for a director's cut of that film.

And seeing as how they're adapting my favorite SH, I have high hopes. I thought SH1 would lead into SH2(husband looking for wife!), but this works too.

I'd rather this was Gans with a new writer instead of the other way around, but ah well.

The story in the movie is a mess if you compare it to simple, but effective plot from the game. And even if you ignore the game's plot and just look at the movie on its own basis, the villain in the movie sucks. Bunch of witch hunters that act like a middle ages mob? C'mon! And their only reason to burn Alessa was that her father was unknown (so basically Dalhia had illegitimate child, she sinned). And how did they explain Alessa's ability to drown the entire town into her nightmare? A Satan helped her. Yeah...

What I especially dislike about the movie, though, is how awful job it did at integrating monsters into the universe. In games (SH1 and 2 especially) every monster has a reason behind its design and its existence; not here. Every monster, bar Pyramidhead, appears only once in the movie and thus feels rather as an obstacle on Rose's journey instead of inhabitant of Alessa's little nightmare. They haven't even thought out monster's design or purpose. Just take a look at nurses - the monster nurses have Brookhaven attire (because bobblehead nurses from SH2 are the most popular ones) while Lisa wears Alchemilla Hospital's suite (because that's what Lisa in SH1 wears); that way they destroyed the impression that monster nurses were humans working in the hospital once. The same with kids - why aren't there any in the school, where they actually belong? And what was Pyramidhead's purpose? On one hand it follows and attacks Rose and Cybil (why?), then it suddenly kills Anna (but ignore Dalhia, Cybil and Rose that were also there) and then, in the originally planned ending, an army of Pyramidheads are following Alessa's commands. There's no real logic behind any of this. It's just: hey, we have this cool looking monster so let him do cool stuff.

I like the movie, mind you, but Silent Hill games deserves something much better :(.

Gans is a visual director, and not very good with writing. It shows both in Silent Hill and Brotherhood of the Wolf.

The guy is amazing at set design and visuals, but please, someone get him a good screenwriter.

Visuals were spot on (bar that nurse thing I've mentioned), that I can agree with.

I'm repeating myself here but that would be a terribad idea. The whole point of SH2 story was that James killed Mary and the whole journey was there to make him realize it and atone for it. If the movie's plot was about Chris going to Silent Hill in order to look for Rose, the entire theme of crime and punishment, a major theme for the game, would disappear. It would be even worst crime against the series than the witch hunter plot in SH1 was. It's like screening Dostoevsky's novel and omit the part where Raskolnikov kills the pawnbroker :/.

It's not just the exposition stuff that bothered me about the third act. The simple introduction of the cult all living in the church was awful and completely destroyed the feeling of isolation that Silent Hill should be all about.

While the first film didn't really work, they did TRY. They tried very hard, and they made a visually faithful film and were clearly fans, they just couldn't get the story to work.

One of the better video game adaptations, in that it actually has some merit.
