Quote:
Speaking via his Twitter account, Clarkson revealed that, “There’s a rumour in internet land that there will be no more Top Gear this year. I’m afraid that apart from an Xmas Special, it’s true.”

The forthright lead presenter of the BBC's popular motoring show said: “[We] would love to be back in the autumn but Sunday nights will be full of fat people singing” – a reference to Simon Cowell’s X Factor show.

The BBC and ITV are constantly locked in scheduling battles, with the latest being the rivalry between The Voice and Britain's Got Talent, which both launched on the same Saturday night with a 20-minute crossover.

Clarkson added: “Top Gear is a medium-sized van. Cowell is a juggernaut. When he has finished his singing competition, our new series will start.”

Clarkson has a history of making outspoken remarks. Earlier this week he risked opprobrium when he claimed that the long delays at Heathrow border control were because immigration officials were no longer allowed to use their discretion to wave certain passengers through. In the past, he's also insulted lorry drivers, Mexicans and striking public sector workers.
LOL its not even because of budget or something its because of x-factor..............................

Clarkson's a dick and all but I'm kinda happy for the delay, apart from the car segments, the series has been lackluster.

Last series was quite good in that respect.

Shame. I think it's been improving recently. I hope the special is at least better than the last two.

I am ok with this.

Maybe do a 9 episode series and cut the fat that would have existed with two 6-7 episode series.

There is one who could unite the Top Gear US hosts.

(I have no idea who I'm talking about)

No, but we'll probably know within a week or so as they usually run into fans and things leak out.

My guess is they have to take "people carriers" and convert them to extreme overlanders.

I am really bummed out we have to wait so long for a new Top Gear. I don't care about the X-Factor, nor should the BBC really? I mean Top Gear is one of their biggest shows iirc last article I read, and it's followed literally around the world...

But Feb for a Christmas special at that? :(

the BBC specifically shouldn't care about audience figures - its charter is about public service. And I'd be surprised if there was much overlap in the audience with the X-factor?

It also kind of conflicts with the 'not giving a crap' attitude of Top Gear. But I understand it probably wasn't their call. It just sucks we have to wait so long.

Being off the air may well do the show some good, anyway - it might reduce the media pressure somewhat for a while, as Top Gear is always under so much scrutiny, but the media tend to forget anything that isn't on the immediate horizon as far as TV is concerned.

The BBC absolutely should (and do) care about audience figures. A public service achieves more service if it's used by more people.

In the sense of making sure they are catering to needs that may not be targetted by commercial networkds you are right. If you are saying they should only have popular shows you are not.

Never having really watched the show before I have basically done nothing but watch it for a week now, plowing from series 17 to series 9 on Netflix. Maybe as it got more popular, they started doing more crazy stuff or more stuff with expensive cars. The episodes I like best are ones where they buy cheap cars/mid-range cars and do road trips. Super car stuff is cool but I'll never own one so it's kinda bland after a while.

Good NEWS!

A new Top gear DVD coming in: THE WORST CAR IN THE WORLD.

Highlight reel in this link

I'm pumped, It's just James May and Clarkson. It's gonna be awesome.
Releasing on November 19th.

Pump it in my veins. Thats the sort of stuff I love on top gear: Old crummy cars ruined by those guys. But there seems to be more stuff in line with newer cars.
