Race Your PC Thread2 of Voiding Warranties

The previous host, ColonialRaptor, was unable to continually update. I offered to take over the thread.

At first glance, this thread looks like a simple way to brag about the capabilities of ones computer. There's no question about that aspect. However, as an adjunct to the "I Need a New PC!" thread, it serves three other major purposes.

1. Tweaking every last bit of your computer to eek out that score is pretty much the same as playing any sort of game with a leaderboard. Though certain hardware capabilities give an advantage, there is a wide range of scores even between similar hardware. That's where the tweaking comes in. This can also show people that they might be able to get a lot more out of their hardware.

2. For people who just spent hours researching, buying, and building their rigs, it provides a place to see the improvements over their previous equipment in comparison to the community.

3. It allows the folks who contribute to the PC thread a good set of statistics to use, so we can better serve the community in guiding their purchases and offering advice.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Download 3DMark11 from here - Download.

2. Install 3DMark11.

3. Open the program and click the "Basic" tab. For the settings, leave it as is. Performance should already be selected for the Preset, which runs the benchmark at 720p. Now click "Run 3DMark 11".

4. Record your results in the following format:

Score - # and type of cards - Core/Mem/Voltage of cards - CPU @ Frequency - Ram @ Frequency - Motherboard - Forum Name - Heatsink/Type(air/closed water/custom loop/phase/LN2) - Link to your score.

Please make this concise as possible for easy posting. For example:

P9048 - HD7970 - 1125/1575/stock - 2500K @ 5.0GHz - RAM @ 1600MHz - ASUS Gene-Z - mkenyon - Custom loop - link

Leave out descriptors like 1x in the GPU description, "Intel Core i5", and RAM type. This will help keep everything succinct, and makes my job easier.

When you finish running the test, the program will give you a link to the 3DMark website. This page is where you will want to link to your score. I will use this to verify authenticity. Without it, your score will not be posted.

Notes: If your heatsink isn't listed in your score, please let me know. Showing what each type of cooler is capable of is a metric I am interested in. There was a lot of formatting to be done, and it's quite the beast to proof read. Let me know if you see any errors. Also a special thanks to ColonialRaptor for the thread in the first place, as well as the great graphics.

X58/Nehalem Overclocking Guide
P55/Lynnfield Overclocking Guide
Phenom II Overclocking Guide
Bulldozer Overclocking Guide #1, and #2.

Because of the nature of GPUs, it's hard to aggregate good overclocking guides. There can't be one guide for all 5xx NVIDIA cards, as they all have different characteristics. Even looking at something as specific as a GTX 560Ti, some manufacturers bin the cards, and there's a wide range of non-reference coolers that have an effect on the card's limits. A good way to get started in the right direction is to search for "(card name) review". Websites such as Guru3D, OC3D, HardOCP, and Overclockers Club will have a lengthy report on the overclocking abilities of the cards they review.

Licorice-flavoured booze?
Thanks for taking over the thread, was temped to do it myself but have been quite busy recently, anyway as you say first and foremost it's a great way to brag about how awesome your PC is but more than that for some people including myself it's a great incentive to tweak your PC and get the best performance out of it.

I had recently upgraded my PC just before ColonialRaptor posted the original thread and was apprehensive about pushing my system but the thread soon had me booting into the bios and leaning about the settings and overvolting my GPU for the first time, tonight I'll see if I can improve upon my score further.

First run with no tweaking. Is it worth separating out latop scores from desktop scores? Largely so my score doesn't look so bad in comparison... :)

P4060 - 2x ATI Radeon 5870M - 800MHz/1100MHz @ 1.1v - i7-620M @ 3368MHz - 6GB Kingston @ 1600MHz - Intel Ibex Peak-M PM55 - Freylis - Stock (Air) - Link

Note: The drivers are showing as 'not approved' because I'm using the CAPs from 11.11c with the 11.10 drivers. For some reason the 11.11 series is causing BSODs with Alienware laptops, hence the slight driving hacking.

This is the fun stuff here, and a perfect example of the game that can be had. Two systems that are nearly identical in capabilities/parts, yet a 21% difference in score.

This thread encouraged me to OC my CPU, and I burned up my power supply. :/
Sorry man. Maybe I should put a disclaimer up there. If it makes you feel any better, it also made me push my CPU to its limits. I did a suicide run @ 1.52V. Was fairly certain I fried my proc, spent about 3 hours fixing everything.

Yay, top score!

;)

Edit: Also just noticed I'd written my RAM speed down - it's 1333MHz not 1600MHz. Time for an upgrade in the new year methinks!

Could always try clocking it at 1600MHz in BIOS to see where that gets you. Either way, it's not a significant upgrade. You'd notice a difference in benches and video editing/rendering/artsy stuff. Not really in games.

Thanks so much for this kenyon, I really REALLY appreciate you keeping the spirit of my thread alive. And the way you did it - well, it's a great idea to have the Top25 in the first post and then the others after that.

There are a bunch of new entries in the other thread that I didn't include in the list yet - did you put them into this list yet? If you did... then you are such a champ.

I'm going to have to take that first place Trifire Crown...

Indeed. I must say that this setup I currently have has been a lot of fun to tweak and play with. While my "24/7" setup is a bit more modest, with my CPU clocked at 4.4Ghz because it turns a bit hot above that, the RAM and GPU is clocked at pretty much the same at all times.

Looking at the leaderboard, and seeing my setup competing with GTX570s is fun. All that remains now is to wonder if I could actually break 6k. It'll be touch, but it's worth a go!

Edit: Thanks for getting this thread up and going again mkenyon, I hope more people play along and we get some nice friendly yet good competition going.

I grabbed everyone after your last post saying you updated. Think it was only the last 3 pages or so.

I definitely understand the work you put into this thing. It's been about 7 hours so far of organizing and formatting.

Heh... yeah, and wait until you go to bed one night and there are 50 new entries and you have to figure out an efficient way to put them all in and then change the number at the front of them.

I suggest, putting all of the new entries in, and then adding the numbers / changing the numbers in front to chronological order after the fact.

It's the checking part that is hard, so many numbers, so much text all in a block, it's harder than it seems right? My eyes were going to fuzz by the end of some of it.

Big ups for taking it on man, BIG UPS, this forum needs something like this.

I'll have something for you soon ;)

Slight bump from a tweaked overclock. Newer drivers too if that makes a difference.

Good luck keeping up with the results, mkenyon. You may want to set up a google docs spreadsheet (ideally with more than one person with editing rights) to make it easier to keep it updated.

I put one together back when there were only 99 entries. If you want it to use as a template or something, let me know.

I'll do it once an evening (barring other responsibilities). I'd like to do it myself so I can keep the formatting just right. Part of that formatting is being able to keep everything on a single line once I edit it. I'm a boss with a 10 key, so it's really pretty easy.

However, I might as well at least try out the google doc to see if it makes it easier. Go ahead and send me a PM with the info. Thanks!

Just a note, in CPU-Z and realtemp, my proc was barely averaging 1.8GHz due to speedstep, so I don't know how much of a problem that is in terms of my score.

3dMark site also mentions my GPU core clock to be only at 500MHz lol. I'll run the test again next time when I leave the proc at 4.9 and MSI afterburner so the GPU clock stays at 880MHz or so.

This is with CCC running, not Afterburner; meanwhile ATI TT (or a combination of some sort) for some reason locks up my PC

edit - nm about the core clock at 500MHz, looked at other users with the 6950 and they've got it too
