Agreed, the Player 1 podcast crew's taste in games seem to align with mine as well. I got into Ratchet and Clank because of them and those games are pretty darn good. I especially like Phil, he's so whimsical!

Edit: Though I usually disagree with mik ;p

Jeremy Parish defends the Roguelike genre, so I like him by default.

But I don't pay much attention to game sites or reviews anymore. And I don't miss them.

No. Takes balls of steel to give a game 7.5 knowing the type of response it will cause. If anything it needs to show people to stop taking reviews so seriously.

What is sad is this seemingly growing notion that lower score always equals honesty.

I like Greg Kasavin of the old Gamespot. But once he stopped reviewing I never particularly care about anyone in any site anymore.

The fallout was entertaining, but that level of writing doesn't rise above the fetid, talentless miasma that largely defines the US games press.

Mark from Classic Game Room (YouTube). I like his positive approach (many joke that he likes every game he plays). With so many reviewers it feels like they look for faults. He points out faults when they are obvious, but doesn't hunt for them.

I also love his humor, and his focus on so many old games fits more with the games I like to play (I do like new games, he reviews those too). One more thing that just happens to sync up with me, he is not really into the online multiplayer stuff and is all about the singleplayer experience. Sooooo refreshing.

Misters Jeremy Parish and Jonathan Holmes shall suffice quite nicely. I was quite fond of the traditional IGN gang who seemed like they earnestly cared about video games (Casamassina, Bozon and Harris). I find my tastes are very aligned with RMC from that Nintendo site people go to.

Not all doom and gloom!~

Balls to reviews. These days forums, "quick looks" and playthrough footage from YouTube give me more of an idea whether or not I will enjoy a game than any review can. But for the sake of answering the question: Stuart Campbell. Not that he really reviews anything any more.

I agree. I meant the review reading public when I said "we". I think Gigglepoo gave an honest review, and ideally, would deserve neither praise nor scorn for that since he is doing his job.

Yes, because we all have totally different tastes.

Multiplayer games were an exception until we entered adulthood, wherein people convince me to buy games but never have time to play them, so I've stopped taking those seriously. If someone suggests something, I'll watch some gameplay or something rather than taking their word for it.

Well, people may find him a bit controversial and bombastic but I really am rather fond of Jim Sterling. I find we have similar tastes and, if you can get past all the noise you've heard about him I find his writing is often very thoughtful and entertaining.

I'm rather new to Destructoid but I haven't really found an instance yet where I felt his opinion was unjustified or meant to incite drama. He seems to back himself up quite well.

I'm also a fan of Johnathon Holmes from Destructoid. His reviews are well-thought out and he doesn't seem as hopelessly cynical as so many of his contemporaries. His tastes run a bit different than many reviewers and I think he brings a pretty unique perspective.

I tell ya' guys, if you can find it in your hearts to not be offended particularly easily (and you don't require much "game" talk in your gaming podcasts), there is really some magic happening since they brought "Podtoid" back.

I must say, though, I feel I can't be alone in that I don't really care much about the individual reviewer, but more the associated site. I'm not quite sure why, but when I think about wanting to read a review I think "Well, I wonder what soandso.com thought of this game".

To that end, I really enjoy Eurogamer's reviews for their depth, and I think Nintendo World Report does a damn fine job for being a single-console site.

Matt Cassamasina and Bozon (along with another I can't remember) were great reviewers and also had great coverage on IGN. Once they left, I've basically stopped visiting IGN altogether.

Their reviews were well written and scored fairly.

I don't really care what he looks like but the combination of graphic tee, blazer, and a fucking top hat make him look supremely punchable. To be fair, Yahtzee's love of cheap fedoras makes me feel the same way.

Currently, I like Joystiq's reviews (I make a point to read Justin McElroy's.), I like GiantBomb, I love Ben Luchera's on Ars Technica. EuroGamer and Wired are pretty good, too.

I swear at least half of Yahtzee's complaints about most games stem from the fact he's not very good at them. I still enjoy watching them but both his ability and tastes are far short of your average 'core' gamer. I can't use him as an opinion to inform my own at all.
