Woah surprised I didn't see this topic before. Love the idea of home bases and will have to play through some of the games mentioned here that I haven't played with home mechanics. If there's one thing I love in games its having bases/homes, espcially ones that u can customize and that can change, upgrade etc based on what you do in the story. It's one of the reasons I enjoyed Fable 3 since you had a sancutary and I wanted to collect everything and show off all the cool things I've done.

Okami: Kamiki Village
![]() Whenever you return to the village it just feels like coming home. And then you return there in the past and it feels like some strangely familiar but different home. Bastion: The Bastion ![]() Awesome to have a base to return to, especially when it becomes clear that it's a major plot point. It really did feel like an invasion when the Uhra showed up in your home. Even your pets got in on the fight. Ocarina of Time: Kokiri Village It's already been said better than I could have hoped to. But yeah this place. Seems like the places that feel the most like home are the ones that change as the game progresses. It's not just a static location you keep coming back to, but a place that changes in your absence-- a lot like home in real life. |

Most recently, Darkness 2 did this exceptionally well with Jackie's mansion:
![]() ![]() ![]() Mansion walkthrough: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_ybda-LiK0 So huge, you can meet and talk RPG-style with all the mafia dudes (Fat Tony, Johnny Powell, Dolfo, Vinnie, Enzo who if you talk to long enough turns out to be gay which is awesome, Aunt Sarah, etc). They've all got hilarious stuff to say. You can do some little shooting mini-games with Dolfo. Most importantly, your mansion gets ambushed later on, so it's a great change of pace from coming back to the mansion after each mission to having to defend it and knowing every nook and cranny has been invaded. Very awesome moment, brought the emotion out. |

As far as I know, homes or bases in games tend to come in three flavours. A home you already have, one you have to build or a ravaged one that you have to rebuild. I picked my favourite in each of the three varieties.
![]() Home: Legend of Mana Another home with soothing music. As far as I know, the game doesn't really force you to head back there, but I still did it anyway. You had a potted cactus in your flower that would listen to what adventures you last did and as soon as you leave the room, it writes about it in its diary in secret. It sounds dopey and lame, and maybe it is, but I loved it. Another cool thing was that your home had a forge to craft weapons, a ranch to raise monsters and a library that logged pretty much everything. Especially the latter was something I really appreciated. Seemed like an elegant way to store that kind of information in your game. ![]() Building: Little King's Story I had great fondness of Alpoco. You build it up, populate the place and slowly expand it bit by bit. It has upbeat, relaxing music and people greet you when you strut through and collect taxes. The game makes you go back home constantly, but I never minded it one bit. ![]() Rebuilding: Rocket Slime Boingburg is the typical 'rebuild' scenario. Your town gets crushed by the Plob and its citizens get captured. You restore bits and pieces each time you hit a certain amount of freed citizens. By doing so you gain access to mini-games, items, new party members and a battle arena. My favourite part was kidnapping monsters myself and making them live in my town. Abduct enough of them and they'll offer to serve in your giant tank. Good stuff. |
