I always got that feeling from Traverse town, in Kingdom Hearts. More recently though Skyloft in LOZ: Skyward Sword.

There's no need to return to them, but often times people do. It's like a great con that Bethesda has pulled on players. You receive no benefit for wasting your time in a town, going to endless identical stores selling nothing of value, talking to people who have nothing to say, memorizing the geography when you have a map and compass...

... and yet people do it. Almost everyone who plays Morrowind returns to Balmora. Sometimes on their way from place to place, but often just because one of the main attractions of a Bethesda game is to "live", meaninglessly, in a world.

Hell, after a few hours of play you probably have more money and loot than you know what to do with, but almost everyone still keeps a bedroom or a closet or a chest full of junk weapons, equipment, and items that they've picked up. It feels good to have in-game things, even things you don't use, even things you didn't particularly want.

Besaid Island & Kilika Island from FFX.

Going through those happy, peaceful, tropical areas early in the game is always my favorite sequence of the story. And I love going back to them as soon as I obtain the airship.

I felt very at home in Greenvale cruising around and checking out all my regular spots, but when I got up in the morning I couldn't wait to get out of the room. Also I played most of the game buzzing with flies because I'm a dirtbag.

Yeah, Traverse Town was great for this feeling, especially the music.

Square used to be amazing at making you feel at home in their games...

Morrowind was a little different from me. The estate you get after you complete one of faction questlines was great. Architecturally really built out, and it was removed from the regular towns. Felt like my own little patch of Vvardenfell. I remember buying a slave and bringing her all the way back there.

I felt nothing in Oblivion. Useless, ugly towns filled with useless shops that accept useless money.

Your base in JSRF

It felt like a secret place in a city you called your own and watching it become more populated with your crew was great.

It also hits close to home. I was heavily into skating at the time and me and my 'crew' had our own little base we used to chill out and do tricks. I love this series.

I feel this way about my lair in Terraria. It's always nice to come home and craft after a long trip underground or being mauled by some monsters. It's an important part of the game since it's typically where you craft, NPC's stay there and it's where you respawn after a death.

Plus, you build it from scratch so there is a sense of ownership over it.

here is my lair from one of my older worlds:

I don't think it's been mentioned, and it certainly isn't as resonant as many of the game 'homes' that have been in the thread, but NWN2 has a nice sort of interlude where you can build up your keep stronghold, repair its walls and buildings and even set taxes for your peasants and merchants.

The only place in Oblivion that tickled my fancy was the Cloud Temple or whatever the monastery was called. I didn't return all that often because fast travel basically meant you never settled down, but I did like the design. I "lived" semi-outdoor stables on your left as you walked up to the monastery. Definitely had less attachment than I did in Morrowind.

The Border House (this is, your dorm) in The Longest Journey. The best part is that (spoilers from Dreamfall) when you visit it again as Zoe in Dreamfall, I still felt it as home despite the shithole it turned into as it still had its charm somehow.

Ha, thats a good point. There was something refreshing about getting back to the hotel after the chaos outdoors. But you're right, there was something about Greenvale that brought about the feelings of home.

This and the early Suikoden games. I never played Suikoden III.

The thing I really loved about Radiata Stories was that the people went on doing their own thing. You had to track them down and do things for them in order to recruit them.

Also Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana as well. I haven't played any Gust games since then but I loved the main town setting in that game.

My awesome suite in a huge hotel in middle of the wasteland is way more awesome than Megaton. Or it would be if Megaton wasn't a nuclear hole.

HAHAHA

I love arriving home in games, love this thread. Having a house to come back is always special to me. I'm enjoying it a lot in Skyrim, especially as I'm not using quicktravel. I have a house in Whiterun, but I can't wait to have one in Markath, that place is awesome.

Minecraft is awesome too for this.

It took me a while to find a place in Oblivion to settle. I'm talking dozens of hours into the game. It wasn't until Bruma (that snowy place) that finally made a decision and I never returned back. To Oblivion, I mean. I never finished the game as intended; buying a house was my personal ending.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas were certainly better. New Vegas on hardcore mode, while I was never short of food or water, I still kept my in-game fridge stocked to be safe.

It's just that for some reason I was never able to get back into the game, despite almost tearing every single time I hear the Prontera or the Izlude theme songs. Good times that won't come back, those were.

Love this topic!

Indeed, there's no place like home.

FF8's Balamb Garden, Assassin Creed 2's Monteriggioni (though Florence still felt like home long after Ezio had moved to his mansion), the house that Vashyron, Leanne, and that other kid live in in Resonance of Fate; Valkyria Chronicles 3 and the Nameless' mobile base camp. All so relaxing to come back to. Games aren't just combat -- it's the peaceful moments that change game worlds into really great memories for us players. Tolkien got it right when he made sure that the peaceful Shire had a big role in his epic -- it wouldn't be the same without Hobbiton!

Playing FF12, I remember thinking that there should have been apartments/rooms for people like Vaan and Penelo that you could go back and hang out in. Migelo's shop just doesn't get the job done; neither does the clan HQ.

FF8 is probably my favorite, perhaps because I myself had just finished college when I first played the game.

Zak McKracken, don't forget to close the fridge on your way out:

Maniac Mansion, not your own home, but the tension of invading the home of a homocidal family is awesome:

Bully, can't find a good picture, but the room where you sleep, invent stuff etc:

Heavy Rain, it has a lot of homes, all very detailed and with a lot of atmosphere, this one is my favorite:

EDIT: Sam and Max, their home/office was cool and filled with memorabilia:

Moga Village from MH3. The music at night is the stuff of legends for me. It's a great feeling to return to this place after a really intense quest, and sit for hours organizing your loot and equipment.

Other mentions include Mother 3 and Earthbound.

I just loved the different towns in IX, balamb garden in VIII, the slums in VII and Rabanastre in XII.
