I haven't watched Angel yet, but I feel like I should. Part of it is because I know if I start watching it, that's a week+ of my life I won't do anything else.

Fuck all of them! There's only two people awesome enough to be slayers damn it!
Also Season 4 is so damn bad. Riley as a love interest is boring and rubbish, especially coming after Angel. Then the big bad is some Frankenstein's monster thingy, horrible stuff. You can tell Joss Whedon's writing suffered in season 4 because he had to handle two shows at once. |

Yeah, i've heard that they continued the show in comics. I just really don't pay attention to them.

I thought season 4 was ok.
It was interesting to find out that the government was studying vampires and demons and had that huge underground base. And then the humor that came with them inplanting that chip in Spikes brain so the only way he could satisfy his violent nature was to kill other vampires and demons thus becoming an ally lol |

Buffy is probably the better show over Angel overall, given that it just sort of sags instead of hitting the sordid lows Angel does early on, but Angel season 5 is one of the most gleeful, amazing, well-written, retarded (in a good way) things ever. One of the best seasons of television, period. It comes off like the best year-long run on a genre comic book ever put together. Just fun, emotional, awesome. If you don't "click" with Angel, just hit Wikipedia for the bits you'll need to watch this one season.

It was a really weird season. As a whole, it was pretty crap ... but a number of eps if taken in a vacuum were quite excellent. Beyond Hush, Who Are You? and Restless come to mind.

Hey now, season 4 as a whole is sorta terrible, but there are gems in there, Something Blue, Hush, the Faith 2 parter, hell I even like the opener, plus Restless, some great stuff when taken individually.

goes back to what I said on the first page, even when buffy has dips in season quality, it's still pretty damn good.

The first season in general completely betrays the expectations of what the series becomes. Start with the middle of season two and you'll see what I mean.

No kidding. That one that showed Angel way back in ye olde China or somewhere from two different perspectives blew me away. The way they used the exact same scene and it having two completely different meanings. So awesome.

Except for 4 episodes. Season 4's "Beer Bad" and the god awful (season 6 spoiler) magic addiction storyline. But then I couldn't stand seasons 6 or 7, such a shift away from I'd been enjoying. And I only watched the show 2 years ago in a big run on DVD. |

So I've started my re-watch of the series last night. I have the DVDs for Buffy and Angel is on Amazon Prime's video service so I'll be watching both. I made it through the first four episodes and those actually hold up pretty decently. Yeah, they are dated but not as bad as you'd think for something from 1996.

I really think that the switch from the WB to UPN was one of the driving forces behind the creative decline. At that point, the WB had a much more knowledgable set of executives and had crafted a niche that worked. Even when the numbers weren't there for their attempt to expand out of the younger demographics (Pepper Daniels, Jack & Bobby), the shows were creatively vibrant. It was only towards the end of its life on UPN (ironically, when Dawn Ostroff took over), did it ever feel like UPN could guide a series outside of African-American targeted sitcoms. |

It also gets a lot of hate for being "dark" but like everything in the series I thought it was handled very well. Plus, Once More With Feeling.

The movie is sooooo good.
Oh. You mean the TV show? Yeah, that's a good one too. I only watched the first few seasons before it seemed like shit got weird (Willow being a crazy witch, etc.) The opening guitar riff is still one of the best show opening themes ever. |

Yeah, Angel's opening is pretty lame in comparison.

All of Joss' shows have openings that perfectly fit the themes of their respective series. Something I've always admired, especially when we're moving towards a world where most openings on broadcast TV will be nothing more than a flash of the title.

I prefer Buffy significantly over Angel. Angel's S4 made Buffy's S4 feel like eating a half-gallon of awesome Vienna Mocha ice cream. Even if Angel had been fantastic throughout, which it wasn't, S4 would have sunk it into playing second fiddle to its parent show. It was that bad.
Season rankings wise: 5>3>2>7>6>1>4 Buffy S4 hits the low point due almost entirely because of Riley Finn, the most worthless and uninteresting person imaginable for a show so rife with great characters. Even Hush, the Faith double-dip, and Restless couldn't make up for his sheer suck. S6 gets points for having one of the best episodes ever, Once More With Feeling, and therefore edges out S1. I agree with an earlier poster that the Top 3 are pretty much a given, with their placement varying depending on the individual person. As for the best episodes ever: The Body (S5), Once With More Feeling(S6), and The Gift (S5). At any rate, anyone making their way through the series is in for a treat - just fast-forward through S4 for the most part and try to ignore it ever happened. |

I'll give it a shot in a few weeks :)
I'll start by polling people on what sort of timeline makes sense (# of eps a week) ... and once we're rolling, keep the OP updated at the top with times/dates, etc.
For Beer Bad I guess I do vaguely recall it feeling a little preachy, but in general what stands out is how goofy the episode was in general. Joss certainly never had a problem with being goofy (it's arguably one of the strengths of his writing), but it almost seemed a bit much. I suppose there's nothing wrong with doing it every once in a while though. Either way, it had some eminently quotable material. I remember quite regularly hearing 'BEER ... GOOD' in a caveman voice at parties back in the day :D As far as the other eps in question, I'm generally don't agree. For me a 'very special episode' has some key traits. It's forced via some combination of the tenor being out of character for the show, the characters being out of character, things being overly explained ... and many times, it's a very topical subject matter. With that happened to Willow, I don't really see it following any of that. If anything, in many ways it defined her character. For all the good things about her, a continual issue was her addiction to power. It's not like the issue just went away after the eps in question, it was a continual struggle for her character. And what made it interesting is they didn't just show the bad side of things ... the also showed the aftermath. It wasn't just her turning dark ... she later struggled with the fear of using powerful magic, and that set up some important conflicts. Was the analogy to drugs pretty obvious? Sure. Were the eps in question handled as deftly as they could have been? Probably not, but overall things played out pretty realistically, continued to be an important aspect of her character, and impacted situations later on. |
