There's a great little board game shop in Redmond (Town Center) in Washington that had tables where you could just pull out games and try them out before buying them. Also sold and hosted events for Magic the Gathering and other stuff. Unfortunately moved before I could really get involved with anything there. The staff was great though.
I do wish I had a good group of people to play some of these newer or European style board games with. I played Dominion a couple times with a small group awhile back and it was pretty damn fun. I enjoy dissecting complex systems. |

I have a friend who's always buying and wanting to play new board games; he's fallen down the rabbit hole which can be every bit as addictive and expensive a hobby as video games. Whereas I'm happy playing my favorites over and over (like Last Night on Earth). Anyway I skipped the board game talk in this episode, I didn't find it all that entertaining.

Same reason online multiplayer mostly killed split-screen multiplayer. :P |

I love board games and enjoyed the talk.
I think it should continue. Those who don't like it can skip it. I have no interest in the Fez talk. Or any talk about the latest shooter or whatever. So I skip it or tune out. I can understand that people don't want board game talk on a video game podcast. But those people are all terrible and evil. If it continues, maybe it can be at the end of the podcast, like the sports junk that used to happen. I don't like sports (except hockey eh) and it was always easy to just stop listening at the outro.

I hope Garnett held strong this weekend and wasn't seduced by Jeff's candyland coated lies and shiny fiddly bits :P
Side note: I saw on twitter that Jeff will be on Gamers With Jobs (which comes out Wednesday) woot! Can't wait to hear what game he hypes up and then next week hear the GWJ crew come back with "what was Jeff thinking..." Its a tradition at this point |

I can't see anything topping Rage in terms of the gap between Jeff's enthusiasm and the abject apathy of the GWJ crew.

In other podcast threads, you often see people saying how the best parts of the episode are the non-video-game related discussions. But they talk about board games for a bit here and people are all like "I LISTEN TO VIDEO GAME PODCASTS FOR VIDEO GAME TALK". Different audiences I guess? I don't know. |

I listen to some board game podcasts actually. And a lot of it is about the experience. Like, you can totally just talk about a certain session that was interesting. I imagine if board game talk became a thing on this podcast, it would eventually get to that. You spend a bit of time on the mechanics so people have a general idea, and then you talk about a session. The same thing happens with video games. You give a quick overview of what the game actually is, and then you talk about your experience playing it. It's not about "Y-button does _____". It's more like "this is an [genre] where [unique identifier]". "Thunderstone is a deckbuilder with light dungeon crawl mechanics." is akin to "Xenoblade is an RPG with MMO style quests and combat." Over time, you stop having to explain what a "deckbuilder" is or what "tile placement" is. But I don't know. I guess it really depends on your interests. I find it more interesting than a tangent about Power Rangers vs Beetle Borgs or whatever (not a dig on P1P as a whole - I love it). GWJ has board game talk occasionally. They do a quick overview of what the game is, and then talk about sessions. That is the perfect example. |

If Garnett gets into it, I think it would be great to have a segment at the end, after the outro like they did with the American football talk. And I also have no idea what Beetle Borgs are. That was the first time I even heard of it. I barely even know what the Power Rangers are. |

So, I just listened to this week's GWJ and the board game talk was all mechanics. It's probably just not my thing, which is ok.

I was more referring to the GWJ "Rabbitcon" episodes where it's mostly board game talk and very little video games. When it's just the usual group and they're telling stories about a specific board game/PnP RPG session, it's great. I'm not "hardcore" enough to know a specific episode number to point you to though. But yeah. If you're just not interested in board games, then I doubt session-stories would do much for you anyway. You kind of need the context and an idea of how the game works to really connect with the discussion (just like with video games). Which is why I think it would be great if it became a regular thing on Weekend Confirmed, it would be at the end after the outro.

But don't derail him! Make him talk more about them without treating it like a TRS review or treating the audience like they don't know anything about board games! In fact, derail everything else with board games! I would buy totally buy a Ratchet and Clank board game. |

Then follow it up with Fireball Island
If he had any enjoyment in his youth he'll nostalgia all over the podcast ![]() I'd like to see a European board game beat that!

edit:
I've honestly been waiting for John Davison to hire Garnett to come over to CBS Interactive in some capacity. |
