Everything was so obviously scripted in that India special - it was pretty bad.

Watching BBCA's marathon today of old seasons.

Jupiter has to be the most used song in the show.

Half of what made it a good episode, was clarkson's absolute hatred of that scooter.

Just watched the special where they go to the North Pole...easily my least favorite they've done. I think I've gotten what I want out of them now, the car talk bores me to tears but I love the trips.

Weakest special by far. Far too predictable and not enough spontaneity. Vietnam still by far the best.

Would have been better if they bought cars in India (obv with less than 7000 pounds), no fun if shits not breaking.

I thought the North Pole special was actually pretty amazing.

T'was the first Top Gear broadcast in HD too if I remember correctly.

Also, Andy Wilman responds to criticism.

Quote:
Thank you for all of your constructive criticism we know a fair few of you aren’t happy with it so I would just like to say a few things.

Our budget is really limited at the moment so we had to find a cheap and convenient place to go which wouldn’t upset too many people so naturally, we chose India.

The boys were told very strictly before we arrived that due to recent incidents in the media they would have to stick to a safe script which is what we did we had to show the script before we were allowed in to India to avoid any incidents.

We went on the train because we were told it would be safer for the boys (and indeed the crew before we went)

We don’t have unlimited ideas we like to reuse things that have worked in the past but this obviously didn’t not work out as planned.

The garden scene was scripted completely as the people attending where very important to India and we did not want to offend anybody.

For “obvious” acting the boys are not actors sometimes we set things up in the course of entertaining the audience although we obviously don’t know how the public will react until we show it.

Watching the India special myself again I have to admit I am overall disappointed in it only the editors get to view this because we like to keep it a surprise and I already know Jeremy thoughts on this overall it was a pretty shoddy attempt but we tried our best and some of things we did were cut out of the already 90 minute show.

Thank you for your thoughts and criticism.

Well if they recognise it's shit at least there's hope of them changing things and getting to be a decent show again.

Sounds like they were stupidly restricted.

With that said, not knowing how the public will react to scripting sounds like bollocks to me. It's been the biggest complaint of the show for years from most people.

Wasn't a bad special but I found myself to be not to interested during the first half. Second half was pretty good though...looking forward to the regular season starting.

A limited budget wouldn't have been the problem in itself. The combination of this with a tight script was.

Good to see I wasn't alone in finding the special wanting. The garden party was flat, the entire "excuse" to go to India was flimsy at best, the train signs were alright, and I typically usually don't like the body modifications in the first place, but christ was it pointless this time.

Though I did like the using the exhaust as can launchers.

I want to point out again how terrible the garden party set was.

Nothing holds a candle to the Bolivia special. Got me fully hooked on the show.

India was overly scripted, boring, and had little to do with cars, much less the cars they brought and modified.

Still looking forward to the new series though. I have a Top Gear shaped hole in my universe right now, and Forza 4 only goes so far ;P

The Polar Special had a lot of heart to it. Who the hell takes a pickup truck to the pole? You have to give Hammond credit for braving through the whole thing with team dog.

Vietnam special is my personal favorite even though it's not about cars. It seemed like they really had a lot of fun doing that special, except for Clarkson for the first half of it. He came around and learned to love his piece of shit Vespa.

That and Vietnam is as good as television gets. My favorite show has been on a gradual slide for a while and I don't really understand why they can't turn it around.

There are some magazines/shows online that have more entertaining and better car reviews than Top Gear at the moment, that used to never be the case! Meanwhile Jeremy is walking around with no pants on...

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Series 10 was the peak. Sure there were great specials after it, but that was 10 episodes long and they were all pretty fucking amazing.

The episode where they enter their second hand 3-series diesel in a 24 hour race, so great.

My only big problem with the Polar Special episode was they never clarified that they went to the magnetic North pole, and not the physical North Pole.
