Last year was the year video games found out about SDCC, much like five years ago it was Hollywood.

This year is going to be even bigger because it's a second boom year.

I could have gotten a pro pass for the past 10 years but never bothered with either Comic-Con or Wondercon up north. I should probably stop being lazy and try to go one year.

To be fair, some game companies have had a Comic-Con presence for the longest time. I'm just glad I never had to actually work a demo when I was still working with games. Likewise with E3.

My panel was just announced. Hope to see you there! Saturday, 10am, Room 6A.

Quote:
10:00-11:00 After Earth— Enter the world of After Earth with an in-depth panel that gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the universe of the upcoming film and comic book. With the film now in post-production and set to hit theaters next June, screenwriter Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) and director of photography Peter Suschitzky (The Empire Strikes Back) will discuss the making of the film. They will be joined by comic book artist Beni Lobel (Spanish horror comic anthology Cthulu; G.I. Joe comic books; Torchwood: Web of Lies motion comic), and writers Robert Greenberger (Iron Man, Batman, and Hellboy novels) and Michael Friedman (Star Trek and X-Men novels) -- the creators of the comic book After Earth: Innocence, which will introduce Kitai and Cypher Raige (played by Jaden and Will Smith in the After Earth film). Also joining the panel is Eisner Award winner Peter David (Star Trek novels and comic books; The Incredible Hulk), who is writing the After Earth prequel novel and also created the After Earth bible with Greenberger and Friedman.

In After Earth, one thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity's escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind's new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (played by Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai's craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.

I'm really glad to see video games showing up there and if this Epic reveal has a good reception, I would like to see more game studios see comic con as a great opportunity to showcase their games to us.

I'm always really surprised board games don't have a bigger presence at the con, though.

The only one belonging to CCI is San Diego. It's a name recognition thing. The Dallass CC is not related to SDCC at all.

So it's anyone's guess really. It's not going to be the same as San Diego.

No offense to you, but people hate when people ask last minute if tickets are still available. There's a website, plus it's a rather big deal con. It's not like there's a lack of information about this.

I think it was kinda bullshit that the only way to get tickets was to already have a ticket. Before twilight landed at the con, this was a non issue because they never sold out. Now if you don't have a ticket already, you have no hope of ever going. This new id system is a step in right direction, but why did they close registration on a system that has infinite numbers? They really make it a pain in the ass for new people to enjoy it.

Better the way it is now than making it a pain in the ass for everyone.

When the expansion happens, then more new people can get in.

Or better yet, stop allowing panels like Glee or Psych to be shown so that there are fewer people going just to see their favorite non-Comic Con related hollywood idols.
People complain about Twilight, but at least that's something that fits in at Comic Con, unlike Bones or Castle.

I don't agree. As it is now, your basically having the same people go every year that wait in line for hours the first day so they can go again next year. Then when they randomly sell the small amount of online tickets, you have about 10 secs to buy before that amount is gone. I say make everyone buy online and give a equal chance for all.

As for expansion, I live in San Diego. They only expansion plan I heard was adding a stadium on for the chargers and that's not moving too fast last time I heard. I dunno how they can make it bigger anyway. It sits on the bay, and has two Hilton's next to it and Petco park across the street. No where for it to go really.

What? I already have my ticket, I am just asking if they are going to sell ON SITE for next year still since I've heard that they were going to stop this year. I know they usually do it but I just want to double check.

Did you not try to register two years ago with that complete clusterfuck of an online process? They tried three times to make it work. I actually got in the FIRST time complete with Preview Night but they invalidated it when i was about to pay. Four (three?) months later i only managed to get THURSDAY and SUNDAY passes. First time in 20 years when i haven't had a Full Membership. Last year i waited in line for 3 hours and didn't get half way before it was closed. My brother then went for me the next day at 4:30am and we couldn't even get Preview Night.
It's a fucking nightmare to deal with these processes and actually creates a panic. People have been buying extra passes just in case they MIGHT invite a friend or three, which creates a very shitty scalpers market.
Giving preference to people who are already members is basically the same as it's always been. We've been able to register for the next year for a long while and now we don't have to suffer through mile long lines or fear not going because of servers being inundated.

"Equal chance" doesn't exist, since people with the fastest computers and connections, and get friends to help them out is an unfair anyway. =P

Comic Con is just too popular now for it to go any other way. Stop allowing non-Comic Con topics at SDCC would actually help more.

They also want to build a hotel directly in the convention center.
This new expansion was basically announced the day SDCC organization renewed their contract with the convention center.

Plus, this is sort of our E3 for our blog, so I feel obligated to go.

It will take 2.5 years, and construction has already begun. For instance, they took two years to build the bridge across the highway that goes to the con side. It's a nice looking bridge, too.

I'm assuming SDCC 2012 will see some construction work on the sides and the foundation of the hotel, and by 2013, we'll see the new hotel itself (man, if it's a Marriott, that will mean Marriott has a monopoly on the official con hotels, plus there are already 56778 Marriotts around the general area) as well as Harbor Blvd. being all torn to shit.

Marriott is the one on both sides right? I worked the anime film festival that was next to the give away room there
